Greek-born, Krakow-based DEAS is a producer of unusual stylistic and emotional breadth, possibly the result of growing up with a range of cultural and geographical influences. His fourth EP on Second State Audio continues his impressive run, a mosaic of moods and textures that coalesces into a cohesive, compelling whole. "Space Race" brings a futuristic cosmos to mind, a track that's at once urgent and foreboding, yet light on its feet. Arpeggiating laser synths glide over peppy drum patterns in a manner that encourages dancefloor mayhem. "Apart" is a little more sinister but still highly danceable, with a propulsive bassline, noodling lashes of acid and an almost psychedelic vibe. "Index" strips it back and places the drums front-and-center in a less-is-more piece designed to keep the party chugging, while "DRMS", another percussion-based track, adds trippy effects to enhance those slightly sideways moments. "Radiation", meanwhile, is a journey in the true sense of the word, a track that morphs from atmospheric to tense and back again in an arrangement that's uncluttered, yet highly effective at creating a sense of delicious unease. This EP is another collection of weapons from an internationally acclaimed techno producer and DJ.

DEAS comes back to Second State Audio with Red Source EP. He delivers four dancefloor burners of high-pace, abrasive, yet euphoric techno. Diving in head first, "Red Source" has the "pedal to the metal" where brisk percussion lays the ground work for sonic bleeps and eerie vocals reminiscent of an excursion into deep space travel. "Face To Face" follows suit with the same approach and concept yet relies more heavily on the drums to do the heavy lifting. DEAS takes his sound palette and switches out the programming of expected sounds creating a surprisingly cool cut with "Second Signal".

Deas is the new moniker of London-based guitarist Cameron Deas, and String Studies, his first LP of all electronic-based material, is unlike anything else he's released. Recorded at home between February and March of 2014, the 8 pieces on this LP were recorded live with very few overdubs, with Deas's 12-string acoustic guitar used as a sampling source to trigger and in turn be manipulated by a modular system. The immaculate production and scalpel-sharp twists and turns found within the music display a remarkable level of confidence and intuition in Deas's new process, which makes it difficult to believe that this is his first documented work within the electronic medium. Mastered by John Hannon at No Recording Studio.
