A Colourful Storm presents a new album by Beequeen, the duo of Frans de Waard (Kapotte Muziek) and Freek Kinkelaar (Brunnen). Over two long-form pieces, new material from 2020 and almost-discarded fragments dating back to 1988 are collaged to form a brand-new composition. Think woodblock, guitar, static radio signals, ethereal ambience. An honorable addition to Beequeen's discography and a beautiful piece of the Dutch avantgarde with historic ties to Edward Ka-Spel, De Fabriek, Merzbow, and Nurse With Wound. Mastered by Peter Johan Nyland. Full-color sleeve photography by Alfred Boland.

In the fickle world of pop music, Dutch band Beequeen forms an extraordinary beacon. Their fragile sound dances the fine thread that links experimental and pop music. The result is surreal dream-pop. It is therefore no surprise that Beequeen has been described a band straight out of David Lynch's TV series Twin Peaks. Frans de Waard (laptop) and Freek Kinkelaar (guitar and voice) have been making music together since 1988 as Beequeen. In 2007, singer Olga Wallis was added to the lineup. Her warm and intimate voice is the perfect icing on the cake for Beequeen. Around Midnight was recorded in 2013 and is loosely based on a story about Japanese Enka singer Michi Aoyama, the "runaway singer." Engineered and produced by Peter van Vliet, known for his work with the legendary 1980s Dutch new wave band Mekanik Kommando and, in later years, The Use of Ashes.

"Some bands produce a CD every week; by now it seems 'normal' to have three year gaps in releasing records for Beequeen, which is a fresh antidote to the music business of more = more. For Beequeen, like good wine, things mature given more time. Whereas Sandancing (IMPREC 177CD) featured Olga Wallis a guest singer, on this new album she's a fully fledged band member, adding her beautiful voice to Beequeen's off beat songs. Port Out Starboard Home features surreal dream-pop, but always with that unique twist that is Beequeen. The album is loosely based around the theme of 'traveling'. The prophetic opening of 'A While A Way' (how true) transports you into the CD, which equally balances on vocal and instrumental pieces from introspective moments of 'Patience' and the title track to the up-tempo 'Someday Today'. Beequeen displays their wicked sense of humor in 'The Lord is my shepherd'. This new album is again produced by Erik Drost (The Legendary Pink Dots) with the help of Petra Randewijk."

"After the by now usual gap of some two years, Beequeen is ready to present their latest album, further maturing their sound from The Bodyshop (also on Important Records). More song-based, this album features new vocals by Olga Wallis solely (with some backing by Freek Kinkelaar). Well rounded pop songs in some places, but Beequeen never forgets to put in some strange element, without leaping in the dark alley of pointless experiment. Orchestral in 'The Illogical Song,' collage like in 'The Edie Three Step' or a simple rhythm machine in 'The Honeythief.' Beequeen does all, and with great care and seemingly ease. This album features also the help of Barry Gray, former (and first) guitarist of The Legendary Pink Dots, and would not have been the album that is without the invaluable productional skills of Erik Drost."

"It took Frans de Waard and Freek Kinkelaar two years to complete the recordings for The Bodyshop, the successor to their much-acclaimed CD Ownliness from 2002. The Bodyshop continues where Ownliness left off. Ownliness marked a distinct break with Beequeen's past. The ambient-industrial drone music of yesteryear was said goodbye and the Beequeen's love of pop music returned. The instruments changed from organs, synthesizers and sound effects to guitars, drums, bass and guest musicians on cello and even vocals (a distinctive first for Beequeen). The Bodyshop features two of these remarkable vocals tracks; a cover of Nick Drake's 'Black Eyed Dog' (sung by Antenne's Marie-Louise Munck) and the indeed very sad track 'Sad Sheep'. Although Beequeen never cites influences, it's easy spot their interest in the Beatles' psychedelic period and latter day Talk Talk in combination with a love for krautrock and microsound -- not the most likely of combinations, but somehow it all makes sense on The Bodyshop."

"A Touch of Brimstone features many unreleased recordings from 1989 to 1995, as well as a one cut from the now long-deleted Scala Destillans LP. This release comes with a 32-page booklet, with many exclusive flyers from concerts and hilarious, never before seen, photographs of the band and a fully updated discography. Many of the previous releases by Beequeen are no longer available and this collection fills a gap in many ways: the gap in the collection of truly devoted fans and newcomers alike, who wish to take a look in the past. Beequeen explores the depths of mind music in their own blend of electronics, drones and unique use of samples."
