The versatile singer, songwriter, pianist, musical arranger and civil rights activist Nina Simone was one of the most iconic of all jazz performers. Operating in a range of genres, from folk, blues and rhythm 'n' blues to pop, gospel and classical, Simone issued over 40 albums during a long and successful career, though bipolar disorder dramatically affected her later years. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933, she was one of eight children in a poor black family. Coolpix's 1963 release, Nina's Choice, was titled in reference to the fact that Simone chose the entire contents, drawing from a range of pop, folk, blues and show tunes, all interpreted and delivered in her uniquely expressive style.

First issued in 1961 on Columbia's early music venture Colpix, Forbidden Fruit is widely acknowledged as the best of Nina Simone's early releases. Producer Cal Lampley chose to cast her in varied settings, blending a rendition of Oscar Brown's "Rags And Old Iron" with a unique take of Bessie Smith's "Gin House Blues," contrasting with Billie Holiday's "No Good Man" and "I'll Look Around," which Simone shifts to her own image. Her backing trio aim for the understated, the rhythm section leaving ample room for Simone's appealing piano lines, nicely complimented by Al Shackman's guitar. An excellent set from Miss Simone -- grab it!

Her repertoire ranges from a swinging 'Stompin' at the Savoy' and an emotional 'It Might as Well Be Spring' to an English folk ballad ('Tomorrow'), spirituals, an R&B song ('You've Been Gone Too Long') and the theme song from the movie Middle of the Night. Somehow Simone brings credibility to each of these very different songs. She does not play much piano (just cameos on two songs) and is backed by a subtle orchestra arranged by Bob Mersey that is effective accompanying her vocals. Reissue, originally released in 1966. The singer-songwriter and pianist Nina Simone came to prominence in the late 1950s after she signed to the Bethlehem label for her debut album, Little Girl Blue. Her move to Colpix Records, the audio subsidiary of Columbia Pictures, allowed her near total artistic control of her material and her lengthy tenure with the company brought plenty of popular album releases. The 1966 oddity Nina Simone With Strings was issued by Colpix a couple of years after she left the company to begin recording for Philips; a strange mix of live recordings and studio outtakes, released without her knowledge or permission where the presence of orchestral strings on several tracks gives the album its title and overriding theme. Clear vinyl; numbered.

The orchestra is led by famous conductor Bob Mersey (staff arranger/composer for CBS television and Columbia Records and also their musical director).

This is the epic Town Hall concert held by Nina Simone (with Jimmy Bond on bass and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums) in New York on September 15th 1959 and originally released as her second album for Colpix Records. The repertoire included both traditional material and original songs written by Nina herself, plus some beautiful renditions of standards such as Gershwin's "Summertime" and Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow". Even though some of the songs featured in the concert were subsequently re-recorded in a studio for the album release.

When this album was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960, Nina Simone had just had her first Top 20 hit with "I Loves You, Porgy", but the "Porgy" found here (written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields, most famous for "I Can't Give You Anything But Love") is actually a continuation of Gershwin's original version of the story. Other highlights include "Flo Me La", an African work chant, and "Little Liza Jane", an African American folk song. A truly marvelous live performance from one of the most original voices in 20th century music.

2021 restock. 180 gram vinyl reissue, printed inner sleeve. "This unusual record from 1972 is Nina Simone's statement on the Vietnam War. The cover is a collage of news clippings from the conflict, and the song selection and arrangement, though dealing with matters more spiritual than political, reflect the events of the day. The entire first side consists of a powerhouse medley of George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' and a poem by David Nelson called 'Today Is a Killer,' set to music by Simone. The Harrison song is transformed into a sweaty gospel workout that takes its rhythm from the Capitols' 'Cool Jerk' and its call-and-response vocal arrangement from the Reverend James Cleveland. Simone artfully alternates the celebratory romp with slow, somber passages featuring her improvised lyrics and passages from the Nelson poem. Even as it passes the 18-minute mark, the medley never loses power, and it remains one of Simone's finest moments. After the triumph of the first side, the flip is only a slight letdown. "Poppies" is melodically vague, but Simone's strong delivery sells it, while George Harrison's 'Isn't It a Pity' gets an intense, drawn-out treatment, mostly featuring just Simone's piano and voice. The cover of Emergency Ward! claims it was recorded in concert, but only the first side appears to be live, and even that is riddled with sloppy edits.
