It was in 2011 that Dutch pair Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets quickly broke through in the electronic music scene. Since then they have become known for their widescreen approach to making and playing club-ready grooves. From deep to disco, tech to soul, they join the dots between the past and the present with their own sense of storytelling and do so in clubs around the world, as well as in their own studio. House might be the root of the Dam Swindle sound, but it takes nourishment from a much wider world of music.
It was their early, high impact tunes such as "The Wrap Around" and "The Break Up", that got dancers all over the world in a frenzy. Since then, the pair has constantly evolved and matured and continued to draw on all musical niches. Building bridges between them, their landmark 2018 album High Life or their Coffee in the Morning EP both furthered their take on house music with a real sense of timelessness and class.
Since 2013, the pair has also established their own Heist Recordings as a well respected label that is home to the majority of their own originals, though other underground mainstays such as Aus Music and Classic Music Company have also come calling. Heist is more than just a label, though -- it is a breeding ground for talents old and new; somewhere talent is nurtured and allowed to develop. Label showcases and special projects such as the yearly Roundup EP; where all artists from the past 12 months remix each other after a random selection process, furthers the family vibe and helps Heist stand out from crowd. Artists such as Nebraska, Adryiano, Kassian, Demuir, Makez, Max Graef, Pépé Bradock, Nachtbraker, Matthew Herbert, Ge-Ology, Byron the Aquarius, and many more have all contributed, proving that it is a place for unrestrained creatives to be free with their own sonic visions. The label looks as good as it sounds, too, thanks to visual artist Bas Koopmans's standout artwork designs.
Proof of Dam Swindle's widescreen approach to production is their long and talented list of collaborators, which includes the likes of acclaimed musician, Eric Clapton and John Mayer collaborator and Blue Note artist Tom Misch, US talent Seven Davis Jr., instrumental collective Jungle by Night, plus Marc de Clive-Lowe, Jitwam and Lorenz Rhode. Next to their own originals, a broad spectrum of artists have asked Dam Swindle for some of their special remix magic: on labels like Strut and Soundway they have reworked the legendary Pat Thomas, aka the "Golden voice of Africa," and gave his single "Yamona" a contemporary electronic edge, as well as The Mauskovic Dance Band's track "Space Drum Machine" and plenty more artists like Kerri Chandler, Mayer Hawthorne and Tom Misch. As their talent for bridging genres from all over the world continues to attract global attention, high profile projects keep rolling in from all points on the musical globe.
Dam Swindle are famously avid collectors of both old and new records, and it shows in their DJ sets, which keep you on your toes as they move freely and skillfully through different times, places and sounds. Rather than limiting themselves to a certain feeling or mood, Dam Swindle can call on classic house, obscure disco, African funk, soulful techno and plenty in between, all with the aim of making those special moments that crowds never forget. It is for that reason that their name has become a real stamp of authority and invention in the dance music world. Whatever they do, then, this pair do with irresistible charm.

AUS 200BPHY-EP
|
Dutch duo Dam Swindle appear on Aus Music's 200 series and two new house originals come with remixes from K-Lone and Chloe Robinson & DJ ADHD. Dam Swindle have been helping to define the underground house sound for a decade, not least with their Heist label. The pair deal in timeless, fad-free sounds that are rich with dance floor dynamics and hint at a love of everything from disco to tech and plenty in between. They are notorious crate diggers who have played the world's most cultured clubs, their recent track "Allright (Just A Tribute)" on Phonica's 20-year celebration has received widespread love by DJ's this summer on the festival circuit and now they offer up two more of their studio gems for their third full release on Aus. This EP is the second in a series of four releases from different artists to mark the 200th outing of Will Saul's influential Aus Music. It is an era-defining label that has platformed some of the scene's brightest stars way before they broke out. Since launching in 2006, the label has remained dedicated to releasing club-ready music with a cultured edge from deep and melodic house to the earliest bass- driven post-dubstep fusions. This EP kicks off with "The Last Time", a blissed-out deep house sound with impassioned vocal cries tugging at the heartstrings. Mellifluous synth daubs percolate through the mix to a captivating, feel- good effect. Next is "Come Back", an infectious house bubbler with gloopy synths and something of a garage shuffle in the kicks. It's fresh and packed with neon color that brims with soul. New school house and garage tastemaker and core Aus Music family member K-Lone steps up with a remix hot on the heels of his two-part EP series on the label. His version of "The Last Time" is typically deft as soft-focus chords swirl around prickly garage house beats. The distant vocal, the cavernous bass and the wistful feel all make it another classic. Last but not least, Chloé Robinson & DJ ADHD are frequent collaborators on labels like Fabric Originals as well as Chloé's Pretty Weird imprint where they serve up potent, bass-heavy sounds. Their version of "Come Back" is expertly stripped back. It teases and pleases with a blend of filthy low-end oscillations, slinky drums and tooting chord hooks that are effortlessly fun and effective.

Dam Swindle return to Heist in excellent form with a four-track EP in their signature style. The iconic Amsterdam duo returned to the studio after their much-lauded Minor Fools EP, where the lead track "That's Right" became one of the most heartwarming tracks 2023. The guys are known for their ability to bend different styles into something very much their own and their newest addition to the Heist catalog is no different. The Touch Me Again EP sees them go from sample-heavy house to classic '90s piano-driven tracks with a touch of acid and it's one you don't want to miss. The record starts with "Touch Me Again," a house jam with chopped vocals, energetic synth stabs and a big breakdown. Add to that a touch of acid and you've got a follow-up to their Phonica hit of 2023. "Hang On" takes you back into classic Swindle territory, with their signature sampling style and knack for finding those lush vocals. The synth chops and bassline give the track its upbeat energy and the distant filtered pads move in an ever so subtle way, that there's always something new happening while keeping the attention on that catchy main hook. On the flip, the guys take things a bit deeper with emotive vocals and introverted keys layered over a steady groove on their track "The Joy of Melancholy." Fast-forward to the drop and all that energy comes free with a huge piano break, which propels the track into a blissful "hands-in-the-air" dancefloor moment. The EP closes with "Forever and Ever," a gospel-inspired deep house tune full of organ hits and off-kilter sample chops. This four-track EP gives you jam upon jam upon jam and sees Dam Swindle solidify their position as the go-to artist in the house scene and keeps them at the forefront of electronic music.

Iconic duo Dam Swindle deliver once again with their Minor Fools EP. Last year, Dam Swindle celebrated their 10-year anniversary with the Keep on Swindling series. The hard-hitters "All I Want," "Good Woman," and "You" showed various sides of that much loved Swindle sound as well as some steps into a more leftfield electronic area. Now, they're back on Heist with a three-track club EP full of that recognizable upbeat energy. "That's Right" has Dam Swindle in full live mode, not unlike their timeless classic "Call of the Wild feat. Jungle by Night." Live keys, bass, percussion, and horns (the latter by the Jungle by Night's trumpet guru Bo Floor) give you the feeling like you're on stage with a full band, hearing them give their all to record this heartwarming piece of music. Over the course of its seven minutes, the duo takes you on an electrifying feel-good trip through the Swindle sonic universe. On The EP title track "Minor Fools," Dam Swindle go into classic US house mode. Shuffling hats, a bouncy bass and male vocal chops lay the foundation for some crunchy jazz chords (think Underground Resistance with a Swindle touch). The track builds tension with haunting organs, looped vocals and smart modulation in the keys. Add to that the bouncy synth section at the heart of the track and you've got a jam that slaps hard in the best way imaginable. The EP ends with the dreamy and contemplative "Soul's Lament"; A slow burner that builds and builds on a relentless rhythm of bells and skipping hi-hats. Slowly, a massive string section takes control of the track, after which, an acid line takes over that gives the track its driving electronic touch. It's a welcome deep note to an EP that shows you exactly why Dam Swindle are such well respected and versatile producers. Grab this record while you can and dance, dance, dance!

The third and final installment of Dam Swindle's Keep On Swindling series. This final ep holds two new originals, remixes by Nightmares on Wax and DJ Bone and the long-awaited re-release of their seminal track from 2013: "The Wrap Around". Keep On Swindling Pt. 3 kicks off with "You"; a fast-paced slice of electronic funk that sees the boys dive into heady club territory. With this track, they show a new direction in their sound that combines their vintage sampled-based soulfulness with modern percussive and melodic elements. The A side also holds "More Love"; a track that takes you back to what has been the center of the Dam Swindle sound in the past ten years. Conga loops, vocal chops, synth stabs and a simple string to keep the tension. Add to that a simple funk bass loop and you've got yourself a modern-day Swindle classic. On the flip, you'll find a special song from the Dam Swindle catalog: "The Wrap Around". When released on Huxley's now defunct Saints & Sonnets label back in 2013, the release sold out quickly and was never repressed. Now, it's available on vinyl through Heist Recordings. It's had a few touch-ups in arrangement and mixing for the 2022 mix, but the boys worked hard to maintain the rough edges that made the original loved by so many fans. Next is a collaboration with Nightmares on Wax, who delivers a brilliantly creative version of "64 Ways" featuring Mayer Hawthorne. NoW completely flips the original, opting to use the spoken word intro in a mangled and chopped way on top of a nasty groove and soaring bassline. The EP closes off with another special track: DJ Bone's "Doc Ciroc remix" of "The Wrap Around". DJ Bone goes for pacey percussion with a classic Detroit Techno feel. His version is minimalistic and raw, chopping up the vocal and using the original Prophet pad as a base layer of warmth.

After the chart-topping Keep On Swindling Pt. 1 (HEIST 061EP), that included summer anthem "All I Want" and the live jazz rework of "The Break Up" by Emma-Jean Thackray, Dam Swindle are now back with part two of their ten-year anniversary series. Keep On Swindling Pt. 2 includes a new Afro-tinged DS original, alongside a never-released remix of an obscure Guadeloupean record and remixes by rising star of the Detroit music scene Ash Lauryn and Rush Hour favorite Arp Frique. To top things off, the boys release their Afro-brass dancefloor burner "Call of the Wild" featuring Jungle by Night for the first time on a single. The EP kicks off with a new original production by DS: "Good Woman." This track has Dam Swindle on their best dancefloor behavior: Powerful live drums with an electronic edge and a big smudge of soul through smart sampling. The next track is somewhat of a special project. Tipped in 2019 by close friend Vincent "Venz" Reinders who now runs one of Amsterdam's finest venues Radioradio, Lars and Maarten started working on a rework of the song "A Ka Titine" by Guadeloupean band Gaoulé Mizik. The original release was only distributed from private press in small amounts, and therefore did not reach that many people. The Dam Swindle rework was first put out as a free download, but was taken offline quite soon after. Fast forward three years and we're here with an official remix of this amazing piece of music where the guys add an electronic twist to the original to bring that classic Gwo Ka music towards today's clubs. On the flip, we've got the amazing Ash Lauryn remixing the title track of Dam Swindle's 2018 album: High Life (HEIST 001CD/LP). This remix -- co-produced with Stefan Ringer -- takes a deep and grooving approach to the original, with new heady percussion to add that original Detroit flavor. The next track is a remix by of our favorite and colorful Dutch artists: Arp Frique. Arp Frique is known for his multicultural take on music, combining Caribbean and Cabo Verdean styles with classic disco and funk. He decided to write a whole new song around the vocals of the Swindle and Tom Misch hit "Yes, No, Maybe." He takes a loose-limbed, tropical disco direction where the live, analog recording lays a perfect foundation for this breezy track.

Dam Swindle are back on Heist Recordings and coming in hot with a series of three releases in 2022 to celebrate a decade of Dam Swindle. The aptly titled Keep On Swindling EPs form a collection of classic DS tracks that have been re-engineered and remixed as well as new material from the Dutch duo. The first EP features two new originals, a stellar rework of "The Break Up" by rising UK jazz star Emma-Jean Thackray and a 2022 mix of their 2014 hit: "64 Ways" featuring Mayer Hawthorne. The EP kicks off with "Body Control": A fresh DS production that has all the elements in there to become their next club hit. A tight garage groove smothered in congas forms the basis for this track along with its deep repetitive bassline. It's the musical elements that make this track really stand out though. There's swinging offbeat synth hits, sample chops, lush pads and vibrant arpeggios building momentum for dancers to lose their shit (or their body control) to, every time this track is played. "The Break Up" -- originally part of the first release on Heist back in 2013 -- has only been remixed once in that same year by Max Graef. The track now gets a full makeover courtesy of the amazingly talented Emma-Jean Thackray, who has been playing the original in her sets for since day one. Her version is loaded with newly recorded parts -- vocals and horns included - and gives the original an amazing live jazz twist. On the flip, the duo offers a 2022 mix of their track "64 Ways" featuring Mayer Hawthorne. "64 Ways" was originally released as part of their album Boxed Out in 2014 (DIRT 006CD/LP) and was their first venture into vocal collaborations. None other than Mayer Hawthorne -- a serious house-head himself -- came over to Amsterdam to record the track and it was an instant hit. Now, with some new engineering done, the guys have dusted off their old project to great effect. The 2022 mix makes this track sound warm, powerful and well rounded, giving new life to this DS classic. The final track of the EP is "All I Want"; the second production on this record that sees Dam Swindle deliver a track that has "summer festival" written all over it; synth stabs, diva vocals, acid lines and a huge breakdown included.

Detroit Swindle is back on Heist Recordings. They come in with full force, delivering a set of Swindle-styled house tracks, accompanied by a jazzy remix by Volcov in his Isoul8 moniker with guest appearances by Kaidi Tatham on keys and Nigel Bennett on vocals. The EP kicks off with "The Life Behind Things"; a life affirming soulful house tune that's cleverly built around a set of switching organ stabs. The energy in this track keeps on building with the filter slowly opening up while live percussion oozes its way through the track (courtesy of Mauskovic Dance Band member, Chris Bruining). After a well working surprise acid break, the track breaks down into a jazzy organ solo by Byron the Aquarius, building up momentum till the full track comes back in for an ecstatic delivery of feel-good dancefloor emotions. The second original of this EP is Detroit Swindle's view on what a party-starting piano house track should sound like with "Music For Clubs". This track is all about rolling drums, lush piano stabs and possibly the funkiest baseline in four-to-the-floor house music. The latter two are made possible by the quick finger work of their live show collaborator and close friend Lorenz Rhode. The full B side goes to Volcov's remix of "The Life Behind Things". He takes his inspiration from the energy of the original and chooses to set a steady groove where the lush key work of Kaidi Tatham shines both on the chords and a muscle-flexing organ solo. The vocal sample from the original is accompanied by some great ad-libs by Nigel Bennett. With these elements working together in perfect harmony, you can practically feel the good vibes these three friends had when recording the remix. It's been on our to-do list for a while to record a full-on house record.

2024 repress. After Detroit Swindle's sophomore album High Life (HEIST 001CD/LP, 2018), Heist Recordings serve up a tasty selection of remixes. Steve Rachmad comes up with a re-interpretation of "Yes, No, Maybe (feat. Tom Misch)", an uplifting modern boogie version of the already funky original. Cinthie takes the high-energy, Afro-funk track "Call Of The Wild (feat. Jungle by Night)" and turns it into a full-on house frenzy. Jura Soundsystem choses to remix "High Life (feat. Lorenz Rhode)", a tamed down, dreamy dub. Matt Karmil provides a moody deep house remix of one of the album's beatless tracks, "Ketama Gold".

Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Detroit Swindle present High Life, their second studio album on the duo's own Heist Recordings. The heart of the album was recorded over a three-week period at their Amsterdam studio in March 2017, and the release will coincide with the fifth anniversary of the label. Since forming in 2011, the Dutch duo have carved a unique place for themselves in the scene. Their sound -- which merges references from multiple decades into one smooth aesthetic -- quickly rose to popularity for its careful blend of soul and rhythm, taking cues from their passion for obscure records, with influences ranging from house and funk to Afrobeat and soul. Dynamic live shows and DJ sets afford them a packed touring schedule across the globe, whilst their label Heist Recordings is credited with consistently breaking new artists. High Life explores the intersection of live and electronic music, with much of the improvised material left largely untouched to maintain its organic sensibilities. Detroit Swindle describe the album as an "electronic album with a live approach, combining our love for house, ambient and jazzy harmonics, making it a record interesting for the club, as well as a pleasant album to put on at home." High Life explores stripped back soul and groove driven house over ten glistening productions. Featured on the album are a sun-drenched collaboration with British singer/songwriter Tom Misch and a deep workout with the vocals of trained gospel singer turned house aficionado Seven Davis Jr. on "Flavourism" and Lorenz Rhode who accompanies the duo for their live shows, features on the infectious melodies of "High Life". "Call Of The Wild" incorporates none other than Dutch nine-piece brass band Jungle By Night.

2018 marks Heist Recordings' first step into album territory, releasing the sophomore album High Life from Detroit Swindle (HEIST 001CD/LP). This single features the album cut "Flavourism" with vocals from Seven Davis Jr. Here, the single is presented with remixes by the amazing Pépé Bradock and Boston-to-NYC house duo John Barera & Will Martin. "Flavourism" is as much a throwback track to classic Detroit Swindle territory, as it is a look into their contemporary view on soulful deep house. The vibe is set by Seven Davis Jr.'s distinctive vocals, accompanied by warm "side-chained" pads and a rubbery live synth-bassline.

Label heads Detroit Swindle deliver their fourth solo release for the label. The title track is mad of warm subs, galloping hi-hats, and an exotic synth loop that'll get stuck in your head for hours and hours. "Just Not Norma" goes on in a similar manner, built around a few simple keys, with the lovely work of Mark De Clive-Lowe. "Tamarindus Hollandicus" evolves around a bell-like percussion loop and a roaring Moog bass. Willie Burns gets all dark and trippy on his excursion into electro territory. Machinegun-like claps and haunting strings accompany the breakbeat-not-breakbeat and ruthless bassline.

Detroit Swindle return home to their own Heist Recordings to releases The Circular City EP, a jubilant record melding the most groove-laden strands of disco, funk, soul and house. To top it all off, Matthew Herbert provides a remix. The Circular City EP brings together tracks for varying dancefloor moments and comes rounded off with a typically inventive remix from one of house music's most extolled veterans. 2016 repress. Detroit Swindle follow up their 2014 album Boxed Out (DIRT 006CD/LP). "Allright (We'll Be)" is an up-tempo affair at 128 BPM, with an irresistibly sexy hook. "Pursuit" has that classic Detroit Swindle vibe with an almost acidy synth rolling on in the background, giving the track the core of its energy. "Heads Down" is the deepest of the three, with a particularly shuffling set of offbeat toms creating the groove alongside a set of warm synths. Minimalistic design by Amsterdam-based artist Baster. Dirt Crew presents more of Detroit Swindle's Boxed Out (DIRT 006CD/LP) goodness. The boys have selected some of their fave producers to lay their hands on four originals from the album. First up is Jamie Odell, who delivers a deep reinterpretation of "B.Y.O." under his Jimpster moniker. This is followed by MRSK, who boosts the banging "He's Just This Guy, You Know?" to even higher levels with a raw disco and funk infusion. Cuthead drops his great skills on the smooth "Me, Myself & You," followed in closing with Karizma aka Kaytronik, whose take on the album hip-hop jam "For the Love Of..." is something special.

Double LP version. Housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve and pressed on white vinyl. Dirt Crew presents a the debut album from Detroit Swindle aka Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets. Their tremendous rise in the house scene was noted in DJ Mag's "Making a splash in 2013" section and from there it just went off. They have been laying it down across the UK, Ireland and the European mainland every weekend for the past two years, gaining much respect with both their DJ and Live sets. 2014 is going to be even busier, with tours planned in the USA, Australia, Asia and South Africa, where they have an exceptionally large fan base. After some very successful EPs on Freerange, Tsuba, their own label Heist and of course Dirt Crew Recordings, plus numerous remixes on labels like Greco Roman, Club Mod, Jalapeno and Room With A View, Dirt Crew felt that now is the time for the Detroit Swindle debut album. So here it is: a 13-track symphony of DS flavors. It has everything you would expect from the Swindles, some slow-burners with a hint of disco, some deep house, some banging club monsters and hey, even some leftfield hip-hop jams. The album opens with "B.Y.O.," a track that balances nicely between the DS shuffle and an old school New York-style block party. The track is a taste of things to come for the rest of the album, hinting towards a big party vibe, but mellow enough to make it a really interesting listen. The one thing Detroit Swindle are known for best is their knack for picking the right vocals. For Boxed Out, they came up with some perfect partnerships. They recorded "64 Ways" with none other than one of America's finest soul singers: Mayer Hawthorne. The track has a lazy shuffle, a bunch of catchy Rhodes chords and a few well-placed layers of synths that give this track a hint of "Detroit Experiment," wrapped up in an almost poppy house jam. One of the other vocal tracks is "Thoughts of She," that effortlessly samples the voice of UK soul singer Alice Russell from the track "Pushing On" by The Quantic Soul Orchestra. There's also the gorgeous track "Center of Gravity" that has Berlin-based, Ghanese-Canadian soul singer Sandra Amarie on vocals. It's particularly this track that reflects the true spirit of Detroit Swindle's music, a mixture of soul and UK garage meets Detroit house slowed down to a sexy groove with some of their trademark pads and stabs. They pushed themselves to explore different tempos as well, which not only resulted in some slow house burners, but also in two hip-hop tracks. "For the Love of..." is a homage to the old school sounds of J. Dilla, A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde, combining off-beat shuffles, a gritty bass line and a warm cut-up soul sample. "You, Me, Here, Now" is almost a love song, disguised in a s(w)ing-a-long downtempo type of track. "Huh, What!," "Shotgun," "The Fat Rat" and "He's Just This Guy, You Know?" are all relentless dancefloor monsters, pushing the tempo to match old school Chicago and New York house cuts from the late '80s and early '90s. The album has a little bit of everything in exactly the right dose, making it both a good listen, and an extremely infectious club album.

DIRT 076EP
|
This is the first EP taken from Detroit Swindle's upcoming debut album Boxed Out (DIRT 006CD/LP). First up is the title-track, a true Detroit Swindle banger that takes us back to pumping Chicago old school house times. Leon Vynehall and A1 Bassline as Laszlo Dancehall rip the track to shreds, resulting in a dark, pounding, straight up jackin' techno groove. "The Fat Rat" is a groovy, percussive, soulful, and stabby house excursion. "Monkey Wrench" has a slow groove, the warm sound of the Rhodes, and an Arp-y bass.

HEIST 001EP
|
2022 repress. This is the very first release from Heist Recordings from 2013. "The Break Up" features an infectious set of airy chords, a bumpy bass-line and a lush female vocal. "The Make Up" is a deeper track, but still a genuine house tune, with some repetitive, almost hypnotic vocals and stabs, and of course, a pumping groove. You'll lose track of everything halfway through the break, but as soon as the beat kicks in, you know its business time.

DIRT 067EP
|
Detroit Swindle are back on Dirt Crew, and you can expect the same stab-driven deep, bassy house joints they are known for. With their Creep EP on Jimpster's brilliant Freerange label, they cemented their place in the house music scene in 2012 for sure. Here you will find three new original cutz and a contribution by Leftside Wobble, who remixed the title-track. As a bonus is their biggest track to date "Jick Rames," that was released digitally in 2012.
