"Introducing Detroit-based Theo Parrish's newest two-track EP. Traffic Jams is Parrish's response to stagnation and nonmovement. In his own words: 'Traffic Jams are really coagulation and inflammation in the body. Mental stresses are Traffic Jams. Moments where there is no flow are all due to Traffic Jams. Within the mind fear and doubt are Traffic Jams.' The first song of the EP, 'Positive Mental Attitude Solves All,' is a tribute to the eternal elder and stalwart, Amp Fiddler. Both songs on the EP put together become 'Positive Mental Attitude Solves All Traffic Jams.'"

"Theo Parrish is a master crafter of a decidedly elusive brand of dance music, which is rare. Most sounds that identify as 'dance music' take bold measures to make their intentions known, but Parrish's sound -- an odd, insinuating kind of house music -- counts as more-suggestive and sly, with subtle textural rubs and beats that register as ellipses more than exclamation points. Parrish's is a message that arrives by way of coded whispers and hums. One of the byproducts of Parrish's elusiveness is that you have to work a little to hear him. This makes for a special kind of disconnect where newcomers might be left to wonder what Parrish partisans (and there are many) find to fetishize in tracks that play like little more than sketchy drafts or protracted sashays. The keys to the enterprise are patience and an abiding sense of a project at work -- a cunning, cumulative project that rewards immersion more than immediacy. All of which makes Sound Sculptures Volume 1 an ideal way to hear Parrish in his many moods. Parrish rarely lays off the EQ, and his tracks are all the better for it. The smallest adjustments of sound -- upticks of treble on the drums, changes of emphasis on a vocal, the accentuation and/or subtraction of pretty much everything in play at any given moment -- make what might sound like the simplest tracks spellbinding over time. And they lend Sound Sculptures a casual, easygoing sense of something always happening, as in 'They Say,' a sensuous soul song (with cooed vocals by MonicaBlaire) that sounds like IDM but way less mannered -- like Aphex Twin made by back-porch means. 'The Rink' amps up the energy to rollerskating speed (with a sample of Marvin Gaye) and 'Synthetic Flemm' (made with fellow Detroit weird-house hero Omar-S) enlists an aggressive acid line. But even at his most immediate, Parrish is graced by a sense of withholding that proves all the more generous and expressive over time." -- Andy Battaglia/Pitchfork

"After docile keys lull you into a false sense of security, Parrish starts to float aimlessly, notelessly on 'Space Station' before introducing the bassline and drums that will take you on the rest of your way. The track sounds a bit like one: While the tune clearly owes its heritage to acid house, the fidelity of the recording and the effects placed on each element is decidedly otherworldly. It could just as easily be pounded out as a skull-numbing set-changing rocker, or played as background music at your next (hip, techno-inclined) dinner party. That's all in the EQing, I suppose, and it's something that Parrish has always been known to use/abuse ably." --Resident Advisor

2020 repress, from 2008. "... 'Chemistry' is one of the immediate tunes that you can't help but fall in love with -- an undeniable synth hook merging effortlessly with 'Boom, Bip, Geetar Compounds' from Adi Dick. Andreya Triana, Vito Money and Om'Mas Keith, meanwhile, repeat an idea over and over: 'The chemistry was meant to be,' a line as simple as the sentiment it's trying to express. Parrish builds, builds and builds until you find yourself in another register altogether and ready for a house track to send you into orbit. 'Untitled One' doesn't have the strike-you-down-where-you-stand appeal of 'Chemistry,' but it's one of those aforementioned growers. Piano, guitar, bass and drum all futz around in an attempt to establish a groove, but it never really grows into anything until Parrish takes things down and transforms what had been shards of piano into a coherent lick. At that point, things congeal into something akin to a funk march. This is Parrish at his most psychedelic -- helped in no small part by the noodling guitar -- and it's just as complex as anything that Villalobos has put to wax. Stunning." --Resident Advisor

2020 reprint of the CD version. "The triple vinyl set was initially released in a run of 150 during the 2010 edition of Movement in Detroit. The set of eight tracks, done in Parrish's signature roughshod style, came with spray-painted covers and featured the likes of Larry Mizell and The Rotating Assembly." --Resident Advisor

"As the title implies, it's the fourth installment in the series of the same name, which kicked off in 2016 and has since comprised the bulk of Parrish's output. This one includes the full mix of 'Leave The Funk To Us,' a track that initially appeared on Gentrified Love Part 2. The full version features contributions from Amp Fiddler, John Douglas and Ideeyah. The B-side is an 'SS Translation' of Paul Randolph & Kathy Kosins' 'Be Like Me,' a soulful jazz tune the Detroit duo released on Gilles Peterson's semi-annual Brownswood Bubblers compilation last year [2017]." --Resident Advisor
