The fourth instalment in Pev's Pulse series finds him further widening the scope of his sound as he touches on the distinct energies which inform his unique strain of soundsystem techno. "Pulse XIII" deals in stark, tweaked-out acid lines cutting through a taut drum machine backbone, balanced out with a sci-fi pad which lets you know its Pev at the controls. "Pulse XIV" finds him dialing up his jungle roots once more for a dreamy excursion into diced up breaks, cascading synths and dislocated piano chord chops. There's a deeper dub techno spirit to "Pulse XV" and "Pulse XVI" deals in the raw, bleep-informed jack tracks that have started to creep into Pev's sound as the Pulse series has evolved. Livity Sound is a label set up by Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It has since become one of the UK's foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

Matching his signature melodic futurism with enduring club music structures, Pev brings the Pulse series to a natural conclusion with the Pulse Phase EP. On this third release he underlines the broader approach to tempos and styles he's taken across this latest period of his output. If there's been a nostalgic streak detectable amongst the crisp modernism of the Pulse series, it comes through clearer than ever in the looped-up house jack and starry-eyed techno synth hooks of "Pulse IX." "Pulse TEN" pares back for a lean sound-system workout driven by a strafing arp and fractured drums while "Pulse XI" revisits '90s bleep techno with a deep, dubby intention. "Pulse XII" completes the picture capturing the skeletal pressure of two-step at its most slender and deadly. There's never a sense of over-familiarity -- the exacting angles of the drums and alien hue of the synths maintain Pev's distinctive sound first and foremost. But this series has also been an opportunity to hear some of his musical DNA more explicitly than before, cast in universal rave motifs propelled by the unrelenting pursuit of new forms for the dance. Livity Sound is a label set up by Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It has since become one of the UK's foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

Peverelist swiftly follows up the Pulse EP with another four tracks of sprightly club gear that continue to shape out his current areas of exploration in the studio. As ever, there are no fixed concepts or approaches -- just an instinct for energizing, inventive tracks taking in a range of tempos and rhythms. The first half of Pulse Modulation EP is marked out by linear rhythms which showcase the most techno aspects of Pev's sound. "Pulse V" is charged with the kind of alien synth lines which could only come from his studio, but also draw a line to the hi-tech soul of foundational Detroit techno. "Pulse VI" has a starker, bleep-led sound pitched towards tougher dancefloors. "Pulse VII" strips things back in comparison, leaning in on a blanket of bass and keeping the drums sparse and to the point -- a study in sound system pressure. Widening the spectrum of the record, "Pulse VIII" sees Pev make a rare push up into 160+ territory -- something normally reserved for his DJ sets. Swerving obvious break edits, his take on jungle is lean and crisp, delivering a fresh slant on the sound while maintaining the sharp focus of his current output. Livity Sound is a label set up by Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It has since become one of the UK's foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

LIVITY 060EP

Five years since his last solo outing, Peverelist makes a very welcome return on his own label for Livity Sound's 60th release. Having focused on expanding the innovative scope of Livity through a prolific release schedule, frequent label nights and the tenth anniversary Molten Mirrors compilation (LIVITY 049CD, 2021), on the Pulse EP, Pev delivers on his reputation for inventive, sharply-focused club music with four lean, focused club tracks across the tempo range. From the crooked formation and pointillist bleeps of "Pulse I" through the light-footed percussion and airy melodies of "Pulse II" to the strafing techno synths of "Pulse III" and the surefooted, bass-loaded house jack of "Pulse IV", it's an EP of variation and consistency in equal measure. From the infectious, alien melodic lines to the elegant angles of the drums, not to mention the weighty subs, it's all strikingly fresh and unmistakably Pev.

Livity Sound close out a busy 2015 with something of a rarity, a solo 12" from label head Pev, his first solo material since 2013's Aztec Chant 12". Almost a genre in himself, Peverelist has been releasing curveball anthems since the mid-'2000s in his own inimitable style, appearing on Hessle Audio, Skull Disco, and Tectonic as well as his own Punch Drunk and Livity Sound labels. This 12" coincides with his autumn 2015 tours of Japan and the US.

West country boy Peverelist returns home to Bristol's forefront dubstep label. What has set Peverelist's productions and DJ sets aside is his adroit blend of deep Bristolian sound system heritage with a more European, specifically Berliner take on the question of bass weight. These are two bumping joints of bass line destruction, stepping lightly around the four-four and sounding like the perfect fusion of dub and techno. Support from all the usual suspects -- MASSIVE.
