As the spirits of Metope's country-themed album Black Beauty (AREAL 008CD/066LP) ride towards the blood-red sunset of the Sierra Berlina, suddenly, a horn-blowing cavalry arrives. Starring remix outlaws Louie Fresco, Joerg Burger, Sid Le Rock and crazy cowgirl Ada.

AREAL 066LP
|
Double LP version with free CD. Black Beauty is the second album from Metope for his co-founded Areal Records label. Much like its precursor, Kobol (AREAL 005CD), the album swoons between techno, minimal and house timbres as well as poignantly-colored melodies. Nestled amidst eerie dance moments such as "No Self-Control," "Deep Sheep" and "Alive," however, are these woozy, country-kissed ballads like "So Cutoff" and the riff-led "Rough Romance" that ply Black Beauty with blues and soul. Married with Metope's warped and wonky electronic vision -- epitomized by the album's serene slo-mo conclusion, "Blood River" -- Black Beauty is a blissfully tender listen, while providing left-field DJs with plenty of weird and wonderful floor fodder to play with. The album features guest appearances from Areal artists Sid LeRock (aka Pan/Tone), Undo and Stiggsen as well as electro-blues guitarist and singer K_Chico.

It's not unlikely that you will sometimes find the most beautiful houses in the most unexpected corners of Berlin. For the 7th release on International Records Recordings, co-founder Metope stayed at home all summer long to work on these tracks just to make everyone happy. It's always a special moment for Metopology when it covers you in a warm coat of confidence.

The monster with its world-wolfing tentacles hurtling at nearly the speed of light towards Earth was an entirely unforeseen problem. According to our measurements of the alien's blood circulation, its heart seems to be marked in intervals of 16s, with a strong focus on the 5th and 13th heartbeat. Maybe this is the reason for the sudden change of course. Some really loud radio signal on our planet must have attracted the alien. Our agents are already searching for the originator throughout the world.

Remixes of Metope's "Kobol," by Sleeparchive, Ada and Basteroid. Millions of penguins were positive that they had reached their final destination. While the other penguins remained still in silence, there was one who poked his head above the surface. But what he had witnessed at a first glance was very difficult to explain. Completely out of breath, he explained to the others about an ice floe, one more enormous than any he had ever seen. Again, it was hard to explain, but attached to the floe there were these strange pink jewels, each of them with a blue wing fluttering above it. And beyond, in the distance, he was pretty sure that he had seen a shadow. The shadow of a monster.

AOP LOVE002
|
"The second release of our 'Love' series presents two love songs by no one else than Areal's label boss Metope himself. The A-side 'Agapi' is a combination of maximum thrust with an extreme generation of heat thanks to a maximum of utmost possible friction. This is a real, pure techno monster with loads of passion that only a Greek lover can develop. Bumpy and mega-groovy beats offer the necessary thrust accompanied by a Metope-characteristic bass line that is knarzing itself into ecstasy by its inherent peculiarity. In other words, this an electronic courtship of beats, bass line and lashing snares. And one thing is for sure: the sophisticated arrangement guarantees sticky, sweating bodies and hot soles. 'Serenity' has a dubby character, it is full of dark melancholy and shows the necessary deepness of a love song."

2001 release. "Metope intensifies with his second work on Areal his tendency to dark sharpness and deepness with constant progress. 'Magnetic' banishes the audience with generated resonant circuits and amplifies permanent its attraction and its sphere of activity. 'Memory' first supplies powerful itself with all necessary information and then surrounds itself with a swirling and percussive atmosphere to discharge later in a bass-heavy-repititive way, which takes care for durable pressure.

As quickly as electronic music changes, at least the thread of quality from one strand to the next is constant. Labels like Kompakt, Traum and Trapez have long carried the banner of funky minimalism, and as can be expected a new riser is here: Areal. After releasing the stunning Blondie CD from Ada, Areal returns with its second full-length. It so happens it is from the head of the label, Michael Schwanen. And Michael is Metope, and Metope is the new techno captain. It only makes sense Metope comes from the Greek architectural definition meaning "between the openings" because that is where Schwanen works his magic. Metope has mastered the distance between beats, drawing in tweaks, warm pads and jilting statics. As in "Superimbat," which conducts techno much in the way Isolée conducts house: as a shifting, gathering electronic zephyr. And yet there are softer sounds like "Alm Realm," which could be seen easily on a Morr Music compilation. Metope out-pitches Superpitcher with "I'm So Ready," a 6+ minute stonker that is covered in hi-hat tinsel and shifts currents like El Niño. And who can overlook "Tilt," the 10-minute opus (and CD-only bonus track). Appropriately named: as it totters, it grinds out fuzzy/gilded harmonic dreams. The evolution of electronic music is as inevitable as sunset. Metope is simply the latest to confront the cutting edge and peer over. What is next who can say, but live with Metope while you are here, and, at night, stare at the space between the stars.

"The crazy catalogue of Areal has yet another increase to the output! Two new funny tracks are joining the ranks and the components actually serve a usefulness! First we have 'Libertango' (the happy little song) always in a top-balls mood. Something to be shown to all your get-along friends (no cutting!, and noooo glueing!). Also included in the package, we have 'Parallel To You', you know what? Keep this one for yourself, it may poke someone's eye out and thats not so happy happy, joy, joy. If they both go off and come apart, no children's birthday party is safe anymore. Be the greatest in your gang and turn the volume up on your record player to top level....you know, way up!. (Also try this with your parents player...they will love you even more then your other brothers or sisters). Warning! Not suitable for children under 3 years of age. Small parts can be inhaled or swallowed....hmmm, that means danger!"

"Admittedly, 7'4" feet tall Hans and his Italian dwarf pony Monty were unmatched partners. But their constellation had a decisive advantage. Like this Hans was able to support his loyal fellow using his own legs. Besides both of them loved exploring the plains of the wild wild west listening to the funny clip-clap of their cheerful 6-foot- gallop."
