HC 023EP

Setenta consists of seven musicians from Paris who use their musical upbringing, taste, backgrounds and unstoppable eagerness to produce a unique mix of Latin, soul, and boogaloo with a touch of Caribbean influences. After playing live in 2011 with Orlando Julius, Setenta decided to rearrange his famous classic "Ijo Soul," taken from his Super Afro Soul album recorded in 1966 for Philips. "Guapeta" was influenced by the Nuyorican maestros from the '70s, creating a futuristic Latin soul-sound.

An insanely great and rare disco album from the famous Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist Kiki Gyan, reissued for the first time by French label Hot Casa Records. Recorded at Decca sound studio in Lagos in 1980, these two long tracks are dancefloor classics. The music here is an incredible hybrid of Afro boogie, Nigerian percussion, and catchy lyrics. Produced by Kiki Gyan, the African keyboard legend. The sound quality of this recording is amazing and can be compared with the American and Euro disco records released by major labels of the time. Officially licensed with the prestigious Afrodisia label, remastered and pressed in limited numbered copies. Includes a 7" radio edit by the Boogie Gentlemen. Prepare your disco shoes; this release is explosive!

Ivory Coast Soul is back in its second volume, and Djamel Hammadi aka Afrobrazilero and DJ Julien Lebrun have dug even deeper into the country's vinyl archives. After much painstaking research and investigative work, Hot Casa has gathered together some key members of seminal Afro and psychedelic outfits, selecting 14 Afro-soul gems, centered mainly on the musically-rich and creatively-volatile Republic of the Ivory Coast during the '70s. Despite the fact that the country has recently lived through an unfortunate civil war, with deep sociopolitical crisis and instability and strong FRCI Visa checkpoints, Hot Casa has worked even harder with the help of local friends to find the rarest and most interesting records. Last but not least, after many new trips, from the Abobo "Baghdad "area, Yopougon to Bouaké to Akoupé and Jacqueville, Hot Casa also had to find their original producers or heir-producers, to finalize the licensing process. This new volume highlights some extraordinary music and immense talent working in a variety of styles and approaches. The Ivory Coast gained its independence from France on August 7th 1960 and became a republic with a strong executive power, personified in the son of a Baoulé chief, Felix Houphouët-Boigny. It has quickly become the musical center of West Africa, attracting musicians from across the continent. The borders with Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ghana made the country, and especially Abidjan, the crossroads of millions of cultures and diasporas. This compilation represents an amazing period, when urban music transcended tribe conception, and when Pan-Africanism wasn't simply a word, but a real philosophy and musical adventure. This 2CD is presented with a full-color 24-page booklet, including historical information written by Ivorian historian Anicet Boka.

Gatefold 2LP version. Originally released in 2010. This compilation is the result of nearly three years' work by Djamel Hammadi aka Afrobrazilero, an extraordinary collector and vinyl digger who traveled all over Africa from Ghana, Benin, Togo, Mali to Senegal. After 12 beautiful but dangerous trips throughout The Ivory Coast (featuring fake policemen at border controls, political instabilities, deep economic crisis, malaria, and one big fear when he opened a vinyl box in a small abandoned bus station and found a scorpion) he selected 13 rare or unreleased tracks. All these tracks have been fully licensed with the tireless help of DJ Julien Lebrun. As Hot Casa explains: "It was almost always impossible to find the original master song, as most of the producers we met didn't have them anymore. As you can imagine, tropical climate and humidity are not friends to vinyl preservation. Still, we did our best to clean and use different copies of each song to have the clearest sound."

2009 release. "Orlando" Julius Aremu Olusanya Ekemode was born in 1943 in the Osun state of Nigeria. He first learned of his musical talent studying and playing drums and flute in school, but found his true love in the sounds of the alto saxophone. As early as 19, he was involved professionally in music as both bandleader and as a "Top Ace" with Eddy Okunta's popular band in Lagos. In 1964, he released his first massive hit single with his newly-formed Modern Aces. His 1966 effort, Super Afro Soul, made him a national celebrity in Nigeria and even went so far as to influence music in the United States. The record's dramatic, highly melodic incorporation of soul, pop, and funk was very much ahead of its time, helping to shape the funk movement in the U.S. for years to come. After Super Afro Soul, Julius released a long list of records exclusively in Nigeria and from them received a great amount of local fame. He recorded this Disco Hi-Life session in 1976 with 12 musicians.

2011 release. Growing up in a royal household in Nigeria, Joni Haastrup began his musical journey performing for his brother's band Sneakers and was quickly snapped up as a vocalist for Orlando Julius Ekemode and his Modern Aces' Super Afro Soul LP, one of Afro-beat's formative LPs. Soon after, Ginger Baker of Cream fame replaced Steve Winwood with Joni on keys for Air Force's UK concerts in '71 and the success of the collaboration led to further shows with Baker as part of the SALT project before he returned to Nigeria to set up MonoMono. Back in London in 1978, Joni recorded his solo gem Wake Up Your Mind for the Afrodesia imprint. Laced with funk basslines, swirling keyboards and screaming guitars, this is Joni's most "western" record but at the same time, unmistakably African in origin. From the slow-motion disco of "Greetings" to the stone-cold groove of "Watch Out" to the Reuben Wilson-style funk of "Free My People" Joni was soaking up the sounds of the times and blending them with the music of his roots. Hot Casa Records is proud to reissue this Nigerian Afro-funk gem on gatefold vinyl, remastered.
