Although the productions of Bill Youngman and John Tejada are more or less the opposite of Anders Ilar's, they have something in common, which is a tendency to the rather dark, dream-like and maybe even destructive side of music. John Tejada's remix of "Mystery Train" replaces Ilar's distorted beat and creates a deep track, while Bill Youngman transforms the patterns into raw mechanical grooves. There's also a halfbeat track from Ilar, an original taken from his album Elva (STRIKE 139CD). Fast dubstep, fast electronica. On white vinyl.

In 2003, Swedish producer Anders Ilar released his ambient club debut Everdom on Shitkatapult and in 2007, his dream-like album Ludwijka -- both following their own theme, atmosphere, mood. Same goes for Elva, his 11th album, containing 11 tracks, that lasts 1 hour 11 minutes and 11 seconds. He started production for the album on 11/11/11. Ilar has various talents -- he is a piano player, a huge a fan of drum computers and a technical nerd, able to drill himself towards the core. Elva moves between dark, romantic harmonies and clear sounds. Experimental grooves and romantic chords are extremes that are not opposed in Ilar's cosmos but create one big picture. Crystal-clear cymbal sounds ride on straight forward bass lines and distorted bass sounds combine with old school synth chords, sounding almost '80s. No matter if it is club hymns or complicated 6/8 waltz romances from the north or experimental tracks, this is a very adventurous album -- from the island perspective.

Cristian Vogel's fourteenth album is already a classic. Every track is subtly shaped and full of nuances, without drifting into gimmickry. Every sound is efficient and precise. With The Inertials, Vogel nonchalantly provides the soundtrack for an industrial wasteland. This is club music beyond any genre which, while bearing the spirit of industrial techno, is way above the rave-dogma which dominated industrial techno during the '90s. The dark side of high-end production, as you may call it. In the late '80s in the UK, Cristian Vogel with the Cabbage Head Collective, became engaged in the production of electronic music. He completed his studies of 20th century music at the University of Sussex. In the mid-'90s he began to deliver blueprints for minimal and wonky techno. His first album, Beginning To Understand, was released on Mille Plateaux in 1994, and the following 12 albums were released on labels such as Tresor and Novamute. In collaboration with Jamie Lidell, he founded Super_Collider years before Lidell gained recognition as a solo artist. At the same time, he provided work as a composer of contemporary dance and film music. Vogel did remixes for the likes of Radiohead, Maxïmo Park, Chicks On Speed and Thom Yorke. As a programmer and theorist in the field of digital sound research, he is just as much at home as he is as a composer and songwriter. With a great sense of distinct melody and harmony, Vogel as a producer roughs up the digital surfaces. This is how he adds depth and body to his music, which is something a lot of techno-related productions are lacking. Digital clarity has patina and at the same time sounds hazy. At a predominantly moderate tempo, Vogel cleverly combines creaky sounds with swinging rhythms. With a knowledge of dubstep, but unimpressed by the short-lived micro-trends of club music, he has assembled the newest standards of digital production on The Inertials. The lively "Seed Dogs" with its unexpected tempo changes; the surprising "Lucky Connor" with its marvellously complex rhythm; the hypnotic, incredibly groovy "Snakes In The Grass," appearing like a confident nod towards minimal techno; the mysterious "Deepwater," creating suspense from the very first moment, like a John Carpenter soundtrack. The list could be continued indefinitely. Every track is timeless and rests within itself. "Today's Standard Form" is a synthesizer arpeggio fantasy with no beats at all, a prelude for the midi piano, if you like. And with "Dreams Of Apolonia," dub for the first time is not just insinuated, but actually emerging in its own right.

Shrubbn!! have been around for a cool 15 years -- and that's exactly how long everyone has been waiting for their debut album. After all, buddies Ulli Bormans (aka Schieres) and Marco Haas (aka T.Raumschmiere) preferred to sling out the odd Shrubbn!! track on different, almost forgotten labels whenever they felt like getting it together. Now, the duo surprise and delight us with a veritable gem of a record. Their long distance debut Echos follows an upbeat scientific credo of art for text. Pushing the computer aside, Ulli and Marco crafted 14 pulsating, deep and dubby tracks caught up between ambient and beats -- a thick, full sound, a call of the deep with plenty of passion for reverb and bass. Numbering the tracks (instead of real titles) simply made sense as they follow the logic of a meandering session or, rather, a true exploration, executed with plenty of exactitude. And this time around, it's all in the details, starting with the release format: for Echos, Shrubbn!! say no to the prevalent CD format in favor of a truly stunning vinyl edition -- a pleasure for both ears and eyes. Together with Berlin video experts Transforma, the duo also came up with a clever live concept that translates Shrubbn!!'s music to imagery (for a quick glimpse of this aesthetic tour de force, take a peek at Transforma's crisp cover art). And the latter have been busy carving their own niche in the world of art -- slow and steady, yet entirely uncompromising -- with works ranging from Apparat's stunning club set to their own music film Synken and countless concepts or performances for landmark festivals like Club Transmediale. Backed by this inspired gang, Shrubbn!! now give us an overall oeuvre of darkest imagery and heavy sounds bathed in ominous crashing waves.

In many ways, O, released on Thrill Jockey after a nine-year break, was a second debut album for Markus Popp aka Oval. A radical break with old concepts and methods, a new beginning. While Popp's artistic approach in the 1990s and early 2000s was more of a structural, theoretical nature, O was just about the music itself. Themes such as the means of production, limitations, dogma and concept took a back seat to a musical sensibility. Instead of writing new software to synthesize and process sounds, for O, Popp dove into the heart of our preset-culture. He acquired a standard PC and only used the pre-installed sounds and plug-ins. With this ready-to-play machine and conventional musical instruments like the guitar and drums, a new chapter in the story of Oval was written. DNA is a mountain of an album: an audio CD with 25 tracks, each about three minutes long. Some are no longer than a minute. Here you'll find a collection of rare Oval pieces and 12 previously-unreleased tracks. DNA is a mixture of music from Markus Popp's various creative phases. It's surprising how old and new meld seamlessly together, and how, for Oval, formalism and musicality have produced similar results. Markus Popp has found an unmistakable musical language and declined it from A to Z. DNA, so to say, is the accompanying dictionary. Originally, this album was supposed to appear before O and conclude the "electronic" phase of Oval. DNA is intoxicating and wonderful. There is the intensive guitar work of the new pieces, an eruptive bundle of sounds, the sparkle and shimmer of high tones. The simultaneousness of countless events, unbelievably dense and at the same time secretly light. Disc 2 of DNA is almost something like an Open Source Manifesto: It contains the SoundBrowser/Sequenzer-Software OvalDNA and more than 2,000 Oval Sounds from various phases of Popp's work as individual AIFF files. The software and sound files are intended for music producers and are available to all without restrictions. Also included is a video documentation of PlayGroundTV/Madrid, the Glass UFO music video by AmberleyProductions/Berlin and 10 bonus tracks for the OvalDNA album as WAV files.

This is the third album from band/collective Warren Suicide, formed by Cherie and Nackt from Berlin. And this album is phantasmagorical, literally -- a declaration of peace, a gentle giant. Because after Hello/Warren Suicide and Requiem For A Missing Link, World Warren III abandons the disruption of genres and binary code, in favor of a third principle: Warren Peace. Duality does not mean conflict, but serves as a source for a new feeling: being able to pick one of the energies permanently alternating between "war and peace." Such is the sound of their music, confidently turning away from the past. WWIII is instead a story of science fiction and lust, an analog vision full of optimism. Songs like "In Love With The Enemy," "Animal Party" or "Moving Close" (with T.Raumschmiere as guest vocalist) whoosh, chirp and rumble with their very own, unheard-of groove. The spirit of a sound is conjured, as plug-in-ready as a book, as a Technicolor film, like a cinematic journey, captivating as anything. This music has carte blanche and chooses freedom: in love and in anarchy. Wanting more -- that's the principle Warren Suicide have been building on right from the start. With World Warren III, the two have carried their "cosmos" ideology to the extremes. Thus reads the list of the Warren cosmonauts: Earl Harvin (Air, Tindersticks), Andrew Unruh (Einstürzende Neubauten) and Ben Lauber (Transporterraum) as drummer, the Berlin/Göteborg String Theory orchestra, Warren tour companions Arne Augustin (Nena), Giovanni Nicoletta (Apparat) on keyboards, T.Raumschmiere as musician/vocalist and many more -- over 50 people. This splendid plethora has been co-organized by Moses Schneider (Tocotronic, Beatsteaks, Dendemann), who also co-produced the album.
