MOBILEE 087EP
|
Marcin Czubala is back with a very strong EP for Mobilee. This EP features four tracks, each of which are expertly produced with much more bass, rawness and energy than his previous releases. While the title-track warms the floor with drawn-out synths and an expectant bass line, "Memory Lane" is an obvious peak-time killer. Meanwhile, "Not Like This" and "Pleasure Control" carry a calmer, deep house vibe, with still enough of a kick to keep the floor moving.

Mobilee's Back To Back compilation series has been a staple part of the imprint's release schedule over the years. Originally started by Anja Schneider, it has since been presented by GummiHz, Miss Jools, and most recently, And.id. For the fifth installment, The long-time label member and leading artist Marcin Czubala is at the helm. In addition to being a compilation of some of their favorite Mobilee releases, the format of the Back To Back series is intended to give the curating artist a whole CD's-worth of creative space which they can use entirely in their own way. Naturally, this has paved the way for an interestingly diverse compilation series, each served with an individual twist. In this case, you are really getting your money's worth as CD2 is comprised of a whole album's worth of brand new material from Marcin Czubala. CD1 features a selection of Marcin Czubala's favorite recent and upcoming Mobilee releases, and he has had an impressive array to choose from. While selecting label hits from And.id, Sebo K, and Pan-Pot, he also includes a track from Dan Curtin's album, Free, and a couple from the Hi Five Mobilee compilation by label guests and friends Vincenzo and Daniel Stefanik with Tripiando Los Colores. Upcoming releases from Anja Schneider and Miss Kittin also make the cut, so there is plenty to get through and the diversity certainly does justice to Mobilee's extensive output over the past year. On CD2, once again diversity is the key, as Marcin Czubala demonstrates the complete breadth of his musical talents with this collection of nine tracks, from dancefloor groovers to more ambient soundscapes, as well as classic pop cuts. Along the way, he invites other artists to join him including fellow countrymen Catz 'N' Dogz as well as Anthony Collins, Metrobox, Jozif, Affkt and Polish vocalist and producer Novika, all of whom bring their personal touch to the productions. The album as a whole also comes with a lot of genuine instrumental recordings and vocals, giving a welcome live touch to some of the tracks. Other artists include Rodriguez Jr. and Czubala & Hugo.

Marcin Czubala returns to Mobilee with Mezcalinna, featuring his unmistakable signature marks -- slinky, undulating grooves full of bizarre twists and turns that surprise the listener. "Day 1" begins with a heavy bass line, a stuttering percussive beat, vocal chants and kick drum drop. Accented by drum fills and cymbal crashes, the track reaches its climax with the entrance of a lone piano chord. "Day 2" is a contrasting, night-time dancefloor stormer with a darker sound and haunting, reverb-laced vocals.

Berolina is the fourth single from Marcin Czubala and also a teaser for his album Chronicles Of Never. Backed by a remix from Russ Gabriel, it's a diverse and devastating two-track package. All the Czubala signature elements are here: bumping drums, samples, pinprick tones, deep, steady bass and mutating sounds. Gabriel turns the original into a muscular groove marked with bell tones and warm stabs. His approach is deeply funky and goes straight to the heart of the dancefloor.

MOBILEE 042LP
|
2x12" version. Poland's Marcin Czubala presents Chronicles Of Never, his first full-length for Mobilee and his first full-length since 2001, despite dozens of singles over the years. This is not just a collection of dance tunes, these tracks all flow together like the colors of the spectrum, twisting and turning as imperceptibly as the moments of a long night out. Certain sounds and motifs occur and re-occur -- muted hand drums, faraway voices, gleaming keyboards and dusty syncopations. But despite a certain consistency of mood -- there's something hushed about Marcin's music, even at its most intense. Every track invents its own world and operates according to its own logic. Not the logic of the club, or much less the logic of "minimal," but a unique ecology of sounds adapted specifically to their environment. "Los Compañeros," inspired by Marcin's first tour of Mexico, is one of the album's stand-out club tracks, propelled by economical percussion and insistent, looped vocals; halfway through, queasy keyboards fill the soundfield, making this one of the eeriest club hits of the year. "Pravda" is more upbeat, full of bright, glassy percussion with just the right degree of swing. "Alibi Room" is a place where fantastic narratives are spun, where reality is turned inside out -- a dryly percussive intro features an acoustic bass that roams freely in a kind of reverie. "Dazed And Confused" is a savvy exercise in focused, minimalist funk, with lots of tiny acoustic drum samples. "Spectacles For Human" includes jewel-like synthesizer tones and echoes of Detroit. "30 May" is on the surface a celebratory track -- but odd detunings and frantic arpeggios suggest unease. "At The Beach In San Foca" is a slow, controlled burn that periodically flares up in the form of muted horns and panned, echoing voices. Sweeping filters and syncopated piano chords push the track ever forward, while a deep sub-bass grounds it firmly in the now. Chronicles Of Never is the chronicle of an imaginary place.

"Daybreak" incorporates silken, luminous tones and a teasing set of chords; unfolding slowly and inexorably. "Berolina" is all stoned seduction and weightlessness, full of contorted arpeggios, bubbly percussion, and a sexy female voice. "Los Compañeros," inspired by Marcin's first tour of Mexico, is one of the album's stand-out club tracks, propelled by economical percussion and insistent, looped vocals; halfway through, queasy keyboards fill the soundfield, making this one of the eeriest club hits of the year. "At The Beach In San Foca" is a slow, controlled burn that periodically flares up in the form of muted horns and panned, echoing voices. Sweeping filters and syncopated piano chords push the track ever forward, while a deep sub-bass grounds it firmly in the now. Finally, "Be Water" slows down and practices what it preaches, sending sampled percussion and xylophone tones into a winding current that's tugged at by eddying chords. Chronicles Of Never is the chronicle of an imaginary place.

The virtuoso producer Marcin Czubala from Poznan is back on Mobilee with a musical offering you can't refuse. He once again delivers the same groovy and unique Czubala quality with a theme inspired by Italian mafia movies from the late '70s. Wear a bullet-proof vest -- Mario Puzo would love this music.

Mobilee has a new and well-seasoned friend on board for 2007: Marcin Czubala. Between 1991-1994 Czubala performed over 300 classical music concerts at big events such as Nantes Festival (France), Warsaw Autumn (Poland), Singapore International Festival (Singapore) and performed with experimental music legend Krzysztof Penderecki in 1992. He released a lot of music in the '90s and was an important part of the Polish underground scene, with huge international response for his works. He is inspired by the sound of today and has concentrated all his knowledge and production skills on this new release. Super Constellation has a lot of old school flavor and an unstoppable groove with lots of sci-fi effects and complex arrangements.
