RELTIME 009-9CD

Grief, sadness, goodbye. With Shook, Rico Friebe returns to the purest form of acoustic intimacy -- just his voice and the guitar after the "Requiem" introduction. Being in daily grief and torment for almost 500 days, he melodized a funeral procession, burying an agony, being the sole attendant, shining a light in darkest night.

The fourth studio album -- Pain Matters -- by Rico Friebe came totally unexpected to him as well as it comes to you now! Deeply affected by personal occurrences within the further realms that already spawned Anthems For A Lost Generation (RELTIME 008CD), Rico fell into an abyss where anything became possible -- anything raw, spell-binding, meditative and bold as Pain Matters.

Puestel meets his alter ego Friebe again! Can you imagine that this whole song came to Rico Friebe in a dream? In that dream, he was sitting in a strange living room, playing a live set with very odd, weird and partially never-seen-before equipment while everyone was annoyingly talking to him (while performing) -- one person right next to him even told him that he frequently manages to eat glass by accident. According to all this obscurity, he tried to escape into his performance, just looking straight into a weird countertop electronic device that created sound and suddenly he played this completely unknown song with these special vocals kicking in and he immediately fell in love with and got lost in it, forgetting all about the strange situation he was in -- the distracting voices around him fell into a mute state. Shortly afterwards, he woke up and kept trying to remember all the details, the lyrics, the melody, the production, just anything, wandering around like a maniac. Finally, all of it went pretty well and you're now listening to a dream composition. Magic everywhere!

The third album by Rico Friebe is a clearance, an outcry, an universe within itself, a hope and a message at once -- sending out Anthems For A Lost Generation! After his preceding albums of intimacy Word Value (RELTIME 005CD, 2023) and Faces Meet (RELTIME 006LP, 2023), based on personal tragedies and the accompanying struggles, Rico Friebe has something to tell to a whole generation and delivers ten radiant and distinct top-notch productions that find a most modern and futuristic sound within different styles of pop music while his soft and emotive voice is hovering above all. Originally, Anthems For A Lost Generation has been recorded as an acoustic double-album, but Rico Friebe threw it all out, wrote new songs and found a truly more fitting sound after he realized that there could only be one musical outcome to tell these stories: Songs like "Bad Seed," "I Like Memes," "Redo," "Games," or "Lazy, Bored And Sad" are milestones of capturing a complete zeitgeist and beyond. Each line within the lyrics is taken from close and personal experiences and interactions that made him undergo a whole spectrum of emotions, creating deep worries and sadness, but also a far hope. Feel lost? Be found! With Anthems Of A Lost Generation.

Shortly after his recent single release Don't Hurt Me Now and its accompanying B-sides, Rico Friebe presents his follow-up "So... Hi!" --a heartfelt dedication to the good moments in life, somehow deeply inspired by '80s and '90s pop music. Alongside, he presents his meditational songs "Me&You" and the Zen-like instrumental "Tiger Tundra" from a same-titled album that has never been released (yet)...

Rico Friebe is back with the album Faces Meet after his recent debut Word Value and delivers his personal "deer in the headlight" moment. What once appeared sparely uncertain and questioning, equaling the fragile try to overcome a state of darkness and forsakenness, now forms into a frenzy of confrontational flashes on Faces Meet. Like reflecting on the uncertainties presented on Word Value, Faces Meet reveals some genuinely harrowing findings, creating a wholesome musical moment in time that might never happen like this again. Besides the uncompromising statements as to find in the opener "Look At Me," refined perceptions in "Nowhere To Run" or "Fifty-One," open-hearted calls in "Do More" and "Let Go," Rico's pivotal confrontation with the irrevocable truth and emotional dissection peaks in his heartbreaking story on "The Best Talk" which marks the crucial lynchpin of the whole album. Like faces (and therefore people) are constantly meeting everywhere, being faced with the decision how honest and open to meet at all, Faces Meet happens to be an even more involved metaphor about surrendering to your true inner self in a mirror-like situation. Deeply rooted in the seeds of his debut album Word Value, Rico follows a highly natural and severely plain musical language while implementing new and further ideas and elements throughout his sonic landscape.

Cassette version. After 36 years without singing one word, unforeseeable tragedy and its consecutive challenges made Rico Friebe finally find his voice, suddenly and fluently starting to write songs full of intimacy and subtle storytelling -- now presented on his debut singer album, Word Value. Processing the encounter with a special person and the lasting aftermath, all songs are perfused by an emotional sincerity and serenity, dealing with a rise and fall of depression and hope while furthermore exploring forgotten chasms and grievances from his further past. Word Value is tracing an arc as the first of four albums that are deeply connected, based on one another, followed next by the second LP Faces Meets later in 2023. In times of fast rising technology, artificial intelligence, social deconstruction, inflation of language and morality, the most basic and natural human needs haven't ever changed -- re-find them while closing your eyes, opening your soul and putting on Word Value...

Rico Puestel enters the stage right as Odd Hands with the eclectic and one-of-a-kind album Scarcities, produced between 2019 and 2020. Not being nearly sure about the actual reasons for coming up with the project name and album title at hand, the whole conceptual setup is based within the triviality of a small site office space that drifts into some kind of hallucinogen dreamscape triggered by the pureness of its own calculability, emerging into a multi-layered unpredictability. What happens next is something beyond words, only music manages to express once again... A wildly polyrhythmic, shakily emotional and mind-bending ride through the realms of unbolting electronica, drum'n'bass, broken beats, IDM, experimental techno, and beyond stirs up mechanical structures melting with weirdly orchestrated fragments of instruments and vocals, melodies and harmonies -- embedded into a surge of dense and saturated acoustics. Scarcities is all about an overriding coherency that endures constant change of perception and perspective throughout its musical modules and components. Besides a sidechain bow towards the early works from Warp grounds, this album takes its agenda to a higher plane, creating a vigorously individual approach on sound design, aesthetics and storytelling. This vast trip, reaching for the highest highs while digging right into an uncertain depth leaves you hanging in a multiplex of moments while Odd Hands already exited stage left before it is and will be known what has actually happened here...

Rico Puestel debuts on his Time In The Special Practice Of Relativity label with a mind-boggling journey of 41 minutes -- split in two parts to fit on vinyl. Heptakaideka is what it won't be and will be what it never was: Something from in-between worlds, a place beyond far beyond, where time dissolves into relativity... Starting off with a hazy half-grasp hint of what's to come, a mysteriously pervasive bionic loop emerges, slowly coalescing with a bone-dry groove on the rise. Taking up a first quadrant of the track, already gnawing into the long-term memory, it manages to gradually establish itself along the pathway while the "rhythmatics" endure some subtle layer-shifting with occult-like strings come sliding in from somewhere unknown like an admonitory subtext. Being halfway through (and all the way in), everything smoothly crumbles down to its basic framework, still shaking off its own reminiscences while foregone vestiges almost perilously try to reassemble themselves. All of that leading to a clearly unforeseen yet fortunate drift into a 1980s-like synth peak time section after about 27 minutes being in that track, finally cherishing an evolving emotional felicity and the climax of its own being that tends to feel like an overarching salvation. As everything being eventually finite, the track starts to bring to mind where it came from by assuredly falling back into a story told before with the well-established bionic loop that once used to run free, sounding somehow different and more tamed now. Ending with dignity, the consistently resurfaced admonitory strings lead the way to its conclusion and possibly new beginnings, solely leaving behind the heartbeat-like booming that carried it all, now fading away... Coming into existence during a series of multiple productions of exuberant proportions with Rico making the studio his citadel-like stronghold, this is an extensive story of desires, instincts, pride, fall, mirth, solicitude, tension, détente and basically life itself while subtly yet versatilely entertaining on a dodgy yet accessible level throughout the wingspread of techno, house, minimal, dub, electronica, and ambient influences. The included CD not only brings you the title track in the guise of its non-split completeness but eminently churns out the extra drumming dub treat "Dekaepta" for a pleasurable groove-delight as well as the trippy bonus beauty "Vosem'".
