"At the invitation of composer Martin Sturm, Singh composed four pieces for the Liszt organ at Denstadt, which, inspired by the composer's 'rural organ experiments' with cantor and organist Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg, explore the sound spectrum of this unique instrument. The approach is far less strict than that recently adopted by Éliane Radigue or members of the loose association of Stockholm composers and organ nerds such as Kali Malone or the Berlin-based Ellen Arkbro. Singh's composition and Sturm's playing respectively concede the instrument its own peculiarities and thus a ghostly life of its own. mewl infans offers yet another of the numerous contemporary and forward-looking perspectives; one of the most innovative ones at that." --Field Notes Berlin (Releases of the Month)
In the 1850s the influential composer Franz Liszt, who was living in Weimar, Germany at the time, carried out, with the famous cantor Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg, a series of "ländlichen Orgelexperimente" (rural organ experiments) in Thuringia -- investigating various instruments and their capabilities for contemporary music. They eventually settled on the organ in Denstedt because of its high quality. Many years later, award-winning organist Martin Sturm would invite the Berlin-based composer Rishin Singh to repeat these "ländlichen Orgelexperimente" with him and they again chose the organ at Denstedt, now named in honor of Liszt, as the best instrument -- the most flexible and expressive -- to perform and record Singh's music for organ. mewl infans is a contemporary classical piece that invites modern listeners to ponder the enduring pull of an instrument that was first conceived more than 2,000 years ago and has, in recent years, been rediscovered by a new generation of composers and listeners. Throughout the larger architecture of the four movements, melodic motifs return over and over, fractured by noise, fragmented by carefully calibrated alternate tunings, dissolving into thin air, and generating drones which then transform into new melodic variations. Over the 44 minutes of the piece the organist at times attempts to exert complete control over the instrument, and at other times relinquishes all control entirely. Conceptually rigorous and emotionally charged, mewl infans rewards deep listening and patience. At times conjuring a sense of doom, at other times suspense, pastoral drift, or aquatic submersion, the album is a universe of tiny details comprised of noise and air, of the journey each tone takes from birth to expiration. Singh has been commissioned by the GRAMMY-nominated JACK Quartet. RIYL: Anna von Hausswolff, Olivier Messiaen, Max Reger, Kali Malone, Ellen Arkbro, Kevin Drumm, Maria Horn.
"An endless and captivating exploration of one organ's timbres and tones. Both whispered and shouted, large and small, close and far, Singh's work is both unsettling and a balm, and has invited me to reconsider pitch, consonance, dissonance, tension and release." --Clarice Jensen, artistic director of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME)

In 2018, Mats Gustafsson provided raw saxophonic material for the elusive Wendy Gondeln, who sometimes applied a scalpel, sometimes a pneumatic drill, to rework, remix, reimagine all the Swede's squeaks, pops, blats, and tones. In some places, Gondeln adds violent violin to thicken the roux, making Ornette's fiddling seem like Yehudi Menuhin. Uncommon bedfellows: disjunct techno and improvised music. But the Shitholes make it work brilliantly, even inviting minimal techno pioneer and co-founder of Cologne's seminal Kompakt label Wolfgang Voigt to edit and remix two of the twisted tracks. The CD's other guest star, engineer Martin Siewert, contributes guitar and lap top guitar to a couple of tracks. Not your usual any kind of music, The Shithole Country & Boogie Band bends genres and upends style. Spasmodic dance music or highly conceptual experimental sound art -- it's a thin line Gondeln and Gustafsson tread on these eight diverse tracks, but an irresistibly fun one, too.
Personnel: Wendy Gondeln - violin, electronic treatments, and more; Mats Gustafsson - piano mate, saxophones, and live electronics; Wolfgang Voigt - editing and mix (track 3 and 8); Martin Siewert - guitar and lap top guitar (track 1 and 7).

The Vanishing is the long-awaited return of abstract electronic duo Oren Ambarchi and Martin Ng, in a remarkable collaboration with the acclaimed new music group Ensemble Offspring. Working together with the ensemble in 2013 for a series of concerts and recording sessions, Ambarchi and Ng developed a suite of pieces that build on the distinctive sonic language established by their three previous duo albums -- released between 2000 and 2006 -- of ringing bell-like tones and sustained hums with a new palette of acoustic textures. Recording material together as a duo as they had in the past, Ambarchi and Ng then supervised Ensemble Offspring as they recreated these recordings on their instruments, using the original recordings as audio scores. The result is a disorienting play of mirroring and imitation that blurs the boundaries between acoustic & electronic sound. On the opening piece, the aptly named "Simulacrum I", bowed violin harmonics mimic feedback tones and dispersed vibraphone attacks recall the glitching bell textures prominent in Ambarchi and Ng's earlier work for electric guitar and turntable, which were themselves often uncannily reminiscent of acoustic sounds such as Tibetan prayer bowls. On "Woods", two vibrating bass drums create an ominous landscape of rumbling tones that call to mind Ambarchi's past work with abstract doom lords Sunn O))). Channeling giants of 20th century music, such as Giacinto Scelsi and Luigi Nono, as well as contemporary composers like Klaus Lang, the restrained palette of strings and percussion present throughout the record creates a distinct sound world, yet each of the five pieces possesses its own compositional identity. On "Recife" (arranged by Australian composer James Rushford), Ambarchi and Ng's guitar and turntables join Ensemble Offspring for one of the record's highlights, a delicate tapestry woven from subtly overlapping sonic events. Finally, the closing side-long title piece acts as the perfect summation of the record as a whole: beginning in silence, it builds into a densely buzzing texture of closely tuned harmonics before gently returning to the silence from which it came. Intended as the next step in a continuing project in which Ambarchi and Ng will go on to use these two LPs directly as part of their live performances, The Vanishing is a unique document of two artists reimagining the potential of their previous work, made possible through collaboration with a group of world-class musicians.

A chance opportunity to hang out and play a few shows in Eastern Europe led to a one-off recording date, in which Jon Langford and Martin Bramah laid down four songs. Langford's "Worm In Your Ear" is a new original and was subsequently tinkered with back in Chicago, while Bramah's "Stone Tumbling Stream" is a new fast-paced version of one of his best tunes. Bramah and Langford alone sing and play bass, drums, and guitar. Edition of 500.

"The second race for the Boxer Tuning Trophy 2005 is about to start. Both teams have presented an outstanding qualifying race and will now start from the pole position. Here comes the starting grid: team 1: M.A.N.D.Y the drivers Bodmer & Jung, at the booka shade box, again and as usual will start from the pole position. Their rather rough style is remarkable and unusual for M.A.N.D.Y. maybe this will be their new start for 2005. In a groovy and unerring way, they are chopping up the track 'Donauwellen' by Wessling & Schrom until the VIPs at the tribune take off their fur coats and start indulging in the finest, excessive champagne celebration. Cheers! Team 2: calmer in the beginning comes Frank Martinq. Four years after his first race for Boxer, he finally is raring to go for his second one with stunning revolutions per minute at the sudden kick-down of the inner side -- full of grip and grit."

"Tetuzi Akiyama has in recent years attracted tremendous interest on the Japanese and international improvised music scenes. In addition to performing many times in Europe, America, Australia, and New Zealand, he's been releasing a steady stream of solo and group recordings on these countries' labels. Oimacta, a duo album he recorded in a Sydney studio with Martin Ng (turntable feedback), promises to become one of his most widely recognized works. Akiyama's instrument here is the acoustic guitar. Ng, who lived in Sydney at the time of recording and has since moved to the U.S., is known for his duo album with Sydney guitarist Oren Ambarchi, and for his participation, along with Martin Tétreault and Otomo Yoshihide, in the 'Turntable Hell' UK tour of May '02. If you didn't know beforehand what instruments the musicians were playing on these four tracks, you'd be hard put to identify the sources of their sound. Its rich colors, and the mysterious atmosphere it evokes, are awe-inspiring."

"Vigil is the second duo album by Australian composers Oren Ambarchi and Martin NG from Sydney after 2001's Reconnaissance on the Staubgold label. It's a dreamlike sonic excursion based upon the fluid architectural modulation of harmonics and resonances. Recalling the landmark experiments of the sonic arts union (Robert Ashley, David Behrman, Alvin Lucier and Gordon Mumma), Ambarchi and NG create an enigmatic tapestry of pulsing, shimmering and shifting sound which represents a subtle and compelling realignment of eastern and western minimalist traditions. Austrian designer Tina Frank of Mego has added two short films in mpeg format to this release which in its slow and subtle moves match perfectly with the fragile beauty of Ambarchi's and NG's music. Ambarchi has become a solo performer whose stirring sonic experiments with the guitar have seen him recently record for acclaimed exploratory music labels Touch, Staubgold and Tzadik, and perform and collaborate with artists such as Fennesz and Otomo Yoshihide, and revered minimalist composer Phill Niblock. Martin NG whose main instrument is the turntable is another outstanding character in Sydney's rich experimental music circuit. He released an album for the Mego label with Farmer's Manual's Hiaz Gmachl, recorded for Grob with Jim Denley and was part of 2002's 'Turntable Hell' tour with among others Otomo Yoshihide and Martin Tetrault."

"The first duo release by Australian composers Oren Ambarchi and Martin Ng from Sydney -- a trilogy of pieces based upon the fluid architectural modulation of harmonics and resonances. Oren Ambarchi's work to date has been rooted in the exploration and extension of the guitar's outer limits with solo releases Insulation on Touch and Stacte 3 on Plate Lunch as well as collaborations with Robbie Avenaim on Tzadik and AMM's Keith Rowe, Fennesz, Peter Rehberg and Pimmon on Ritornell. Electronic musician Martin Ng currently works with such diverse artists as Farmers Manual's Hiaz Gmachl and woodwinds player Jim Denley. The unique full-color art work accompanying this release was created by Viennese graphic designer Tina Frank (Mego)."
