Maayan Nidam, an artist in flux, continues to change, evolve, and challenge boundaries both in her Berlin studio and on stage. She has built a reputation as a fine DJ and producer who favors a subtle approach towards mesmeric moments. Her DJ sets, predominantly based in stripped-back, deep sounds, utilize an intriguing vinyl collection, using obscure interludes for re-contextualization. This approach makes for some magical moments on the dancefloor, where a night's highlight may come from the most unlikely of tracks. As a musician obsessed about sound and the technology behind its creation, her workflow places a strong focus on the studio environment. Triggering chain reactions between guitar pedals, drum machines, modular synths, and acoustic instruments, generating sounds in unpredictable, exciting ways. Inspired by her 2014 performances as The Waves with an accompanying band, Maayan has developed a solo live set that allows her to further her studio experiments and take them on the road. Maayan Nidam's (Miss Fitz, Laverne Radix, Spunky Brewster) second album New Moon has many different levels. Stylistically, the Berlin-based producer has created a work of alternative electronic rhythms that combines everything from blissful broken beat, to surrealist electro, jazz-influenced moments, acidic house, exploratory techno, and piano interludes. Psychologically though, there is much more going on. Clearly unfazed by constructing a bigger, more audacious picture, Nidam links her many different artistic desires on this album through cyclical electronic expressionism. The album is expansive. Disparate influences and eras are joined together through a subtle interplay of contrast and tone. The beats, repetition and some occasional fruity whistle stops make the journey absorbing and multi-dimensional. Beginning with a downtempo treat called "On My Street," New Moon immediately captivates you with a dreamy, sun-kissed afternoon feel. Worming its way through soft electro on "Harmonious Funk" (whose lyrics hint at a possible universal truth) it arrives at the quirky synthesizer jam, "Trippin' Over You," which plays out like a strange ode to chemical love. The rolling, bass-driven house of "The Great Suspenders" is a loose, groovy bumper and perfect for those ever-so-serious after-parties. "Send A Pigeon" plays out like an electronic symphony of doom, with its squealing feedback and fluttery distortion evolving subtly. The album then takes you down another unexpected corridor with "Undermine," which sees a fun, child-like melody slowly beat a warbled techno loop into submission. "Sunday Sunday" is its warm piano accompaniment. Disco loops, filters, delays, and a gorgeous vocal then clash on "Lies In Love." And then, once again, we find Nidam playing with juxtaposition on the impending unease of "Last Moon," with its warped vocals and twisted syncopated beats. Finally, "Never Forever" ends the album on a high note with perhaps a hint or an amalgamation of the album's base ideals: freedom, truth, and the cyclical nature of change. Spread across two LPs and a bonus limited edition 7", the vinyl version includes 10 out of the 11 tracks from the CD.

The making of this record inadvertently began in Cuba in January, 2008. Powershovelaudio was in Havana, recording some of the best contemporary Cuban singers and musicians. The resulting recordings were of an inspiring beauty, and the label decided that this outstanding collection of voices, woodwinds and brass needed to be deconstructed and reassembled by a female talent in honor of their upcoming series devoted to women in contemporary music and art. Nightlong is a synthetic work. Maayan has inexplicably, quickly and with incredible precision, captured the essence and the expressivity of the Cuban musicians and taken it to a hitherto unknown place. Maayan is well-known for her diligent talent in inserting voices of quality in her mixes, but on this occasion, the result is spellbinding. Instead of concentrating on her signature minimal beats, Maayan has experimented with different cadences, depths and moods, leaving behind a swirling, disconcerting record of inspired beauty. Minimal bolero? Loungetronica? Doesn't matter -- it is mature, accomplished, utterly danceable and totally unique.
