GRD 003EP
|
After a two year hiatus Graded is back with label founder Midland at the controls and it's been worth the wait. Blush EP is left-of-center club music for warehouses and basements alike. The A-side 'Blush' has stuttering rolling percussion and a synth line as bold as it is unusual make this one a very strong club tool. On the B-side 'Outpost' and 'Holdup' take a deeper turn, rich in suspense and expertly programmed drums, they're unmistakably Midland productions drawn from the more obscure corners of his sound pallet.

AUS 1468EP

The secret to Midland's success perhaps lies in his ability to keep his listeners guessing; with each new release, a new sound palette is presented, always adding more color to his catalog. This new EP is no exception, as this time he draws out immersive pads and understated melody over the top of percussive grit, in parts channeling some of that irresistible Autonomous Africa flavor. The release has already garnered support from DJs and radio alike with Jamie XX playing out "Reflex" on both his recent Boiler Room and BBC Radio 1 guest mix, while another early unveiling of "Pitch Drift" dropped recently on Benji B's show.

2014 repress. "Trace" is one of Aus' most successful recordings to date and a real statement of intent for both Midland and Aus going into 2013. It was voted 16th best track of 2013 by Resident Advisor and came in at #3 in both DJ Mag and Mixmag's tracks of the year. To celebrate in 2014, we see the return of "Trace," with remixes from tribal techno legend Grain and Aus affiliate, Leon Vynehall.

AUS 1344EP

2014 repress. The release of Midland's Placement EP as well as collaborative projects with Pariah and Breach show the continued development of his off-kilter take on electronic music. He has backed these up with a slew of remixes for James Zabiela, Guy Gerber, Dusky, Flume, and Lucky Paul. In 2013, the consistently close relationship between Aus and Midland continues apace with him once again launching the label's release schedule with the Trace EP.

2014 repress. Hot on the heels of Midland's Placement EP, Aus returns with a remix 12" featuring Lone and Motor City Drum Ensemble. Both producers deliver deep, melodic reinterpretations of the originals, with Lone accentuating Midland's signature sound (while flawlessly incorporating his own neon-tinged atmospherics) and MCDE dubbing out the original, pushing it into throbbing Raw Cuts territory.

Midland, the now-London-based producer returns to Aus with the much-anticipated Placement EP. Staying true to his roots, he delivers four tracks that contribute to the continuing conversation between techno, house, garage and beyond. With a strong focus on intricate detail, lush texture and glacial melody, the EP is just as captivating on headphones as it is on the dancefloor.

2014 repress. Leeds-based producer Midland (aka Harry Agius) offers an excursion that explores the boundaries of 2-step, UK garage and techno. "Through Motion" shows Midland's ability to seamlessly take the spirit of UK garage and fuse it with techno. The track's moody piano melody is punctured by a dark, pitch-shifted vocal and encircled by his warm trademark atmospherics. "Shelter" is a brooding, cavernous affair whose vocals and whispery atmospherics make this the perfect late-night tool.

PHONICA 005EP
|
Phonica Records calls upon Leeds-based producer Midland for its fifth 12" release, a four track EP that also includes a remix from Dexter. "Play The Game" begins moodily with ethereal vocal snippets à la Burial, Pangaea or Joy Orbison skirting the rhythm's surface. Dexter completely reinvents the track into big-room, electro-inflected techno. "Leitmotif" is even deeper, with spectral FX and panning, dubbed-out percussion, while "Head Down" continues Midland's penchant for melodic, echo-drenched chords and disembodied vocal textures.
