Papir, from Copenhagen, Denmark, have gradually developed their unique vision of instrumental psychedelic rock over the course of four albums. The two albums collected here, Papir III (EPR 012LP, 2013) and Papir IIII (EPR 015LP, 2014), perfectly encompass everything the band represents -- from explosive, guitar-solo driven peaks through motoric krautrock grooves to peaceful and atmospheric soundscapes. Recorded in two different sessions, one in Copenhagen and another out in the Danish countryside with Causa Sui's Jonas Munk, who also mixed and mastered both albums, producing them with an organic but powerful sound and maintaining the full dynamic range.

Double LP version. After four studio albums, Papir unleash their first live album. It's surprising it took so long, since the band's shows have long been revered among fans. Recorded at the 2014 Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands, where Papir were asked to perform three times. It's the complete recording of the first and finest of these shows that Papir have chosen for this release, and it's all here: Christoffer Brøchmann's jaw-dropping drum chops, easing from delicate jazzy drumrolls one second into deranged math-psych explosions the next; Nicklas Sørensen's vast array of guitar styles, blending post-rock drones with majestic wah-drenched soloing; and Christian Becher keeping it all together with his bouncing and booming bass lines, as well as utilizing his groovemaker to make blistering ethereal soundscapes. From the first note, Papir show just how far they've travelled over the span of a few years, catapulting a motoric track off their 2010 self-produced DIY self-titled debut into new soaring heights. The show also reworks "Monday" and "Sunday #2" from Stundum (EPR 007CD/LP), their first El Paraiso release, and drops a highlight from 2014's IIII (EPR 015LP) into the equation. As if this wasn't enough, they premiere two tracks with the same stamina, making sure that Live At Roadburn is not just a roadmap of where they've been, but very much an up-to-date snapshot of one of Europe's hardest working instrumental outfits. The album was mixed and mastered by Causa Sui's Jonas Munk from a 24bit multitrack recording.

2021 repress. Ten-year anniversary edition on crisp 2021 remastered 2LP! Edition of 500. Papir's second album, Stundum, is perhaps the purest distillation of their sound. At this point the three-piece had slowly been evolving their style, playing drawn-out, semi-improvised live sets for over a year. When they went to record Stundum with Causa Sui's Jonas Munk handling production duties, there was a plethora of accumulated ideas ready to burst. An album that not only would come to define the band, but also one of the early releases on El Paraiso Records that would go on to characterize the direction of the label. Stylistically, Papir cover a lot of ground: they fuse intense psychedelica with post-rock, krautrock, jazz and just a sprinkle of ambient. Based around Christoffer Brøchmann Christensen's powerful and complex drumming, they create instrumental journeys -- organic structures of sound that move forward with the hypnotic groove of Can or electric Miles Davis, through euphoric peaks, thunderous riffs and beautiful cosmic dronescapes. Nicklas Sørensen's guitar playing displays his admiration for the psychedelic explorers from the 1960s and 1970s, but also has a highly melodic aspect that reveals his appreciation for cosmic German heroes Michael Rother and Manuel Göttsching. Christian Becher Clausen's bass playing covers a wide palette of sounds -- sometimes using the instrument as a solid groove-maker and other times as a tool for creating spacy soundscapes and drones. As a unit the three members achieve what the great power trios of the 1960s did at their most fertile: the ability to combine each facet of the band into a whole that surpasses the sum of its parts. There's still something very refreshing about Papir's genre-transcending psychedelia, and Stundum is without a doubt one of their finest records. The album was recorded with Jonas Munk during an intensive week-long stretch in a small secluded house on Zealand (Denmark's biggest island) during a rare blizzard, with Munk producing the album with a full-bodied and natural sound. An essential El Paraiso release.

2014 repress of the second album from Papir, originally released in 2011. Papir is a trio from Copenhagen, Denmark who have played together for years under various names while slowly, but surely, perfecting their unique brand of semi-improvisational psychedelic rock. Based around Christoffer Brøchmann's complex and powerful drumming, Papir creates instrumental journeys -- organic structures of sound that move forward with the hypnotic groove of Can or electric Miles Davis through euphoric peaks, thunderous riffs and beautiful cosmic dronescapes. Nicklas Sørensen's guitar playing displays his love for fuzzed-out psychedelic rock from the 1960s and 1970s but also has a highly melodic aspect that reveals his admiration for German heroes Michael Rother and Manuel Göttsching. Similarly Christian Becher Clausen's bass playing covers a wide palette of ideas and sounds -- sometimes using the instrument as a solid groove-maker and other times as a tool for creating spacy soundscapes and drones. As a unit the three members achieve what the great power trios of the 1960s did at their most fertile: the ability to combine each aspect of the band into a whole that surpasses the sum of its parts. This is music to lose oneself in -- music to swim in.

This 2CD set collects Papir's two latest albums, previously released on vinyl only. III (EPR 012LP) originally came out in February 2013, IIII (EPR 015LP) in February 2014. Papir from Copenhagen, Denmark have gradually developed their unique vision of instrumental psychedelic rock over the course of four albums. The band manages to transform heavy, psychedelic music into something new and relevant, something truly unique. By now the band's concerts have become awe-inducing experiences, earning them slots at major European festivals including Roskilde (2012), and Roadburn (2014). It's stunning to witness how Papir pull numerous influences together with natural ease in their often lengthy excursions. It sounds inspired. These two albums perfectly encompass everything the band represents -- from explosive, guitar solo-driven peaks through motorik Krautrock grooves to peaceful and atmospheric soundscapes. Recorded in two different sessions, one in Copenhagen and another out in the Danish countryside with Causa Sui's Jonas Munk, who also mixed and mastered both albums, producing them with an organic but powerful sound and maintaining the full dynamic range.

Papir from Copenhagen, Denmark have gradually developed their unique vision of instrumental psychedelic rock over the course of three albums. On IIII, their fourth, they have created their most condensed and realized work to date. The amazing thing about Papir is how they transform heavy, psychedelic music into something new and relevant, something truly unique. Sure, Papir knows their Kraut and prog-rock history, but unlike the majority of bands in the present day psych-rock scene, they venture far beyond mere pastiche. Guitarist Nicklas Sørensen and bassist Christian Becher aren't afraid to explore sounds and styles usually associated with post-rock, minimalism or even shoegaze, and drummer Christoffer Brøchmann plays with a skill, ferocity and richness of ideas that is so rare. By now the band's concerts have become awe-inducing experiences, earning them slots at major European festivals including Roskilde (2012), and Roadburn (2014). It's stunning to witness how Papir pull numerous influences together with natural ease in these three lengthy excursions. Not only is it heavier than previous efforts, it seems more lush and atmospheric as well. IIII is the sound of a band fulfilling its potential. The album was recorded in two different sessions, one in Copenhagen and another out in the Danish countryside with Causa Sui's Jonas Munk, who also mixed and mastered the album, giving it an organic but powerful sound with the full dynamic range intact.

2023 repress. Papir is an instrumental trio from Copenhagen, Denmark. They've created their own unique type of semi-improvised psychedelic rock by mixing together new and old, heaviness and atmosphere, freedom and power. By now, they have become masters of their craft, and this, their third album, earns them a spot in the absolute elite of the current European psychedelic rock scene. Everyone who has been lucky enough to catch the band live know what a reverence-inducing experience their energetic, adventurous explorations can be. Papir don't just reach back to the bygone golden era of psychedelic rock and electric jazz like so many others do -- they transcend it. Their music sounds vital and fresh. These guys are certainly on their own path and Papir III is their most fully-realized album to date, it encompasses everything the band represents in a single piece of heavy vinyl -- from explosive, guitar-solo-driven peaks through motorik Krautrock grooves to peaceful and atmospheric soundscapes. Like its predecessor, the album was recorded during a single intense week and produced by Jonas Munk (Causa Sui), capturing the band in the midst of their creative prime.
