"Inasmuch as scores by Gerald Eckert seem to the observer to be full of filigree and aesthetically balanced, this is tempered by a decisive - nay pedantic - sense of demand placed on the interpreter to produce the greatest possible array of timbral values and dynamic range, ones that encroach on the border of what is performable in terms of technical ability but which remain nevertheless binding, obligatory in point of fact. Gestures and the most exacting performance directions are addressed in this way, and just wait to be turned into sound and thus imbued with life. The piece 'Vom Innen - Körnung' for viola solo is a case in point. From its very outset, 'airless' scales marked quadruple or quintuple piano occur, serving to generate from a single note an entire overtone spectrum. And because they fold back into each other, a monochrome sonic surface is created. Within this constant state of flux, trills sustain the innermost pulsations. As in 'NEN VII' for flute, violoncello and tape, or in 'Schächte - les nuages d'automne' for flute, viola and harp, there is a perceptible dying away of sound in phonation of the opening sounds themselves; a permanent sense of altered perspectives may be felt.
