Ranil is undoubtedly the most unconventional figure among the greats of Amazonian cumbia, earning a well-deserved place alongside all the better-known iconic bands. He worked as a teacher, criollo guitarist, radio host, TV entrepreneur, and politician, but gained lasting fame as the founder of Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical in the 1970s. By 1968, around the same time Los Destellos were making waves in Lima, groups like Los Wembler's de Iquitos and Juaneco y su Combo began electrifying cumbia in Iquitos. This new genre, dubbed Amazonian cumbia, exploded nationwide in 1973, thanks to hits by Juaneco y su Combo, Los Mirlos, and Los Wembler's. The success these bands achieved spawned dozens of other groups from the Amazon. Ranil, always a visionary, recognized the movement's potential and joined forces through his first single recorded on the Dinsa label in 1974. Unhappy with the contractual terms, he went on to found Producciones Llerena, the label on which he would release the rest of his discography. Over the years, Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical featured guitarists like Límber Zumba and Luis Nigro, while Ranil remained the lead vocalist and bassist for group. Zumba and Nigro had already played with other regional bands and written songs for groups like Los Destellos and Los Mirlos. This compilation offers a glimpse into the vast musical output Ranil created in the late 1970s and early 1980s, bringing together 14 tracks from the band's ten LPs. These records have always been hard to come by as, despite being recorded in Lima, they were distributed by Ranil from Iquitos. Psychedelia, rock fusion, cumbia, salsa, mambo, Amazonian folk -- you'll find all these flavors blended into the vibrant, jungle-rich sound Ranil crafted.

The Alien Dub Orchestra is ragtag collective of Bavarian musicians, featuring members of The Notwist and G.Rag y los hermanos Patchekos. The cohort formed around the idea of performing the standards of the fabled Breadminster Songbook, aka the back-catalogue of lone dubman Elijah Minnelli. Minnelli is known for constructing wheezy, forlorn odes to his hometown, both as highly sought-after self-released 7" singles, and a critically-acclaimed debut album, Perpetual Musket for FatCat Records, lauded by the likes of The Guardian, The Wire, and The Quietus. Plays the Breadminster Songbook finds group covering Minnelli's cumbia-infused dub reggae with full band, playing an eclectic array of instruments including: guiro, accordion, melodica, sousaphone, trumpet and assorted percussion. The seeds of the Alien Dub Orchestra were sown during a support gig for The Notwist, where assorted musicians joined Minnelli for an encore, reinterpreting one of his dub remixes across woodwind, brass and assorted percussion. Despite the non-traditional origins of the source material, the inherent musicality of Minnelli's songwriting shines through across his releases, and this creative kinship is what attracted the Orchestra to reimagining his work. The first live collaboration led to recording sessions and further gigs, with the Orchestra building a full set of Minnelli's music. The resulting album puts forward the strongest case yet of the shared musical throughline between the acts, where cumbia, dub and folk sensibilities coalesce to something altogether unique. The tracks are wrought new, with melodies fleshed out and broader instrumentation expanding the sonic possibilities of the compositions. For these dubs, Minnelli is joined by Raimund Wong, who had caught his ear with his ambitious live sets, a daisy chain of tape machines and FX pedals. Again, despite their differing creative processes, the two bonded over a shared love of dub music.

Wewantsounds reissues Fairuz's classic album Chat Iskandaria released on Relax-in in 1987. The album sees "The Lebanese Diva" going back to her roots and interpreting classic songs by the Rahbani Brothers in her own style accompanied by hypnotic traditional orchestral arrangements. Coming with its original deluxe gatefold sleeve, the album -- curated by Mario Choueiry from Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris), who also wrote the liner notes -- has been newly remastered by Colorsound Studio in Paris. Fairuz is a living legend and one of the greatest divas of the Arab world. For more than sixty years, she has been at the heart of Arabic music, releasing landmark albums since the early '50s and performing on stages around the globe. Fairuz rose to prominence through her collaboration with the Rahbani Brothers (Assi and Mansour), a creative partnership that began in the 1950s and flourished through the 1970s, producing a vast repertoire of timeless songs that remain beloved across the Arab world and beyond. In the late 1970s, Fairuz shifted to a more modern sound with albums such as Wahdon (1979) and Maarifti Feek (1986), produced by her son Ziad Rahbani, blending jazz, funk, and other contemporary influences into her music. However, Chat Iskandaria, released in 1987, marks a return to her classic Rahbani sound, offering a more traditional yet captivating approach to Arabic music. The album sees Fairuz interpreting a selection of Rahbani Brothers compositions in their signature theatrical and orchestral style, with themes ranging from nostalgia and love -- including a heartfelt homage to the city of Alexandria -- to the passage of time, central motifs in much of their work the legendary poet Saïd Akl contributes to two songs, "Min Rawabina Al Kamar" and "Fattehhon Alay." Unlike her more experimental collaborations with Ziad Rahbani, Chat Iskandaria stays firmly rooted in traditional Lebanese and Levantine musical aesthetics. Rich in melody and poetic imagery, it showcases Fairuz at her most evocative, supported by the refined orchestral arrangements that defined her golden era with the Rahbanis. Chat Iskandaria is a must-have for lovers of classical Arabic music and a poignant reminder of the enduring artistic bond between Fairuz and the Rahbani Brothers. Wewantsounds releases the album on vinyl for the first time since its original 1987 release, featuring its beautiful gatefold sleeve, remastered audio and a new bilingual introduction by Mario Choueiry (Institut du Monde Arabe).

A longtime favorite among Brazilian music collectors! Trio Ternura's "A Gira," originally released in 1973, blends mid-tempo grooves with percussive funk and soul in a way that feels effortlessly timeless. Vampisoul now make this incredible single available once again, cut at 45 RPM and remastered from the original tapes. The track was written by the group's father and uncle as a heartfelt homage to the Candomblé deity -- celebrating nature and spirituality. Trio Ternura was a true family project, made up of three siblings with deep musical roots. According to them "A Gira" captures "the dancing, the expression, the lyrics and musical relaxation -- something very Brazilian." The B-side features the trio's soulful interpretation of Gato Barbieri's "Last Tango in Paris," adding a mellow cinematic touch to this sought-after release.

Definitely ahead of its time, Black Jade approach was very sophisticated, creating more than a serious cult in downtown London. While their debut Contempo (SOR 004LP) was a "religious" dub affair, their sophomore album showcased a more rootsy direction. Published as a mere private press in the second half of the seventies, the album is finally available in a long overdue re-issue.

RELEASE DATE: 7/25/2025
Flamenco is a Spanish art, which has always been prone to hybridization with a multitude of musical languages. Therefore, the universe of "flamenco fusion" could well reflect the way in which Spaniards have related throughout history with other cultures. And that relationship may have often been one of dialogue, exchange, respect and crossbreeding. Among the circumstances that could have favored the traditional mestizaje of flamenco art is the open character of the south of the Iberian Peninsula, to all the civilizations that have settled in its territories; the encounter with America in 1492, and the brotherhood with the Spanish-speaking countries; that the Casa de contratación de Indias, the entity that regulated the transit between Spain and America for centuries, was founded in none other than Seville! (and olé); without forgetting the fundamental African contribution, brought to America by millions of black slaves throughout the 400 years of the slave trade. Pícaro Vol. 4 is an excellent example of how some Spanish flamenco musicians knew how to take advantage of the fashion of other styles and rhythms coming from outside Spain, creating a new sound universe and incorporating them into their repertoire. Undoubtedly, there is a generational replacement of "flamenco Ye-Ye" in Spain with artists like Rosalía or C. Tangana, although now it will be necessary to modernize "the label". This compilation offers listeners a snapshot of the multiple styles of flamenco hybridization that triumphed in the world during the decades of the '50s and '60s of the 20th century. Through its microsurcos comes immeasurable flamenco ye yé (track 1), flamenco rock and roll (tracks 3 and 4), flamenco cha cha chá (tracks 6, 7 and 15) or flamenco mambo (track 12), together with other unusual, exotic and impossible mixes of Spanish song with tango arrabalero, bluegrass, easy listening, swing, groove or soul. Always a happy mix, brought together with exquisite taste in this vinyl for your enjoyment. Featuring Juana Chicharro, Encarnita, Amina Y Su Cuadro Flamenco, Dolores Abril Y Juanito Valderrama, El Titi, María Bonita Y José De Moreno, Los Alcarson, Paquito Jerez, Rosita, Rafael Martínez Y Su Orquesta, Emilio Varela, Felipe Campuzano, Los Españoles, Tito Moya Y Su Orquesta, Los Plata, and Rosa Morena.

Splatter color vinyl version. Jonathan Richman's classic "Egyptian Reggae" has been responsible for setting thousands of discerning dance floors on fire. After getting the obvious Jah twist on a few occasions, so Vampisoul thought it was about time for the Richman's song to receive a fun yet respectful cumbia treatment! This cumbia candy has been recorded in Lima by no other than Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Compay Quinto, and one of the greatest cumbia guitar players in Peru. On the flip side is one of Acosta´s own original songs, "Carnaval de Jujuy," recorded by Austin-based future-cumbia group Money Chicha. The band presents a fascinating exploration of the nexus of Peru's legendary fuzzed out early chicha sound and the band's unique application of chicha-influenced sounds to this terrific cumbia.

Cheo y Los Consentidos de la Casa is a dynamic, funk-infused Latin music project led by Cheo Pardo (of Los Amigos Invisibles). Serving as the house band for a bi-weekly dance night at NYC's Nublu, the group blends salsa, boogaloo, cha-cha-cha, and bolero with psychedelic effects and deep grooves. Their debut live album captures this high-energy fusion, reimagining Latin classics with a modern, electrifying twist that honors tradition while pushing boundaries. This isn't your abuela's salsa night -- this is Cheo Y Los Consentidos De La Casa. Funk-forward. Rhythm-obsessed. 100% dance floor approved. Born from a love of vintage Latin soul and the raw energy of NYC's dance floors, Cheo assembled an all-star crew of the city's hottest Latin players all filtered through wah-wah pedals, space echoes, fuzzy guitar solos, and a deep, unshakable groove. The result? A psychedelic, percussive party that's equal parts tradition and funked-out future. Recorded live at Nublu this album captures the heat, sweat, and sabor of their wildest nights -- reimagining classics from Joe Cuba, Willie Colón, Eddie Palmieri, Mon Rivera, and more. Each track is a tribute and a reinvention, breathing new life into the old- school with a cosmic twist, and opening the doors for a whole new generation to feel that sabrosura in their bones. Featuring Felipe Fournier, Chico Raro, and José Benjamín.

RELEASE DATE: 7/18/2025
Here it is, for the first time on a 45, "Drug Story," the lost track by Joe Bataan. Pure Latin soul, recorded at the peak of the artist's career and released 50 years later! A must-purchase for those into Latin soul and funk. Joe Bataan's extensive discography was expanded in 2022 with the release of some old recordings from the King of Latin Soul that had never been previously published. After the success of his album Riot! (1968), Bataan had easy access to a studio whenever inspiration struck to record a new song sketch or even a complete track. Sometimes, he would finish the recording entirely and offer it in its final version to Fania for release. This usually worked, although on some occasions, the song was rejected. In the case of "Drug Story," the track was recorded without a clear final purpose, even though Bataan hoped it would become part of an album. When the Fania executives heard the result, they immediately rejected it, thinking it promoted drug use. The tapes were filed away and lost in oblivion until they ended up in a thrift store in New York. From there, they were rescued by a Latin music specialist and later sold, eventually making their way to the Vampisoul archives. The song was finally released in its entirety in 2022 on the LP Drug Story by Now Again. It features a long, slow vocal intro that evolves into a more up-tempo track with two very distinct parts, to the point that it almost feels like two different songs. It transports us to the best moment of Joe Bataan's career, with all of his classic ingredients, delivering a track as good as his most famous songs. Bataan himself takes on the lead vocals and piano, Bobby Rodríguez handles the flute, sax, and bass, Pete 'Choki' Quintero plays the drums, and William Howes Jr. plays the electric guitar with wah-wah effects.

"Celebrated session guitarist, Willie Lindo, steps from behind the scenes and into the spotlight to deliver some top-class original compositions and sublime cover versions. A sumptuous piece of gourmet music. Timeless dub, executed to perfection. The B-Side sees Lindo cover Al Green and Bobby Womack, converting their slow jams into stoney instrumental masterpieces, a sort of precursor to the hip-hop way of sampling and reinterpreting our collective heritage. Far And Distant was recorded at 220 Marcus Garvey Drive, eight years prior to Rita Marley relocating Tuff Gong International to that address. A relic from an era where being 'in the studio' actually meant something. Far And Distant is available as a limited numbered edition of 750 copies on orange colored vinyl."

This album is both a musical and political document that tells the story of one of the most brutal massacres that took place in 1976 in a Palestinian refugee camp during the Lebanese Civil War. Pianist Gaetano Liguori, along with Giulio Stocchi and Demetrio Stratos (the legendary singer of the band Area), composed this album, a gut-wrenching blend of free jazz, poetry, and Mediterranean music. The first edition was released in 1978 and, after almost 50 years, unfortunately, nothing seems to have changed. This is the third edition of the album, and as with the previous releases, all proceeds will go to charity. This time, Black Sweat have chosen to donate the funds to UNRWA.

A true embodiment of Brazilian boogie, this is the first official reissue of Brylho's album, founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1978 as Brylho da Cidade. The group was influenced by the Black Rio movement of Tim Maia, Cassiano, and others. Members included Arnaldo Brandão (vocals/bass), Paulo Roquette (guitar), Cláudio Zoli (guitar/vocals), Robério Rafael (drums), Bolão (percussion), and Ricardo Cristaldi (keyboard). Claudio Zoli stands out as an important funk artist of the 1980s, during a time when pop rock bands dominated the Brazilian music scene. This album features one of the biggest hits of 1983: the soulful reggae groove "Noite do Prazer." Often described as Rio de Janeiro's answer to George Benson's "Give Me the Night," it's a timeless classic that bridges funk, soul, and Brazilian grooves. On "Se Você For a Salvador," a sun-soaked, feel-good boogie track, younger generations have embraced a new term to describe the sound: Brazilian City Pop. The record also delivers dancefloor heat like the stomping "Jóia Rara," the vibrant soul-reggae fusion "Destrava Maria," the ahead-of-its- time rap-funk hybrid "Cheque Sem Fundo," and the electrifying samba-reggae "Pé de Guerra," rich with Bahian rhythms and energy. Closing out the album are two under-the-radar jazz-funk gems: "Meditando" and "171." Though often lumped into the boogie category, these tracks lean more toward the sleek 1980s jazz-funk sound, reminiscent of UK acts like Level 42.

RELEASE DATE: 7/18/2025
This elusive and lesser-known 1966 collector's gem by Óscar Agudello y el Combo Moderno called Pa' mi muñeca is an album devoted to recreating the strength of a musical genre that's been the soundtrack of Colombian life for decades and represents a milestone on the route cumbia had taken by 1966, when it was originally released on Discos Fuentes. It's exactly the kind of music that lights up a tambó or a fandango circle on carnival night. First time reissue. Includes liner notes by genre expert Don Alirio. 180g vinyl. It is a rarity where the artist took an unexpected musical turn and performed several porros, paseaitos, gaitas, and cumbias, evoking the swaying motion and rolling waves of Colombia's Caribbean sound. It resonates with the echoes of a romantic minstrel laced with an unexpected richness of nuance, a hallmark of the cumbia sound. A dozen tracks, none of them new, but suffused with a consciousness that can be understood within the context of their time and with the personality of the artist bold enough to bring them to life. "Madre cumbia" opens the album with a festive, nostalgic mood, infused with the simple beauty and the electrifying beat of the tropics that immediately makes you want to get up and dance. It's a fantastic example of how to perform a song with passion and make the listener fall instantly in love with an album. "Pa' mi muñeca," the title track, is a fast-paced paseaito that explores new paths that took a shortcut to the dance halls. A showstopper on the dance floor. "Está como mango" is a porro-cumbia that charms with a rich tapestry of compliments, the calling card of many old-school tropical songs. "Cumbia de recuerdo," "Cumbia suave," "Cumbia de Santa Marta," are back-to-back cumbias. This is an album devoted to recreating the strength of a musical genre that's been the soundtrack of Colombian life for decades. It's a record dedicated to capturing good times, filled with simple dreams, steeped in joyful energy, and shining with the uninhibited flair, or better said, the quality of the sixties.

His output as both a performer and producer included multiple major reggae hits. After his international break through, he produced work for keyboard maestro Harold Butler. Butler's widely sought-after Gold Connection album, an instrumental collection from 1976 features nine superior reggae and soul instrumentals, including popular versions of 'That's The Way I Like It' and the title track. RELEASE DATE: 7/11/2025
Davorio is a powerful and heartfelt album born from a musical collaboration between Italian pianist and composer Samuele Strufaldi and the villagers of Gohouo-Zagna in the Ivory Coast's Guemon region. Released on Música Macondo Records, the project blends Guéré traditional music, jazz, western classical and electronica, creating a modern musical language that tells the stories, traditions, and spirit of the village across 16 tracks. This unique project uses music as a bridge between cultures, while supporting the construction of a community space library and music studio for the children of Gohouo-Zagna. The project's journey began in August 2019, when Strufaldi was invited by local djembe player Boris Pierrou to visit Gohouo-Zagna. Immersing himself in the life of the village, Strufaldi was inspired by Pierrou's vision of creating a library space to foster learning, cultural preservation, and music-making for future generations. From this initial encounter, Davorio took shape as a collaborative cultural exchange that transcends borders, time, and genre. During his time in Gohouo-Zagna, Strufaldi, alongside Francesco Gherardi and Boris Pierrou, worked closely with Guéré musicians. The album captures the pulse of the village itself -- from recordings of children's clapping games and percussion sessions to traditional songs and ambient village sounds. Interspersed between the tracks are 40-second "audio photographs" offering glimpses of daily life, each carefully annotated in the liner notes to preserve the meaning and story behind the music. The Guéré people, part of the wider Kru ethnic group, have safeguarded their folk music and percussive traditions for centuries. On Davorio, their legacy intertwines with Strufaldi's lush electronic production, intricate jazz structures, and expressive saxophone melodies. Rhodes keys ripple against the driving beat of djembe drums, while elements of drum & bass and ambient jungle rhythms elevate the album into a truly global, yet rooted, sonic experience. "I feel that the creative process into a collective and unconscious territory belongs to everybody, where we can meet each other and find and share new treasures," Strufaldi reflects -- a sentiment that resonates deeply throughout the record. Davorio stands as a testament to the power of music to connect communities, honor traditions, and build a better future.

2LP Silk Screen Sleeve plus insert. Before Guaracha UFO propelled Meridian Brothers onto the international stage, Eblis Álvarez was already shaping his singular sonic universe in the shadows. Released only on CD in between 2009 and 2012 via local label La Distritofónica, Meridian Brothers VI and VII never had wide distribution or media exposure. Yet, these albums represent a crucial phase in the band's evolution, capturing the energy of Bogotá's experimental cumbia scene at the time. On VI, Álvarez crafts a hallucinatory patchwork of cumbia and vallenato, using his guitar as the guiding thread before layering other instruments on top. These two albums laid the foundation for the radical fusion and irreverent spirit that would later define Meridian Brothers. Now reissued on vinyl for the first time, these historic recordings offer a raw and fascinating glimpse into the origins of one of Latin America's most forward-thinking musical projects.

VII pushes experimentation even further with a custom-built sampling algorithm, generating unpredictable loops and grooves. These two albums laid the foundation for the radical fusion and irreverent spirit that would later define Meridian Brothers.
