Quartet Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, presents the CD premiere of the delicious Detto Mariano comedy score for the Maurizio Nichetti classic, Ratataplan (1979). The film was written and directed by Maurizio Nichetti, whose specialization was pantomime acting and who also stars in the film. The wordless movie stars Nichetti as Colombo, an engineer who is known for coming up with unusual solutions to problems. In a number of colorful vignettes, you see him invent brilliant contraptions such as a breakfast machine, the secret of eternal life and even a dancing robot. The score composed by Detto Mariano is as colorful as Colombo's inventions. The main theme is a vocal duet, reflecting on the film's optimistic message that even an oddball like the hero can find a mate. Colorful source cues for the flats around Colombo's loft are augmented with great music for the film's memorable set pieces, including a theatrical performance where a cardboard piano comes to life and a couple of infectious disco songs to which the dancing robot can jam. CAM released a 33-minute LP in 1979; for this edition, the program has expanded to offer the complete score. Mastered by Claudio Fuiano from stereo session master tapes provided by Gruppo Sugar. Comes in a richly illustrated package featuring liner notes by Gergely Hubai that discuss both film and score.

Musica Per Immagini present the first vinyl release of Detto Mariano's Delitto Al Ristorante Cinese, the second original soundtrack in the so-called "delitti" series. It's another classic iteration of the crime-comedy films that came out of the partnership between director Bruno Corbucci and actor Tomas Milian, a special connection that had started with the great success of Squadra Antiscippo (1976) and was followed by eleven more pictures, all centered on the character of Nico Giraldi, a former criminal who, while having become a cop, was unwilling to give up his in your face attitude and the Roman slang of the city's thieves. The score by the Italian composer is a mix of sounds characterized by a unique investigation of musical timbre. Nine tracks that cross the entire sound spectrum: electronic pulses, funk rhythms, jazz, and Mediterranean sounds, and some oriental atmospheres.

1983's Amore tossico (Toxic Love) is a legendary cult film, a stark and unflinching look at Italy's "junkie generation." Director Claudio Caligari approached the film more like a documentary than a work of fiction, casting recovering junkies as his actors; Caligari "imagined it more as a straight-up visual ethnography, hyperreal, replete with humor in the most grotesque situations -- like life." Accompanying Caligari's stark imagery and story is the soundtrack by Detto Mariano -- a prolific composer, arranger, and pianist -- who wrote the entirety of the score on his Fairlight Series IIx, a now-revered synthesizer that had just been released in 1983. The sound is therefore scary and up-to-date, a true companion to the vivid and rough imagery of the movie. This led the composer to a brand-new level of engagement; the machine is the tool, hence the music becomes something like the Italian answer to the industrial revolution. Coming from an academic background, Detto Mariano knew little of industrial music, but in fact Amore tossico can easily be associated with such pioneers of the genre as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. The soundtrack is dark, angular, harsh, and -- just at times -- funky, rivalling the intensity of Carpenter's The Thing (1982) or Throbbing Gristle's Heathen Earth (IRL 004CD/LP, 1980). Never before available on any format, this soundtrack has been mastered from the original tapes and is now available as a deluxe 140-gram LP in a gatefold sleeve with a bonus CD of the entire album plus a reproduction of the original film poster.
