A pioneer of bebop, Max Roach went on to work on many other styles of music and is generally considered alongside the most important drummers in history having worked with such musicians as Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, and more! A seminal set, stretching out towards the directions Max would explore fully on the Candid, Impulse, and Fantasy labels in the '60s. Group members include Booker Little on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor, Ray Draper on tuba, and Art Davis on bass -- and the lack of a piano makes for a very exciting sound!

2022 repress. Sowing Records present a reissue of We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite, originally released in 1960 on Candid Records. One of the major statements in the history of Jazz and African American liberation movements. Highlights include the highly intense triptych for drum and voice by Roach and Lincoln and a special appearance of tenor sax giant Coleman Hawkins on the opening "Driva' Man". Clear vinyl; edition of 300.

"A good '59 session on the Bainbridge label, with drummer Max Roach leading his late '50s band through some stirring numbers. The group included tenor saxophonist George Coleman and trumpeter Booker Little and was among the finest hard bop ensembles around." --Ron Wynn, AllMusic
