FRIGHT 001EP
|
On their debut for Fright, the newly-appointed home for serial killer synth symphonies, Chicago's Gatekeeper create sinister synth cathedral epics that conjure the kind of crimson-splattered disco that terrified '80s babies. "Forgotten" and "Obsidian" are hi-NRG Hades anthems where raven-haired beauties wave around razor-sharp silver fans. "Visions" is a re-imagining of Giorgio Moroder emerging from memetic polyalloy mists ready to slay aliens and ENCOM warlocks with his arsenal of Moog machinery. The title-track contains the finest final chase sequence orchestrations outside of a Kurt Russell movie. Limited to 300 hand-numbered copies on granite-colored vinyl.

IME 012EP
|
"Immerse cuts a unique groove these days, releasing original, leftfield music, often dark and uplifting simultaneously. This new Gatekeeper plate falls on the darker side of the fence, but that's no bad thing. 'Hades' is a moody skulker -- triangles, pads and trickling sound FX giving way to a thumping bass'n'drum workout, dotted with delayed beeps and cutup shouted warnings. Flipside, the Keeper's original Skull Disco collab 'Tomb' gets a rework, the insistent midrange line slotted into a rock-hard selection of militant breaks, subterranean bass and dystopian mechanical noise."

"Alicia Keys is the dubstep chanteuse of the moment, it seems. Skull Disco's Gatekeeper drops an underground anthem on Bristol's Punch Drunk label featuring a familiar refrain and a melody that just won't leave your consciousness. Huge stepping drums and body shot 808s. 'Tense Past' on the flipside is in more familiar Gatekeeper territory. Dark, brooding atmospherics swell over Berlin-esque chords and machine drum percussion. Support from Mary Anne Hobbs, Appleblim, Peverelist, RSD."
