Known for his ability to create captivating, emotionally charged techno, Jonathan Kaspar returns to Cocoon Recordings with his third contribution Twofold. One, yet simultaneously two releases that once again showcase his extraordinary talent through condensed techno with a pinch of trance, weaving together driving rhythms and atmospheric textures in a way that feels innovatively progressive. Twofold: Fade -- Rooted in a minimalist rhythmic structure, "Power" takes listeners in a new direction, steadily building momentum as its energy billows upwards, with the intensity never wavering throughout. A large, dented, tinny tuba sounds imposingly as Jonathan blows louder and louder into the old thing, its raw, metallic tone instantly commanding attention. What an explosion in the break, leading listeners into a wild, almost chaotic energy, before Kaspar's meticulous attention to detail ensures that the shimmering synths feel perfectly placed, guiding to the absolute freak-out moment. After all the insanity, Jonathan Kaspar leads into a melodic, trancy after-hours mood with "1993," bringing a sense of release after the wild ride of the previous tracks. What a successful closing track to this outstanding release. With its melodic trance influences, it offers a soothing, almost nostalgic atmosphere, bringing a sense of calm and closure, a perfect moment of introspection and euphoria as the EP winds down.

One, yet simultaneously two releases that once again showcase his extraordinary talent through condensed techno with a pinch of trance, weaving together driving rhythms and atmospheric textures in a way that feels innovatively progressive. Twofold: Ignite -- Drifting hypnotically, this might be the most fitting way to describe what Jonathan Kaspar unfolds here. The rolling percussion grooves seamlessly intertwine with the siren's spectral tone, gradually blending into the alchemy of "Yah" as it erupts into the mix. By the time the peak arrives, there's a raw intensity in the air -- the track seems to bend and stretch then drills and twists until it cracks, but never loses its sense of purpose and remains anchored in its deep, pulsating groove. On the flip side, "Silver Lines" stands as a counterpart, offering a contrast in both sound and atmosphere. With its minimalist arrangement, the track first nestles in gently, lulling the listener into its world -- only to tighten its grip as a synth sequence gradually opens its cut-off filter, slicing through the calm, drilling into the mind, and shifting the mood from tranquil to tense. Also available on color vinyl (COR 179ACOL-EP).

KOM EX127EP

After three so elegant, as well as successful EPs on the mothership, you can sometimes get cocky. Jonathan Kaspar invites himself to the Speicher party and really lets his hair down. "Topper" may or may not refer to Charlie Sheen's epic performance in "Hot Shots". It certainly takes no prisoners either. The track rattles and squeaks like an old feather bed while... oh, let's leave that to your imagination. After such an exhilarating burst of exuberance, comes "FEZ" to smooth the waters. An arpeggio that seems quite serious at first glance doesn't quite manage to get past Jonathan's riotous mood unscathed. Half he pulled it, half it sank into him. Nobody gets out of here without a hangover.

KOM 438EP
|
New great four-tracker EP by Jonathan Kaspar. Renowned German artist Jonathan Kaspar will make an eagerly-awaited return to Kompakt next month via his Umfang EP, with the four-track offering acting as his first full-length solo release on the label since March 2021. "My third Kompakt EP feels particularly special as it is the first time I'm releasing on my home label with dancefloors being open again. The result is four different tracks producing four different vibes, each of which transport my pandemic desires into today's world." --Jonathan Kaspar The title track leads the way, taking the form of a retro-leaning cut that features whirring synth stabs throughout. "Kupfer" comes next, a track packed full of emotive chords and a delicate underlying bassline, before "Am Raster" leads us to the dancefloor and beyond courtesy of minimal-laced kick patterns. "Gemach, Gemach Herr Rabe" ends proceedings on an incandescent note, as symphonic keys combine with intermittent crow samples to form a slice of wholesome, nature-inspired musical bliss. Hailing from Bonn, Germany, Jonathan Kaspar is an integral part of the scene in Cologne. He is a resident at the city's renowned Gewölbe club and also one of the current main figures at the legendary Kompakt label. His discography boasts releases on some of contemporary dance music's most esteemed labels, including Innervisions, Cocoon Recordings, and Crosstown Rebels to name a few, whilst performances at Watergate (Berlin), NDSM (Amsterdam) and Extrema Festival (Hasselt) have brought his sound to global audiences. The Umfang EP proves exactly why he has become one of Germany's most exciting prospects in recent times and with a highlight year ahead, the future certainly shines bright for Jonathan.

KOM 414EP

Kompakt welcome a local Cologne hero, Jonathan Kaspar. He's released on Crosstown Rebels, Pets Recordings, Ouie, and of course our own KX imprint. His single "Renard" was a highlight of Kompakt's recently released Total 19 collection (KOM 400LP/KOMP 154CD), so it was time to make the relationship official with a four-track EP. Opener "Kern" leads with layers of melodic synths power charged around a playful house rhythm. "Zentrum" is for that peak-time pace... elevating melodies caress a swelling mid-tempo beat. Not to mention one of the biggest breakdown's on Kompakt in some time. "Licht" literally sounds like it soars, then back to earth comes "Kante" -- the most techno inspired track of the EP -- an oscillating synth rips through solid low-end bass frequencies -- with Jonathan Kaspar skillfully demonstrating prime time, peak and valley production. Kante EP brings out his emotive, high energy style of writing and producing in a means that could be pointed to as his best work to date.

OUIE 010EP
|
Jonathan Kaspar has been making left-of-center dance music for some years; on Mera, the Cologne-based DJ and producer provides three tracks that serve as a reminder that dance music doesn't have to be one-dimensional. Opener "Mera" starts out along a shuffling, groove-heavy path before, culminating with a hummed vocal full of mystery and magic. On Strip Down" things are deeper into the drums for a full rhythm-frenzy workout. Both tracks are perfect sunrise music, as is "Weiss". Although ostensibly having more of a straight up dance floor approach, its low-slung groove reveals itself over its nine minutes a spaced-out cosmic journey.
