Beware, cult record! Gong is a progressive space-rock band formed at the end of the '60s by Daevid Allen, in those days leader of Soft Machine. Recorded in the Pavillon de Paris in 1977, this live album is the ultimate testimony of the "historic" Gong. All the band's "classics" were played that night, during a "reunion" show that lasted several hours. Released originally by a small label in 1977, this release is almost a collector's item -- Virgin, the official record company of the band having made every effort to forbid it; in vain. You have to possess this album if you are a true Gong fan, since the "official" live recording released by Virgin was a pale copy of Gong Est Mort, Vive Gong. The songs, compared to studio versions, are transcended by the magnificent improvisation from Didier Malherbe and the astounding solos of Steve Hillage. Gong Est Mort, Vive Gong was an expensive record, and barely impossible to find. This prestigious re-edition will please all the true fans, without a doubt. Features the classic line-up of Daevid Allen, Gilly Smyth, Tim Blake, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Didier Malherbe, and Pierre Moerlen.

Mid-line reissue, originally released in 1973. "The companion piece to the 1973 album The Flying Teapot, Angels Egg is not your usual progressive rock album. Very quirky, with many, mostly brief compositions, the album is a tad less spacey than Teapot, with just a few psychedelic-inspired lyrics, and it's very technically adept. Angels Egg opens with a true space rock cut (one of the few on the album), filled with the usual Smyth space whispering and Daevid Allen voicings, then leads into the cleverly titled 'Sold to the Highest Buddha,' with Steve Hillage and Didier Malherbe as prominent figures. The instrumental 'Castle in the Clouds' finds Hillage coming into his own, with a sound identical to his solo work. 'Givin' My Love to You' sounds like a bar song, with no music and a cluster of seemingly drunken fellas trying to sing. The instrumental 'Flute Salad' gives way to 'Oily Way,' a showcase for Malherbe's jazzy flute. 'Inner Temple,' an instrumental space rock track, moves along with a jazz edge, provided by Didiers sax. The final three tracks are the real highlights on Angels Egg: 'I Never Glid Before' is a fantastic prog-rock tune, replete with blistering Hillage solo, primo Allen lyrics and vocal, and the precise percussion of new bandmember Pierre Moerlen. This eclectic composition travels through several movements and time changes, and comes across as a perpetually progressing piece. The imaginative and jazzy 'Eat That Phone Book Coda' brings the album to a close."

Mid-line digipak reissue from 2003. Originally released on BYG in 1974. "You is undoubtedly the most sophisticated and best produced Gong album, its highlights including 'Master Builder,' a gentle Buddhist chant which developed into a frantic live favorite, and the extended, synthesizer-driven 'A Sprinkling Of Clouds.' One of the wackiest and most innovative groups of the early '70s, Gong's communal lifestyle and fascination with Eastern mysticism epitomized the hippy ideal of the day. Their music blended jazz-influenced space-rock, psychedelia and bizarre experimentation with a distinct sense of humor. Recorded in late 1973, You is the final installment of the group's Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy, made up by the earlier albums Flying Teapot and Angel's Egg. It was the last Gong album made before the departures of both its founding member and driving force, Daevid Allen and its inspired guitarist Steve Hillage, who was soon to embark on his highly successful solo career. You is undoubtedly the most sophisticated and best produced Gong album, its highlights including 'Master Builder,' a gentle Buddhist chant which developed into a frantic live favorite, and the extended, synthesizer-driven 'A Sprinkling Of Clouds.'"

Part II of Radio Gnome Invisible. 2004 remaster of the 5th Gong album, originally issued 1973; with 4 bonus tracks. "Two definitive '70s progressive rock classics digitally remastered from the original masters. Each CD features previously unreleased bonus tracks and an expanded, illustrated booklet. Angel's Egg is the rock equivalent of a mad tea party, with lyrics involving Pothead Pixies, Octave Doctors and Radio Gnomes; all set to Pierre Moerlen's tight and sophisticated drumming, Didier Malherbe's multicoloured sax and flute leads, Steve Hillage's cosmic guitar soloing, and Daveid Allen's amusing vocals and glissando guitar layers."

2004 remaster, originally issued 1974; the 6th Gong album. "Atmospheric, inscrutable, and unhinged, You continues where Angel's Egg left off, blasting off into the stratospheric realms of acid-induced space rock (the entire band allegedly performed the album while under the influence!). Guitar wizard Steve Hillage takes a more prominent role on epic, jazz-oriented tunes like the ten minute plus 'Isle Of Everywhere' and the furious 'Master Builder'."

Gong's first proper studio album, if you consider Magick Brother as a Daevid Allen/Gilli Smyth album, and the great Continental Circus as merely a soundtrack. Recorded in 1971, along with the aforementioned titles this is classic first phase Gong. "In many way, Camembert epitomizes the early Gong. ie. stoned loonies having a great time, who also happened to be excellent musicians. It's full of raw energy, more tape loops, space-whisper and glissando guitar."--John Platt.
