CADENZA 095EP
|
Valentino Kanzyani has been producing spellbinding electronic dance for well over a decade, but it's perhaps on PsiAmsterdam that the Slovenian DJ and producer has created some of most his hallucinatory and psychedelic work to date. "PsiAmsterdam" is a subtle and sedate piece, with Valentino's reliable beats underpinning an ever-evolving synth ARP. The sound design evokes shades of the early electronic and ambient classics, such as Future Sound Of London, its haunting synths melting over the beat. "8.Agosto" continues this theme with some well thought-out ambience and piano work weaving its way around solid drums, keeping a timeless appeal by not resorting to current trends or gimmicks.

Slovenia-born Valentino Kanzyani has been one of Cadenza's secret weapons over the last 12 months, already building a solid profile with the first two installments of his Love & Gratitude series. And now he delivers the third, and final, part of this musical trilogy, with a continuous mixed CD by Valentino himself, featuring almost all of the compositions released in the series. For the uninitiated, it's a perfect album mix that encapsulates Valentino's deep and seductive sounds. Highights include "Viole(n)t Thoughts," a sultry and smooth workout, its light percussion providing the melody, and a groove that is so intoxicating, its 14-minute tenure really hypnotizes. "Automatique" is a track that comes with cinematic string sweeps and deft keys that shape the deep house rhythm, its filtered hats forever propelling things forward. "Chord Release" continues to define Kanzyani's sound, a minimal and dark palette onto which sub-tropical effects and precision hits and claps are layered, but never over cooking the recipe, just on-point and effective dance rhythms. Finally, there's "Nesimtitule," its disjointed arrangement providing the space for the vocal hits and wandering bass, and an elegant string breakdown, again lending filmic qualities to his music that have been so prevalent in the Love & Gratitude series.

The second of this two part underground house series is more heady and hypnotic than the first one. "Mirvan" has a tension and heaviness similar to the raw rhythms of Berghain residents like Ben Klock or Marcel Dettmann. "Chanta Lopez" is more housey, with a tangible bassline and more swing in the groove.

Slovenian techno protagonist Valentino Kanzyani shares his underground house vision on his debut release for Cadenza. From techno releases on labels like Tronic and Intec, to collaborations with Masomenos and progressive hits on Yoshitoshi, Kanzyani is a true beat scientist. As this EP shows, Kanzyani is an astute creator of grooves that have deep percussive roots and an unconventional raw energy.
