Wanda Jackson is a true pioneer of American popular music. One of the first women in history to record country and western music, as well as rock n' roll, and a brief romantic liaison with Elvis. This collection reminds of the greatness of her peak years at Capitol Records. From the mournful twists of "Sinful Heart," to the hard-rocking thrills of "Let's Have A Party" and "Riot In Cell Block Number Nine," Wanda Jackson attacks the material in her distinctive way, with a wry glance at innocence left somewhere behind. Clear vinyl; numbered.

"Wanda Jackson started her career in country music before embracing rock 'n' roll. While remaining true to her roots, the transition proved so successful she was affectionately crowned 'The Queen of Rockabilly'. Possessing a voice that demanded to be heard in a world dominated by male rockers, she blazed a trail for all that followed. Pressed on 140g black vinyl, this 17-track LP comprises some of her best singles from 1954-62. The first track is from her time with Decca, but the other tracks are from her time with Capitol from 1956-62. Features rollicking numbers such 'Mean Mean Man,' 'Fujiyama Mama,' 'Honey Bop,' 'Riot In Cell Block #9,' 'Let's Have A Party' and heartbreakers like 'Right Or Wrong,' 'I'd Be Ashamed' and 'A Little Bitty Tear.' An entertaining showcase for a highly distinctive talent, dubbed 'the sweet lady with the nasty voice.'"

"On the occasion of her 85th birthday on October 20, 2022, Bear Family Records honors Wanda Jackson, the Queen of Rockabilly with a fine 10" vinyl LP. A round a dozen of unique Rockabilly classics fill the grooves of this high-quality record in a limited edition. In addition to '(Let's Have A) Party', tracks include 'Baby Loves Him', 'Mean Mean Man', 'Cool Love' and 'Savin' My Love' and her re-makes of 'Fujiyama Mama' and 'Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad'. Liner notes by Bill Dahl. What a party! All hail the rockabilly queen! Wanda Jackson staked her royal reputation as an unbridled rocker on the killer sides she waxed for Capitol Records during the second half of the 1950s. A dozen of those classics constitute this Bear Family Records 10" LP, every one permeated with the sexy swagger and sensual sway that became her trademark after Elvis helped convince her to switch her stylistic focus from country to rock and roll. Wanda set her own 'Baby Loves Him', 'Mean Mean Man', 'Cool Love', and 'Savin' My Love' afire, made the swinging oldies 'Fujiyama Mama' and 'Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad' her own, and transformed the rip-roaring '(Let's Have A) Party' into a national hit (even Elvis and The Collins Kids couldn't do that). Wanda's studio bands included guitar demigods Joe Maphis and Roy Clark as well as her own touring combo, The Poe Kats featuring piano pounder 'Big' Al Downing. Jackson's rip-roaring rockabilly side is on full glorious display on these 12 classic tracks. Talk about a party!"

Fryers presents two of their favorite sides from "Queen of Rockabilly" Wanda Lavonne Jackson. "Funnel of Love," her ever-popular 1961 rock 'n' roll standard was recorded back in 1961 and covered by every half-decent rockabilly-influenced band ever since. "Whirlpool" has been getting recent spins on the European R&B and soul scene. As always, great care has been taken to make this the best-sounding press of these two tracks. Mastered in Finland where Timmion Cutting Laboratory cut loud, deep, and wide.

"The first female singer of the early rock and roll era, Wanda was encouraged to try rock and roll by Elvis Presley himself. It was 1955 when Wanda met Elvis during the 'Ozark Jubilee,' a country tour through the south. She didn't think she had the voice for it, but he disagreed. He even recommended some songs for her. At first she was reluctant, but she signed a recording contract with Capitol and decided to give it a try. During the next few years, Wanda produced numerous examples of raw, prototypical rock & roll. The most distinctive aspect was her voice. She developed a wild, growling sound that at times sounds possessed or strangely alien, capable of going from sweet innocence to hellcat at the push of a button. Originally released in 1959 during the 'Queen of Rockabilly's' prime at Capitol Records, There's A Party Goin' On features a solid collection of songs in tune with the title track as well as covers of a handful of early rock hits such as 'Tweedlee Dee' and 'Kansas City.' The set is highlighted by the staggering guitar playing of Roy Clark as exemplified on the standout cut 'Hard Headed Woman.'"
