Finis Africæ (or Finis Africae): words redolent of mystery and myth, of Europe looking out to new lands, new worlds, new times. And so it is with A Last Discovery, the work of Spaniard Juan Alberto Arteche Guel, and his musical co-adventurers, recorded between 1984 and 2001. After 15 years of musical success in Spain with his band Nuestro Pequeño Mundo, Arteche was ready to experiment with new ideas, and with the purchase of a four-track reel-to-reel recorder he did so, exploring imaginary global music-worlds with a core of like-minded explorers. The group, dubbed Finis Africæ by JAA after reading Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, where the term refers to forbidden books and hidden knowledge, released seven recordings over an 18-year period, the best of which are compiled here. Finis Africæ was part of the "new wave" of Spanish music which gradually emerged after the end of the Francoist regime. Using modern electric instruments and traditional acoustic instruments from many cultures blended together via studio alchemy, a magic which grew even stronger with the acquisition of a 16-track recorder after their second release, Finis Africæ created an outward-looking musical multiverse, an unclassifiable amalgam encompassing elements of folk traditions from all over the world, skillfully and lovingly shaped into an inclusive pan-global whole. Deeply influenced by African music, the group's reverberant, organic minimal funk will appeal to DJs as well as all who yearn for the loving warmth that comes with the embrace of global possibilities. With liner notes in Spanish, English and Japanese by JAA, A Last Discovery, is the first release by Finis Africae outside of their native Spain. Come take a retrospective journey of discovery where new worlds await.

A collection of darkly shining northern diamonds, Sous Juju is a 2CD compilation of the musical work of Kuupuu from her first releases in 2003 up to previously-unreleased material from 2012. Kuupuu, known by her parents as Jonna Karanka, is a self-taught musician and visual artist from Finland who inhabits a semi-magical world where the mundane and the mysterious meet and make wonderful music together. Using tapes and loops, instruments both traditional and modern, Kuupuu's blend of low-tech electro-acoustics and high-north songcraft is charming, surprising and unique. Sous Juju gathers her self-released material, plus pieces culled from vinyl, cassette, and CDR on American and European labels, as well as an unreleased piece and a 2012 vinyl remix from EM Records. This is a fine opportunity to hear the early work of an artist who promises to continue to enchant us well into the future. Housed in a cardboard gatefold paper cover, including archival pictures of her previously-issued items and liner notes written by the artist in English.

This vinyl-only release shows her continued evolution, a developing style, more electronic, but still full of her charm, whimsy and unique sense of contrast and layering. Dreamy pop tones blend with abstract sound works, menace with mesmerism, loops and beats anchor otherworldy etheric excursions, electronic sound melds with acoustic warmth and is earthed by folksy colors. Kuupuu's fans will be intrigued but not upset by these latest developments, and new listeners will be converted.

Young on EM Records, following Isophonic Boogie Woogie (EM 1045CD/HJ-LP) which was originally released in 1980 and re-issued by EM in 2005, and the 2009 Istet Serenade (EM 1087CD/LP). Mystiphonic is the fruit of two years of recordings at Young's Isophonic Sound Laboratory in Brooklyn, "comprovisations" which are more electronic than the previous EM releases, and yet this new CD retains Young's emotional life-long horn playing, a romance which began in his youth in Kansas City. Also carrying on from previous releases is the all-encompassing warmth and organic/oceanic feeling of Young's music, a rootedness that has been present since his early exposure to Charlie Parker, on through his San Francisco years and ever forward, linking past, present and future through deep American soil to his world-embracing current music, all united through his "Isophonic" philosophy. The Mystiphonic blend of electronics, percussion and horns is one of subtle beauty, sure to please Young's fans while attracting new admirers.

Restock of the last copies on vinyl. Singing in Unison is the latest in a series of recordings from acclaimed sound artist, composer, and performer Yoshi Wada. Recorded live over two nights in 1978, on March 14th and 15th at New York City's legendary performance space The Kitchen, Singing in Unison is a dramatic yet meditative work: modal improvisations for three male voices, singing, with great gravitas, in purposeful unison. These previously-unreleased recordings, featuring vocalists Richard Hayman, Imani Smith, and Wada himself are extremely powerful, with a glacial majesty and a sense of timeless wonder. Wada's earliest musical memories are of hearing Zen Buddhist ritual chants in his native Japan, and those memories are reflected in the deep vocalizations here; also evident is Wada's period of intense study with Indian master singer Pandit Pran Nath. Thus there is a definite "eastern" feeling to Singing in Unison, with further elements added by Imani Smith's Sufi background and Wada's interest in eastern European vocal styles, but the music is also informed by Wada's experiences in the Fluxus movement and as a member of the New York avant-garde community. The edgy atmosphere of 1970s New York City pervades these recordings, adding a hint of menace. Despite the fact that this is purely vocal music, fans of the slow-moving heaviosity of Sunn 0))) will appreciate Singing in Unison.

After the Watts Riots in South Los Angeles in 1965, the working-class community suffered further with no improvements to the infrastructure, a lack of opportunity, and the rise of delinquency and gang-fuelled crime. In the early '70s, a community activist, Mike Joseph, discovered a group of children in Watts playing music using junk and scrap metal as instruments. He brought them into a studio in Los Angeles and produced a record in 1971 in cooperation with the Watts Writers Workshop and other community groups. Scrap oil drums, iron bars, metal cans & other urban castoffs are played with enthusiasm, backing R&B favorites and a children's song. But it was more than a mere document of child's play -- this peerlessly unique musical expression sends a strong message.
