OSTGUT 074EP
|
For the Fokus (OSTGUT 013LP) remix EP, Dave Clarke, Aubrey, The Exaltics, and The Traveller were invited to place their focus on some chosen tracks. Dave Clarke remixes "Sky Pushing," emphasizing deep distortion and gentle chaos. The break techno of The Exaltics is whipped up with nervous bass and smoky drums, on their version of "Mayria." Aubrey redefines "Trespass," combining unpredictable use of hi-hats and synths from the original with a dark and classic pumping beat and inspired flanger effects. The final remix by The Traveller lures you in with a soft intro but soon develops into an old school techno stomper.

2x12" version. Having already demonstrated his talents at producing bold, gyrating and atmospheric techno through his numerous 12''s on Ostgut Ton, and after offering a window into his DJ mind with the versatile and highly musical Berghain 05 (OSTGUT 019CD) mix CD, Marcel Fengler now approaches the album format, exploring his take on electronic music from yet another angle. Over 11 varied and detailed tracks, his debut album Fokus is the product of an intensive three months in his Berlin studio, where Fengler developed a sonic concept for an album which expanded his love for outlandish electronics, abstract melody, abrasive textures and dub-wise bass frequencies, all carefully siphoned into a very concentrated end result. From the engulfing spaces found in the opening moments of "Mayria," sweeping layers of synthesis, mysterious sung elements and encircling layers of kinetic energy build. Marcel introduces us to the sound aesthetic of Fokus - grating, broken beats are rough yet controlled, detailed hyper-tonal elements swarm and pan, micro details swimming beneath the surface. Sonically confronting, standing out from any conventional palette of sounds, early tracks like "The Stampede" and "Trespass" offer alternative answers to today's club tasks. Maintaining the confident mixture between 4/4 movement and more experimental musical elements and motifs, the melancholic "Jaz" juggles its way across the spectrum, while "King of Psi" unleashes more of Fengler's trademark texture as static beats are set within a twinkling synthscape. Exploring yet more sound sources, discordant bells chime as a rasping percussion set kicks "Sky Pushing" into its introverted, paranoid zones. Moving into avant-garde circles, the beautiful "High Falls" filters and shimmers in a reduced intermission. The frenetic synth drums and wonderful sequencer madness of "Dejavu" describe another of the album's strong points perfectly; Fokus speaks volumes as something so diverse, yet with such a clear and concentrated production. "Liquid Torso" is the album's epilogue; a scientific, extended tribute to the Bleep. With Fokus, Marcel Fengler extracts himself far from the boundaries of a conventional DJ/producer debut album, achieving a very varied, controlled and musical album that is clearly concerned with satisfying a bright, burning need to express himself through electronic music in fresh and challenging ways.

OSTGUT 060EP

Marcel Fengler finally returns with a solo EP for Ostgut Ton. Consistently providing quality over quantity, this long-awaited 12" surprises yet again as Fengler develops his funkier side further. "Frantic" immediately brings the essence of peak-time energy. Bathing in melodic synth stabs, it mixes with wide open fields of euphoria. "6 in a Row" tries to deceive with a simple and mellow arrangement but grabs the listener from behind with its cleverly-built architecture. On "Mosaique" he ventures further into spaced-out dub structures and melodies.

This is the fifth volume in Ostgut's Berghain series, mixed by Marcel Fengler. With the focus on more current developments in more edgy techno and house, combined with a hearty nod to the past, the Berghain mix continues with newcomers like Puresque showing promise, alongside a weighty new Ben Sims track, and the pounding filtered glory of Vril's "UV" -- another exclusive for the mix. Marcel includes a new track that heads straight for the floor with "Sphinx," while Skudge put forward "Man On Wire." The slow burning house of Reagenz's "The Labyrinth" leads us into a psychedelic game of funk, dub and abstraction as the mix winds down. Before drawing to a close with Convextion aka E.R.P's stunning "Vapor Pressure," we're treated to a UK house classic by 20:20 Vision's "Future Remembrance (Livestyle Mix)," in all its analog glory. On Berghain 05, Marcel Fengler has proved filling floors doesn't have to be about ticking boxes. This mix is a perfect example of the type of dexterity, sensitivity and scope he possesses as a DJ. Other artists include: Emika, Marcel Dettmann, Peter Van Hoesen, Terrence Dixon, Octagen, Byetone, Dr. Walker, Tommy Four Seven, Regis, Secret Cinema, Minneapolis, Ratio, Gerd, Duplex, Seiji, Claude Young & Takasi Nakajima and Ben Sims.

Berghain resident Marcel Fengler is one of the frontmen of raw and forward-pushing techno. This 12" is comprised of three jacking, factory-forged tracks, leading us further down his mysterious path. Like a hot-headed live jam in a humid Chicago basement, "Rapture" gathers up all the energy of classic house, infuses it with a no-nonsense progression and then throws it into the deep end. "RazKaz" jumps off the platter with nervous intensity as a warbling synthscape massages itself into your consciousness.

This is Marcel Fengler's third 12" -- quality over quantity. The title track infuses a dirty Chicago sound with a house swing and a dry sense of humor. "Gridlock" has already earned the label "Berghain-approved" -- a heavy, atmospheric track that builds dense tension. "Chi Twine" experiments with broken rhythms and the artist's hip-hop past by fusing electro beats with techno qualities, making for an atmospheric, sci-fi track for the wee hours.

Marcel Fengler displays two different sides to his abilities with one primetime techno banger and one more experimental cut with a strong dubstep influence. "Friction" is meant for a big techno dancefloor -- it is a self-assured DJ tool that keeps a perfect balance between deepness and peak-time energy. "Yaki" is his first track ever that features a broken beat. Accompanied by noisy fragments and dark, industrial synth stabs, this track remains deeply rooted in the Berghain sound.

Marcel Fengler is a resident DJ at Berghain, and Playground/Early Glow can be looked at as the result of a two-year testing phase of sonic possibilities available to him. "Playground" is peak-time techno with a metallic scraping noise, refined percussion and a huge kick. "Early Glow" is meant to be played in the early morning hours, as a carpet of fragmented chords with pads rush in and out, developing the sort of rhythmic hypnosis which Berlin crowds have learned to love so much. These tracks are classic Morse codes from the depths of club space.
