Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album forever changed popular culture on release in 1956, its earthquake aftershocks still felt some 65 years later. Gritty adaptations of Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes," Ray Charles' "I Got A Woman" and Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" helped make it the first rock and roll album to top the Billboard charts, where it remained unchallenged for a full ten weeks. The iconic cover image with its distinctive lettering, showing Presley brandishing his acoustic guitar, helped embed the instrument in rock mythology too, indelibly changing how we conceive of the genre and its axemen. Elvis Presley proved that he was already the undisputed "King of Rock 'n' Roll," just as he still is today.

Wax Love present The King As Seen On TV! a collection of Elvis Presley TV appearances in 1957. In his first nationally televised appearance, on the big band leaders Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey's TV variety show, Elvis Presley shocked the country with his sultry and sensational version of all-time classics like "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Blue Suede Shoes". And, although the Dorsey Brothers Show might have been his first national appearance, it was the legendary Ed Sullivan performance that truly put him on the map, so to speak.

This collection is where it all began, at 706 Union Ave in Memphis, Tennessee, otherwise known as Sam Phillips's legendary Sun Studios. Famously Elvis Presley walked in the door there in 1953 to record an acetate for his mother, Phillips took down his name for future reference/possible label signing and the rest, as they say, is history. Pressed into the wax on this LP are 20 of the most legendary performances in rockabilly/country/rock and roll history. An absolutely essential collection and possibly the greatest recordings of the King's storied 20+ year career.

The initial reaction to the release of this album was unbelievably one of controversy. Irving Berlin was actually horrified that his "White Christmas" was being sullied by the "vulgar kid with the gyrating pelvis," and many others agreed. The year was 1957 and Elvis Presley was still young (just 22) and dangerous, Jailhouse Rock had just hit the box office and his "Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel" single was still at the top of the charts. But despite his status as the ultimate rebel, Elvis actually managed to deliver pretty convincing versions of these Christmas classics, so much so that although Irving Berlin may still be rolling over in his grave, the album itself has taken its place as one of the best-known and loved Christmas albums of all time. Features nine bonus tracks, all recorded in 1957. 140 gram LP special edition pressed on clear red vinyl.

Rockabilly, R&B or soul -- no matter what your bag, the one and only Elvis Presley has enough power, presence and panache to offer something for everyone, and here are two alternate takes from Elvis soundtracks, GI Blues and King Creole. "Pocketful of Rainbows" is a more dancefloor-friendly take with a stronger rhythm section, which was aching for 45 release, while on the flip we have an alternate take of "Crawfish" with Jean "Kitty" Bilbrew matching Elvis in the mix.
