2022 repress. Booka Shade reveal their ninth studio album with the arrival of Dear Future Self on Blaufield Music. Leaders, purveyors, and pioneers within the emotive, melodic realms of house and techno, German duo Booka Shade have remained at the forefront of the scene for over 25 years. Following the long-player Cut The Strings in 2018, the iconic duo deliver their latest extended body of work as they unveil the thirteen-track Dear Future Self on home turf -- a project which welcomes an emphasis on club-ready sounds. Recorded across the globe as the band continually tour the worldwide circuit, the album takes in recorded sessions from New Zealand to their home city of Berlin, and features collaborations with artists from Iceland, South Africa, England, and Germany to deliver a collection of dancefloor-focused cuts that capture the band's current club output. Title cut and opener "Dear Future Self" alongside South African spoken word artist Lazarusman and the bubbling "Red Medina" provide early examples of this ethos, with both tracks featuring previously on the label but equally finding their place within the project with ease, a nod to their approach within their ever-evolving live sets. "Polar Lights" featuring fellow Berlin based artist Joplyn and "Perfect In A Way" with Icelandic vocalist Kaktus Einarsson combine smooth vocal melodies with darker synths to balance light and dark to offer some trademark Booka Shade soundscapes, whilst previously released tracks such as "Sacred", "I Go, I Go", and "Torch" undergo slick re-worked interpretations, with the resulting productions providing a fresh take for the new decade. "Acid Brain" and "Rigera" up the energy via sweeping leads and crisp percussion, whilst "To The Sea" featuring Eli & Fur provides yet another dynamic as slow blooming melodies and organic percussion go to work alongside further infectious vocal work. "Plexus 3AM" offers up playful tones backed by more menacing and hypnotic bass licks, whilst "NZ Modular" takes cues from its title as off-kilter analog synths go to work amongst crunchy drums and sweeping atmospherics, before closing proceedings with "Atlantic Beam". A body of work showcasing the duo's ever-evolving and forever refining palette, Dear Future Self delivers an experience that looks set to become a must-have for fans of the band, new and old, and continues their ongoing status as one of the most celebrated acts within electronic music. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold.

Beginning of 2017 Booka Shade released the most challenging album of their career, Galvany Street (BFMB 033CD/DLX-CD/LP). Not only did it take much longer than any of their previous albums to complete, it also meant the most radical shift in musical direction. Arno Kammermeier on the record: "Galvany Street is the album we wanted to write for a long time. The collaboration with Craig Walker brings in the perfect kind of vocals to complete the music." As a result, Galvany Street marks the most important Booka Shade album since the release of their milestone album Movements (2006). The album feature Craig Walker, Daniel Spencer, Yates, and Urdur. A new level of production quality meets a cutting-edge mix of '80s and '90s pop references and modern beats and sounds. In the past couple of months Fritz Hilpert, a friend of the band and member of legendary electronic pioneers Kraftwerk, who just won the Grammy 2018 for "Best Dance/Electronic Album", started to work on Dolby Atmos mixes of the album, which take the songs quite literally to a new sonic dimension. Dolby Atmos is a relatively new audio format for creating and playing back multichannel movie soundtracks. It was developed to give movie sound a more three-dimensional effect. All album tracks, plus the bonus track "Just Like Tonight", are presented in this unique 3D experience on Pure Audio BluRay, accompanied by Headphone Surround 3D mixes for headphones and super high quality stereo files in 24bit/48 kHz. The disc is compatible with all BluRay players.

The third and final single from Booka Shade's Galvany Street album with Craig Walker (BFMB 033CD/LP/DLX-CD) is rather special and contains undoubtedly the most obvious pop hit of the album. "Loneliest Boy" is often described as Pet Shop Boys meets Booka Shade. The previously unreleased single and extended versions are quite different from the album version. One highlights the pop qualities and gets straight to the point, the other keeps the dancefloor in mind. The previously unreleased "Just Like Tonight" could compete with the best moments of New Order. It is easily one of Booka Shade's catchiest tunes.

Booka Shade return with Galvany Street (BFMB 033CD/DLX-CD/LP), marking the return to their pop roots, in collaboration with former Archive singer Craig Walker and a few additional guests like Urdur (GusGus), Yates, and Daniel Spencer. The second single from the album is Numb The Pain, a disco inspired feel good pop song. Booka Shade created two special versions of the song: A shorter, more instant "Single Version", and a longer, club-friendly "Extended Mix", inspired by classic '80s 12" releases. It also features an unreleased exclusive song, the instrumental tech house tune "Fade Away", a hint at Booka Shade's past.

Booka Shade are Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier, production masterminds behind the first 13 Get Physical releases. This is their debut full-length, originally released in 2004. On Memento, the two producers observe a healthy balance between pop appeal and experimentation, concocting an unusual blend of modern 4/4 sketches and timeless titles. These tracks take us on a journey through time and space, where, in the sprawling universe, elements from different eras and categories seem to meet and merge almost by chance. "Vertigo," based on an obvious disco groove, is swathed in a breathtakingly beautiful, cinematic soundscape of unparalleled drama. "Double Identity" and "Memento" pursue similar paths. Tricky, minimalist rhythm structures support the dense atmospheres suffused by short glimpses of Basic Channel and Detroit references as well as mysterious vocal slivers. Other passages are reminiscent of ravers attacking a Missy Elliot track with a vacuum cleaner, homages to '80s synth pop bands clashing with planet funk, broad psychedelic rock or even minimal trance, always pervaded by fragments ostensibly lifted from fast and furious movie soundtracks. All of this is held together by intense aesthetics, turning Memento into an intoxicating, emotional play of the senses. Memento hits with velvet-coated sucker punches, its prowling, understated menace creates evocative moods mapping out a fresh alternative for electronic music.
