Mikkel Metal returns to Copenhagen's Echocord with his new mini-LP Just Enough Light, comprising six originals from the Danish artist. Copenhagen-based producer and DJ Mikkel Metal has been a beacon of light in the Danish electronic music scene and further afield for nearly two decades now, with the dub techno imprint from his hometown, Echocord, being the predominant home for his output, whilst also releasing material on Cologne's Kompakt, Tartelet, Semantica, and Avant Roots, a telling sign of the quality embodied in his work. Here though you'll see Mikkel deliver a mini-album concept in the shape of Just Enough Light and opener "Awake" perfectly sets the tone with emotive, dynamically unfolding atmospherics, tension building bass drones and spiraling dub chords subtly easing us into the project. "Bregnan" then stirs in some classic dub techno tropes with billowing stab sequences, lumpy subs and off-beat hi hats carrying the hypnotic groove for six-and-a-half minutes. "Jech" then strips things back to an almost beatless amalgamation of murky chords and modulating synth whirrs. Opening the flip side of the release is "Include" which embraces a brighter feel via ethereal pad swells, jazz-tinged synth melodies, and bumpy 909 rhythms before "Konkin" edges back into the eerie, brooding aesthetic with bubbling echoes, broken drums, and menacing bass swells at its core. "Restore" then closes the package on a stripped-back vibe, laying focus on an ever- evolving singular dub chord to ebb-and-flow around thunderous subs, kicks, and bright hats.

Double LP version. Mikkel Metal was the first artist on Echocord and the main reason for the label's inception. After many releases, he returns to Echocord in 2016 with his first full-length album since 2008's Peaks and Troughs (ECHO 004CD). Bypassing dub-techno as the starting point, this is music clearly consistent with his earlier output. Its ten tracks evolve around a melancholic melodic framework, and while there is clearly a nod to Detroit and another to dub-techno, the overall impression is consistently and unmistakably of Mikkel Metal himself. A hypnotic, very enjoyable, and thorough return from the Danish artist.

Echocord veteran Mikkel Metal aka Mikkel Meldgaard presents the Quest #14 EP, a solid, diverse release that puts a fine variety of production on display. From the slow, tough grooves through the rolling groove with filtered themes to the more classic dub techno, we are unmistakably and safely in the hands of Mikkel Metal. This EP also contains a powerful, metallic peak-time remix of the 2010 Metal track "Further" by Pattern Repeat aka Kenneth Christiansen (Echocord owner) and Resoe (Baum owner). Mikkel Metal has released on many labels since his career began, including Tartelet and Semantica.

Mikkel Metal has been a main artist on Echocord since the label's beginning, and since then, he has been getting more and more active within the music scene. On this EP he presents the rough side of the genre, with raw, warehouse-infused, dubby grooves. Both tracks are perfect for the peak-time dancefloor and for fans of Levon Vincent, Kassem Mosse and the Berghain sound of Berlin. On purple vinyl.

TART 019EP
|
Mikkel Metal's Tartelet EP travels deep into the spectral voids of space. Empyrean pads and raw drums reverberate on "Cassini" -- soft kicks with shrill claps and a prodding bassline bringing back memories of Mikkel Metal's earlier dubby excursions. "Mazurski" is a galaxy of beaming details and radiant synth lines. Following on the same side is the dub version (vinyl-only), outlined by a scrapping kick, filtering sequences of sonic waveforms and abraded sub-basslines. These cuts will transport you beyond.

Echocord is proud to release a new killer EP by Mikkel Metal. All 3 tracks are made for the dancefloor -- stripped-down, dubby techno tracks. Again, Mikkel moves into another direction, more dirty, raw and minimal, but at the same time you can immediately hear that it's a Mikkel Metal release. Fans of Omar S. and Kassem Mosse should pick this one up.

Mikkel Meldgaard aka Mikkel Metal explores new facets of his sound and takes a detour from his usual dub-techno trademark. While obviously still retaining a "Metal" signature, there's a raw, dirty Detroit sound here that is new to his production. "Further" is a slow, tough track with a heavy kick-drum and a simple theme that is reminiscent of early Metal productions. "No Starts Today" and "I Dream" both build on simple, dirty grooves with synth layers and distorted themes on top.

This is Mikkel Metal's first release on Echocord Colour. "Kenton" is a powerful techno track with a unique dubby feeling. It's absolutely perfect for the dancefloor -- a little bit like his old stuff on Kompakt. The B-side is remixed by the Berlin Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann. Marcel is one of the most productive artists at the moment, and this is a powerful remix: a mixture of techno and the new dubstep sound. On light blue-colored vinyl.

Part 3 in a 3-part remix series of Mikkel Metal of his Peaks And Troughs tracks, featuring vocals by Paul St. Hilaire. "Visions Of Life" is a very powerful dubby track, "Stephan" is a slow, dusty dub track, with a touch of the old Rhythm & Sound feeling, and on the flip you'll find a dub version of "Get Over." The remix is by Mike Huckaby, who turned "Stephan" into a jackin' Chicago track. Initial copies on dark blue marble vinyl.

This is Copenhagen-based producer Mikkel Meldgaard's (aka Mikkel Metal) fourth full-length release, and third for the Echochord label. Peaks And Troughs contains 11 brand new tracks by Mikkel, and four of them contain vocals by Paul St. Hilaire. On this album, Mikkel works with a vocalist for the first time, and it has always been his wish to do something with Paul St. Hilaire. Paul St. Hilaire, formerly known as Tikiman from The Caribbean Island, now lives in Berlin and is known from his own label False Tuned, and many, many productions with labels such as Rhythm & Sound, Burial Mix and Mainstreet. On Peaks And Troughs, Mikkel presents his own unique style of dub -- dark, seductive, and sometimes gritty, with the same measured and atmospheric attention to beats consistent with his previous releases. The stellar vocals by Paul St. Hilaire seem more than a natural fit and a higher-level commitment to deep dubness for which Mikkel Metal is most worthy.

Part 2 in a 3-part remix series of Mikkel Metal of his Peaks And Troughs tracks. This EP contains vocals by Paul St. Hilaire plus a remix by Pole aka Stefan Betke. "Get Over" is a smooth, dubby melodic track, for fans of Burial and Rhythm & Sound, while "Frico" is a more easygoing 4/4 track, perfect for the dancefloor. The Pole remix is 8 minutes long, and very deep and dubby. Pressed on blue vinyl.

This is Copenhagen-based producer Mikkel Meldgaard's (aka Mikkel Metal) third full-length release, and second for Echochord. Mikkel started his music career more than 10 years ago as a guitarist in various noise-rock bands. In the mid-'90s his focus changed to electronic music, inspiration coming primarily from breakbeat music, particularly drum'n'bass. It's during this period that gave Mikkel his nickname "Metal," due to his fondness for hard, metallic drum'n'bass cuts. Around 1999, Mikkel changed focus towards genres like click'n'cuts, IDM, techno and dub, and started releasing under the Mikkel Metal moniker. He has primarily released on Danish label Echochord and German label Kompakt: the former with a dubby, grainy sound, the latter focusing on a more melodic and 4/4-based sound. These ten brand new tracks range from 4-to-the-floor deep minimal tracks to dubby abstract ambient. Once again, Mikkel excels at bringing a modern twist to electronic dub and techno that ranks him in the same league of such luminaries as Deadbeat, Vladislav Delay, Pole and Maurizio.

KOMP 048CD
|
The first full-length from Copenhagen-based producer Mikkel Metal (aka Mikkel Meldgaard). The tracklist comprises seven previously-unreleased tracks plus three tracks previously released on Kompakt. The CD is backed up by a 12" vinyl release containing four of the new tracks. Mikkel Metal has always refused to force himself on the listener, he would rather act as a commentator on what can occur from a higher state of conscience, without provoking any sort of superiority complex. Arrogance is not his thing. Victimizer is his self-invented expression, giving new meaning to the proverb "the more haste, the less speed." Pay heed and be prepared to be bewildered as to where one should categorize this release -- though Victimizer inspires from the fringes of dub, indie-rock, vocoder-pop and of course minimal techno, this album isn't so simple as to pigeonhole itself in your encyclopedia of genres. Genuinely, Mikkel Metal has delivered dynamic, universal music that once again showcases the progressive growth and depth in Kompakt's blossoming family.

"The 4th remix EP of Mikkel Metal. This time the remixes are done by no one else than Vainqueur, The Modernist and Michael Mayer. Vainqueur aka René Lówe from Hardwax in Berlin did a remix with the typical Vainqueur sound, like the old Chain Reaction and Basic Channel releases. Very dark and minimal grooves. René is a part of Scion, also releasing on Chain Reaction. The Modernist remix is more poppy, with vocals by himself. Very groovy, with dubby elements, perfect for the dancefloor. Michael much deeper than before... very cool atmosphere with the typical Mayer feeling."

"The album Close Selections by Mikkel Metal contains a selection of tracks produced between 2001 and 2004. Most of the material has been released earlier on 12" vinyl by the Danish label Echocord. Building his compositions on elements of noise, dub, house and ambient sensibilities, Mikkel Metal manages to create a very personal album with lots of depth, subtlety and variety."

"This is the 3rd release in the popular remix series of Mikkel Metal tracks. This time the remixes are done by no one else than Thomas Fehlmann, Dub Surgeon aka Jay Haze and Anders Ilar. A1 is a typical shuffle Thomas Fehlmann rmx, which is the most party-oriented track on this release. Thomas is one half of the super-group the Orb. B1 is a minimal, groovy remix by Dub Surgeon aka Jay Haze. Jay is running the 3 respected labels, Tuning Spork, Future Dub and Contexterrior + the internet label Textone. B2 is a more down to earth crackling rmx by Anders Ilar. Anders is from Stockholm, and has done a lot of releases for labels like Plong and Shitkatapult."

"This is the 2nd remix EP of old Mikkel Metal tracks. A1 is a slow, dubby remix by Substance aka DJ Pete from Hardwax Berlin. Pete has releaes several records on Chain Reaction as Substance and is one half of the group Scion together with René Lówe. This remix reminds me of the old Basic Channel and Chain Reaction releases with a Mikkel Metal touch. B1 is a remix by the Berlin group Bus. Bus is Daniel Meteo and Tom Thiel. This remix is the most party-oriented track of the EP, with lots of dub elements. B2 is a remix by Opiate aka Thomas Knaak. This remix is a typical Opiate production with lots of clicks and atmospheres."
