Causa Sui drummer and El Paraiso visual designer Jakob Skøtt unleashes his most personal vision to date, Instrumentality. His one-man-band formula of synths, drums, and effects serves him as well as ever. This latest set is Skøtt at his most ripe; the grooves are deeper, more stripped down to essentials, yet maintain the vibrant seamless mix of airy timing, drowning drones, and sludgy synth riffs. The album was recorded a few months after Jakob experienced a brief, yet painful spontaneous leak of brain fluid. Instrumentality draws on that experience in its titles and artwork, as well as works as its musical muse. It's music that constantly dives inwards; ever repetitive, yet constantly moving, from micro movements in Skøtt's poly-rhythms, to the five song cycles diving to the depths of the splintered nerves reconnecting with their natural flow. Includes download.

Causa Sui drummer Jakob Skøtt is back with the third installment in his "drums versus synthesizers" explorations. Fully indulging in this strange form of layered solo jams, these tracks are alive in a very real sense -- there's an organic vibe present in which monophonic synthesizers and polyphonic rhythms merge in a way you've never heard before. Any reference to other music and genres gets warped and turned on its head, quicker than you can catch onto it, as everything is weaved together in a fuzzed-out massive blanket of sound. Yet despite the roar and volume, there's a repetitive and meditative quality to these tracks -- not unlike that of free jazz, or, say, the hypnotic beat-driven music Miles created when he got into Stockhausen in the 1970s. There's even an earthy vibe ringing through the heavily modulated synths -- at times sounding more like soaring guitars or saxophones, or perhaps some unearthly rhythm-device that amalgamates rhythm and melody into one substance. This album is a result of a multicolored vision that has soaked up a wide range of styles and merged them into something fresh and radiant, and, frankly, quite groovy. Jakob Skøtt is the drummer in revered Danish experimental psych act Causa Sui and has previously collaborated with artists from Tortoise and Sunburned Hand of the Man. In a number of different outfits he has also released on such esteemed labels as Morr Music, Ghostly International, and Darla Records. Skøtt has also done exclusive live visuals and artwork for Amon Düül II, Earthless, Manual, cult actress Asia Argento, the Roadburn Festival, and El Paraiso Records.

LP version. The third album from Causa Sui drummer Jakob Skøtt expands his one-man-band experiments into vast new territories. Taurus Rising is built from motorik synthesizer arpeggios and heavy-duty live drumming. But rather than simply worshipping endless repetition, Skøtt reaches an impressive array of expressions on each of these five mini epics -- each song is ALIVE -- frequently whirling off track like the wind's direction in a sand storm, leading to some mind-altering melodies and rhythms that'll keep you on your toes. Washed currents of pulsating analog synthesizer scores, pre-fusion jazz sensibility and fuzzed-out electronics all tied together by fevered rhythms. Causa Sui drummer Jakob Skøtt returns with his second full-length under his own name. Taking the leap from his debut Doppler's (EPR 011LP) introvert kosmische synthesizer dronescapes, diving into a full-blown mad scientist one-band mode, Jakob straps on a wide array of heavy percussive modes to fuel his vivid utopia of analog synths and drums. It's one man's vision, as crazed and intoxicated as it is soothing and compelling, borrowing as many clues from Afro-beat, Latin grooves and new age ambience as it does from the booming legacy of Krautrock. The proceedings are distanced from both coolness and kitsch, and a refreshing break from any standards. "Mantis in Lace" kicks off the record with a thick, repetitive bass synth riff, on top of two drum kits battling to spontaneously combust. On top of that, a heavy percussive layer of echo-addled synthesizers is working out a path of its own: an opening statement constantly collapsing on itself. "Synthemesc" takes a calmer, yet insisting percussive mode of full bodied Moog-tone carrying the track into a John Carpenter-ish landing. "Araucaria Fire" straps on congas for a more exotic journey into an organ-riddled percussive climax, recollecting Trans Am and Tony Williams Lifetime. Side B lends itself to a more subtle start, with two tracks of electroorgasmic psychedelic bliss, leading the way into the heart of the title-track -- a heavy slice of funk as dense as any 4-piece band could have cooked it up. "Earth of No Horizon" lands the spaceship safely with echoes of Terry Riley or Vangelis. Amor Fati is unique blend of improvisation, as well as carefully structured climaxes and shifts.

LP of kosmische synth-explorations from the Causa Sui drummer. Doppler is the as-of-yet most conceptual album in El Paraiso Records' "Impetus" series, which is the label's imprint of improvisation and chance collaborations. On Doppler, Jakob Skøtt utilizes two synthesizers and a chain of effects. That's it. This may sound like a tedious exercise, but for an album mostly spliced together by layers and layers of first takes and unexpected real-time peaks and turns, there is a unique sense of both structure and texture filling these vibrant tracks. Although relying heavily on synchronization (the most important source of sound being a Prophet 600, the first polyphonic-synth to implement the midi-synchronization signal), every track constantly shifts and turns in unexpected ways. Sometimes creeping drones seamlessly leave heavy pulsations behind in the dust, other times abruptly blending melodies into strange permutations of polyrhythms, never quite settling back into any sort of pattern, an organic element being a constant presence in these tracks. The closest reference to this sort of music is, of course, the school of German kosmiche: Cluster, Kraftwerk, Harmonia, etc. But the strains of John Carpenter and Steve Reich's individual brands of modulation and repetition is just as clearly apparent throughout the album, topped off with an overall psychedelic tone ala Can or Soft Machine. Besides drumming in respected stoner-psych outfit Causa Sui, Jakob Skøtt has been involved in a wide range of projects, including drum duties for Limp and Chicago Odense Ensemble (featuring Jeff Parker and Rob Mazurek of Tortoise, etc.). Jakob also operates as the noted shoegaze-duo Syntaks alongside his girlfriend Anna. Furthermore, Jakob is the one responsible for the El Paraiso visual shtick, as well as having done exclusive live visuals for such acts as Amon Düül II, Acid Mothers Guru, actress Asia Argento, and the Roadburn festival. Impetus implies movement. The doppler effect is soundwaves shifting in pitch as the listener approaches it: Manipulation of sound through the use of space.
