Double LP version. Anthony Child, AKA Surgeon, presents the second volume of recordings of Buchla Music Easel recorded in the jungle of Maui. Again, Childs is in a more ambient guise and setting, as the calm breath of the jungle sets a real time back-drop for his electronic explorations. There is no additional layering and all environmental sounds simply "occurred" throughout the improvisations. The range on display veers from melodic drones to sparkling arpeggios all revolving around a thick bed of electronic (Buchla) and acoustic (environmental) interplay. "Nine Personality Type Map" hovers on a bed of syncopated rhythms whilst the nearby sonic mist of the forest seethes in-and-out of the frame whilst "A Nightfall Of Diamonds" provides a sonic analogy for the darkness and light contradiction that occurs only in such rich natural environments. The simultaneous acts of improvising, listening and creating provide a rich setting for the curious listener. Another gem in a catalog filled with gold. Recorded in Haiku-Pauwela, Maui between February 3rd and 14th of 2016.

After melting minds since the mid-'90s with his beat-based productions, renowned techno producer Anthony Child aka Surgeon now brings the fundamental components of electronic sound production to the fore with Electronic Recordings from Maui Jungle Vol. 1. Focusing on the development of timbre and texture, Child creates exquisite drones that offer insight into his improvisatory sensibility and dig deep into the potential of modular synthesis. As the title indicates, Child has chosen a very special setting for this endeavor; the jungle of Maui seems to have acted as a stimulus for this exercise in concentration and trance. The intertwining of the electronic instrument and the sublime sounds of nature opens up an intimate resonant chamber. Birds, insects, and raindrops are allowed to break through, and the listener can sense the thick, humid air and deep colors of the surroundings resonating in the pastose synth lines. Some tracks offer beautifully built overtone-drones, while others are structured by playful arpeggios that create a shining bright texture and seduce the listener into a state of disintegration. At the same time, Child gives priority to the graininess of the instrument, to emphasize the haptic quality and inner tension of the sounds themselves. In the end, these minimalist procedures have been compiled into an unpretentious collection of sonic and atmospheric micro-jewels, inviting us to give ourselves over entirely and exclusively to listening.

"NNA is honored to be releasing the latest full-length solo recording from Anthony Child, UK electronic music legend perhaps best known for his forward-thinking techno production as Surgeon. A native of Northamptonshire England, Child has been at the helm as a DJ, writer, and producer of electronic music for nearly 20 years, creating works for reputable labels such as Counterbalance, Tresor, and Downwards. Aside from dancefloor-commanding techno, Anthony has also been creating a private collection of tone-based experimental works over the years, much of which has become the backbone for his latest solo album. The Space Between People and Things finds Child revisiting his collection of unreleased experimental studies from the last 16 years, collaging them into an entirely new framework. Using a sound palette reminiscent to his techno works, Child focuses in on the molecules within the sonic textures and frequencies, delicately emphasizing the negative space that surrounds them. These sounds are then intensified to form vast new worlds, enveloping the listener with bright, crystalline detail and clarity. These two side-long pieces seem to exist and not exist simultaneously, filling the listening space as an almost physical presence, to a point where they blend harmoniously with the air that surrounds you. The brainchild of intense focus and exploration, this record serves as an artifact that gives the listener a very personal glimpse into the mind of one of electronic music's most creative producers. According to Child himself, this record 'consists of location recordings, tonal experiments, and thought-forms from many different positions in space and time. It is the sound of the space between people and things.' Mastered and cut by Lupo at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin."
