MONKEY 049EP
|
The second single for Alex Banks' debut album Illuminate (MONKEY 043CD/LP), like its predecessor, features the inimitable Elizabeth Bernholz. "A Matter of Time" is an electronic dancefloor ballad. Shuffled kick drums and soft arpeggios make for a laidback groove while a warmly distorted analogue pad and corresponding bassline push the track forward into club twilight. The record comes packed with a straight 4/4 remix by Frank Wiedemann of Ame and Howling fame, which expectantly evokes banging acid techno and its newer re-definitions.

Double LP version. Housed in a gatefold sleeve. Having received wide critical acclaim for his remixes of Bonobo and Andreya Triana, and award-winning DJ mix for Ninja Tune's Solid Steel series, Alex Banks spent two years in the studio working on his latest album Illuminate. After meeting 50weapons' Phon.o when they played together in Zurich in 2013, the link to Monkeytown was made. These 10 tracks explode with vitality, flecked with subtlety and depth, at once utterly contemporary but tinged with all the genres and flavors he's ever dipped into. The single, All You Could Do, for instance, replete with a Phon.o remix, comes on like a pin-sharp glitch-hop Esben & The Witch, but elsewhere "Sheya" throbs like Art Department's deep house at a dubstep convention, opener "Silent Embrace" is a silky match for the likes of London Grammar and Jesse Ware, and the bouncing "Initiate" is pitched midway between what Maceo Plex and James Holden are up to. All in all, it's a potent brew.

The All You Could Do EP from DJ Alex Banks sees him exploring similar territory to his eclectic Monkeytown label bosses Modeselektor, fusing techno crunch with the electro-indie songwriting suss of groups such as Animal Collective. Plucked guitar comes together with pulsating machine rhythms, all made emotive by the melancholic vocals of Elizabeth Bernholz of Gazelle Twin. As well as the original "All You Could Do," there's a beautifully stark, pulsating remix by Phon.o, a slower "Alternate" take, and a brand-new tune called "Phosphorus" that comes on like the mighty Crystal Castles raving it up at a Polish warehouse party.
