LP version. Only nine months after Hedvig Mollestad momentous debut solo album Ekhidna (RCD 2215CD/RLP 3215LP), the guitarist is back fronting her trio. With their previous album, Smells Funny (RCD 2203CD/RLP 3203LP, 2019), this explosive and expansive trio experienced a breakthrough of sorts, having gone from strength to strength through five albums since their 2011 debut Shoot! (RCD 2115CD/RLP 3115LP, 2011), gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps, sharing big stages with the likes of John McLaughlin and Black Sabbath, and being equally comfortable on jazz and rock stages. Hedvig enforced this breakthrough with Ekhidna, appearing on both jazz and rock best of 2020 lists, like coming in third in Prog's "Album of the Year" poll. With the hypnotic title track, the spacious ballad "Four Candles" and generally a more varied mood, Ding Dong. You're Dead. is the trio's most dynamic album to date. That said there's still enough solid and creative riffing here to satisfy the headbangers, as well as the jazzheads, as they further explore the free and open landscapes most notably started with their Black Stabat Mater album (RCD 2183CD/RLP 3183LP, 2016) and continued with Smells Funny. As Nate Chinen wrote about Black Stabat Mater in JazzTimes: "Her trio, which has Ellen Brekken on bass and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad on drums, caught my ear then with its audacious style references: the loose swagger of early Black Sabbath; the density and prowl of peak Led Zeppelin; the expeditionary urge of Jimi Hendrix; the incantatory fervor of John McLaughlin." This trio radiates confidence and have become a surefire hit on the Norwegian live scene. And while we rightly praise Hedvig's exceptional abilities, let's not forget how important the rhythm section is to make it all work so well. Ellen Brekken is an accomplished bassist, driving the band just as hard on the electric bass as on the acoustic. Then there's Ivar Loe Bjørnstad, not your regular rock drummer, not your regular jazz drummer, but in possession of the loose swagger mentioned above.

With Smells Funny being their sixth album in seven years, the explosive and expansive Hedvig Mollestad Trio have gone from strength to strength, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps, sharing big stages with the likes of John McLaughlin and Black Sabbath, and being equally comfortable in jazz and rock clubs. Smells Funny sees Mollestad truly coming into her own as an amazing lead guitarist as well as a dependable riffmeister. Hedvig first picked up her mother's nylon-strung acoustic guitar at ten, before discovering a whole new world through her father's jazz and rock record collection as a teenager. She translated a biography of Jimi Hendrix for a school project and was given her first electric guitar and amplifier as a confirmation present. The members of the trio are from the districts, but Hedvig met Ellen Brekken and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad at the Music Academy in Oslo. Hedvig asked them to join her after she received the Jazz Talent Of The Year Award at Molde International Jazzfestival in 2009. They have stayed together since, and all previous albums have been released on Rune Grammofon; Shoot! (RCD 2115CD/RLP 3115LP, 2011), All Of Them Witches (RCD 2141CD/RLP 3141LP 2013), Enfant Terrible (RCD 2157CD/ RLP 3157LP, 2014), Black Stabat Mater (RCD 2183CD/RLP 3183LP, 2016) and Evil In Oslo (RLP 2184LP, 2016), all to wide international acclaim.

Hedvig Mollestad Trio present Black Stabat Mater. With three albums under their belts in less than five years this explosive trio have gone from strength to strength gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps and receiving vivid praise from the likes of Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke and veteran writer Richard Williams, who started his report from the Berlin Jazz Festival with "a late-night gig last week persuaded me that Hedvig Mollestad Trio have found a way to make head banging feel good". Although there is enough riffing here to satisfy the head-bangers, with Black Stabat Mater the trio are venturing into more free and open landscapes, Mollestad truly comes into her own as a solo guitarist as well as a riff-meister previously compared to the likes of Tony Iommi and Jimmy Page. It´s also notable that extensive touring has given them a confidence boost, and once again the tracks have been laid down live in the studio with only minor overdubs. The last few years have seen a thrilling new progressive wave of Norwegian "avant jazz'n'rock" or free metal energy combos like label mates Elephant9, Grand General, Bushman´s Revenge and Krokofant, and not to forget the mighty Scorch Trio - led by Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim - who can be said to have started it all some 15 years ago. But it could very well be Hedvig Mollestad Trio that defines it all with their ability to turn the full force of heavy rock and electric jazz to demonic purposes. Hedvig first picked up her mother´s nylon-strung acoustic guitar at ten, before discovering a whole new world through her father´s jazz and rock record collection as a teenager. Why was David Fricke, Senior Editor at Rolling Stone, seen wearing a huge grin on his face at 2014's SXSW festival in Austin, Texas? Well, he happened to be digging the pummeling, ecstatic vision of Norway's Hedvig Mollestad Trio at the time. Double-tracked with a ghostly haze of background fuzz, Hedvig's lightning-rod guitar blazes a trail that comes in the wake of the heaviest guitar giants -- there's Hendrix, Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and Led Zep's Jimmy Page swirling around the cauldron, but also the exploratory, disciplined free-play of Pete Cosey, John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana buzzing out of her fingertips. Born in the Norwegian town of Ålesund in the early '80s, Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen has been steeped in the guitar since fooling around with her mother's nylon-string acoustic at the age of 10. Together with drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad and bassist Ellen Brekken, and recording with an 8-track tape machine, her Trio turn the full force of heavy rock and electric jazz to demonic purposes. It can be sledgehammer sludge, stoned to a crawl as on "Arigato, Bitch." Or it's nimble as a phantom on "Rastapopoulos," a dizzying churn that's named after the archvillain of Hergé's Tintin cartoons. And for the Mollestad Trio at its intuitive, ESP-connected finest, check "Liquid Bridges." "Laughing John" gestures towards the great Mahavishnu Orchestra guitarist as well as a music teacher, named Jon, who heavily influenced Hedvig's development. The album's fine balance between looseness and control follows a year of world touring, and tracks reflect such odd venues as "La Boule Noire," a former Portuguese disco in Paris whose walls are studded with bullets from a gangland shootout. Enfant Terrible follows the Trio's previous Rune Grammofon releases, the Spellemann (Norwegian Grammy) nominated All of Them Witches (RCD 2141CD/ RLP 3141LP) and Shoot! (RCD 2115CD/ RLP 3115LP) and, like label-mates Bushman's Revenge, Elephant9 and Grand General, represent a thrilling new progressive wave of Norwegian avant-rock/free-metal energy. Don't be fooled by the deceptively innocent portrait of Hedvig herself on the front cover -- a rare example of designer Kim Hiorthøy working with classic black and white photography, and an unusual departure from Rune Grammofon's familiar digipacks. Enfants terribles are a disturbance of the peace. But the regular enfants terribles make changes, they are creative, they force you to think differently. This Enfant Terrible is one of those.

Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen is a guitar heroine for our times. Her molten, overdriven guitar sound is forged in the same fiery furnace as Hendrix, Tony Iommi, and Jimmy Page, then plunged into a steaming vat of free jazz in the Sonny Sharrock/Fred Frith mould. On tracks like "The Rex" and "Lake Acid," you'll hear the megalithic riffology of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and "Rock 'N' Roll," but with an agility and intensity peculiar to the dark Northern regions where she and her bandmates were raised. Her drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad grew up in a Norwegian hillbilly town where the kids taste moonshine before they've started school. And bassist Ellen Brekken was raised on a farm and is extremely fascinated by trains -- which, given her impeccable timekeeping, seems highly appropriate. All of Them Witches follows the Trio's previous Rune Grammofon release, Shoot! (RCD 2115CD/ RLP 3115LP) and, like label-mates Elephant9 and Grand General, represent a thrilling new progressive wave of Norwegian avant-rock/free-metal energy. This latest batch of electrifying instrumentals was recorded live in the island environment of Ocean Sound studio, a grass-roofed wooden barn on the edge of the Norwegian Sea fitted with state-of-the-art equipment. "Sing, Goddess" takes its name from the opening line of Homer's Iliad. Inspired by the wide-open skies, "Shawshank" and "Ghrá Rúnda" are more reflective pieces, bathed in controlled feedback. Witches have historically been victims of persecution, but as Hedvig reminds us, black magicians can also hold the reins of power. Prepare to be spellbound.

Rune Grammofon are very excited to present a young trio of gifted Norwegian musicians with one foot in heavy rock and one in jazz. Hedvig, Ellen and Ivar are all from the districts but met at the music academy in Oslo. Hedvig asked them to join her after receiving the Jazz Talent of the Year award at Molde International Jazzfestival in 2009. Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen (guitar) was born in Ålesund and grew up in a musical family where both jazz and rock played a part in her life. She states Nirvana, Melvins, Jimi Hendrix, Motorpsycho and Miles Davis as important musicians, while jazz guitarist Jon Eberson and Snah (Motorpsycho) is mentioned as guitarists she has listened to with special attention. Hedvig also plays with Jon Eberson as well as with Norwegian chart-topping pop/funk sensation Jarle Bernhoft and Hilde Marie Kjersem. Ellen Brekken (electric and acoustic bass) is from Tynset, her musical journey taking her from a pop background towards a more jazzy territory. Her teacher and mentor is bassist Bjørn Kjellemyr, most known for his long co-operation with guitarist Terje Rypdal. Rypdal is also sited as a major influence by Ellen. She is involved in several projects and has previously played with former Svein Finnerud Trio's drummer Espen Rud, Bugge Wesseltoft and Nana Vasconcelos. Ivar Loe Bjørnstad (drums) is from Surnadal and studied jazz at the Music Academy in Oslo with Bushman's Revenge guitarist Even Hermansen. His musical background is rock in the form of grunge and metal but he also mentions guitarist Bill Frisell as a major influence together with major Norwegian drummers Audun Kleive and Per Oddvar Johansen. He has played with Bjørn Kjellemyr, Jon Eberson, Karl Seglem, Hilde Marie Kjersem, Ken Stringfellow and many more. Their debut album Shoot! was recorded live in the studio with just a couple of minor overdubs. It was mixed by Kai Andersen in Athletic Sound and mastered at Dave Collins Mastering in Los Angeles. Fully instrumental apart from the shouts in Melvins' "Blood Witch," Shoot! is more song-structured in nature than other guitar-led trios such as Bushman's Revenge and Scorch Trio.
