2009 release. Boris Tchaikovsky's "Clarinet Concerto" on the present NEOS CD represents the first recording in the West of this work. Composed in the former USSR under the communist regime, it is a piece with a thoroughly Russian soul, but remains full of playful exuberance. This is a concerto far removed from Western European avant-garde tendencies, its very charm and nonchalance making for joyful music indeed. Debussy's "Rhapsodie," as orchestrated by the composer, seldom sees the light of day on concert programmes, but it has been recorded often. Matthias Muller, in his turn, has now orchestrated the "Petite Piece" by Debussy, as a parallel to the "Rhapsodie." Weber's "Clarinet Concerto" is of course a classic item of the clarinet literature. Its forthright sound, combined with the vitality of a first class orchestra from Russia (Vladimir Fedosejev is the Chief Conductor), casts this piece in youthful mode, without declining the offer of its romantic melancholy. Performed by: Matthias Muller (clarinet), Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra Moscow, Mischa Damev (conductor).
