ATONAL 007LP
|
Berlin Atonal announce the release of Mika Vainio's live performance at the 2016 edition of the festival. Accompanied by the artwork from Vainio's personal archives, its soft lack of focus is reminiscent of the natural looseness in his sound programming, lending itself to jazz as much as any form of electronic music. Right at the tips of his fingers, sparks fly unhindered by background noise, left to saturate in his universe of swollen intent. This pared-down, sensitive, and serious music has no parallel. Deep, throbbing analog laments emanate from the outset reaching far into the furthest fissures of Kraftwerk's main hall, a chasmic exercise in arching minimalism. Between crisp, upfront sonic assault and backset rhythmic work, it morphs about the cavernous hall exploring to the core the relationship between sound and architecture. Unrelenting and icily atmospheric, the haptic saturation arouses a body of nerves. As ever the scope of Vainio's poignant work is vast, with limited tools at his disposal. Motifs are revisited and reiterated, calmly rendering confrontational and extreme mechanisms. Feedback blasts buzz over and destroy passages, punctuated by sparse rhythm. As the performance draws towards a close, percussive sounds come to the fore. Rhythmic patterns hint but never falling into predictable repetition, always manipulated, Vainio etching away with his machines. A longform performance, of ebbing passages, it grows in quasi-orchestral style as mountainous sounds vie for daylight in a thick sound horizon. Includes photography by Mika Vainio on sleeve and printed inner sleeves; Edition of 400.

2022 repressed; double LP version. "This edition was produced and finalized in a particular context, Mika Vainio having left us on 12.04.2017. This material is the last concert he has gave. It took place at Cave12 on 02.02.2017. We needed time to listen to this archive again, which we did in situ in June 2020 with Cindy Van Acker. After this listening, we felt invested in having to make this archive public. In order to edit and work on this material, we asked Carl Michael von Hausswolff to do the mixing. At our request, this recording was organized in four movements. Stephen O'Malley kindly joined in the pre-edit process that took place on August 24 2020 at EMS Studios, Stockholm. Denis Blackham did the mastering. This process was carried out in collaboration with Rikke Lundgreen." Recorded 02.02.2017 at Cave12, Geneva by Benjamin Ephise; Edit by Stephen O'Malley and Carl Michael von Hausswolff at EMS, Stockholm; Mastered by Denis Blackham. Vinyl cut by Andreas Kauffelt at Schnittstelle, Berlin; Artworks by Franz Graf, Mika Vainio Archive, Oslo and Cm von Hausswolff collection. Cave12/Editions Mego co-release.

Mika Vainio visited the Moog Sound-Lab in April 2015. He made one his last known solo studio recordings in the form of two vinyl-sized, side-long pieces entitled Lydspor, Danish for "soundtrack". Mika worked almost exclusively with the lab's Moog Modular System 55. This UK sound-lab instrument is the sole prototype model (containing several golden filters) of Moog's sold-out reverse-engineered edition (only 55 units) recreating the 1970s classic. On completion of his sessions Mika announced: "I could work with this machine for the rest of my life... I would need nothing else." A second Moog session was planned but tragically Mika died in an accident in April 2017, shortly after he had approved the vinyl mastering.
Moog Recordings Library is new record label established specifically to release limited editions of recorded works, sessions, concerts, and audio experiments utilizing The Moog Sound Lab UK (Est. 2015). Moog Recordings Library announces its launch with three separate releases, from The Grid (RDM 102CD/LP), Mika Vainio, and Hieroglyphic Being (RDM 121CD/LP). Each of the three releases is an album length session recorded with The Moog Sound Lab UK, an open loan studio from Moog Music Inc (USA) designed to encourage the making of new electronic works and to welcome UK based artistic and public access with the aim to broaden experimentation and practical hands-on knowledge with high spec analogue and digital electronic instruments. The portable studio was specially designed by Moog Inc and is centered around one of their rarest instruments, the 2014 limited edition reissue of their legendary 1960s System 55 analog synthesizer system -- the Stradivarius of modular synths. Originally established in 2015 to mark the 10th anniversary of Dr Robert Moog's passing, the Moog Sound Lab UK was first seen publicly at the Barbican Arts Centre's three-day "Moog Concordance Vol 1" event -- a celebration of Bob Moog's contribution to contemporary music.

Mannerlaatta ("Tectonic Plate") is Mika Vainio's soundtrack for a "74 minute Lettrist film made entirely without a camera" by Finnish film maker Mika Taanila; his third following their previous collaborations: 2002's A Physical Ring and 2015's Return Of The Atom (the soundtrack was released by Blast First Petite in 2016 as Atomin Paluu - PTYT 086CD/LP). The music was written very early on in the film's two-and-a-half year development, and subsequently held a strong sway over the rhythm of the film's editing and visual narration - which takes place as a series of black and white images made from photocopying various travel documents, which were later photographed onto 35mm reversal film in a darkroom, and overlaid with text by poet Harry Salmenniemi. As Vainio tends to use a set-up of a homebuilt kit, unchanged from his very earliest productions, each new release is effectively a subtle alteration/refinement of his brutalist but tactile process of creation. And, going by that timeline of events, we'd speculate that Mannerlaatta was conceived somewhere in the wake of his staggering Kilo (PTYT 076CD/LP, 2013) and the much sweeter Konstellaatio side as Ø, which is roughly where its aesthetics also lie. The 50 minute score breaks down to six sections, each exploring the full frequency spectrum of his patented, greyscale tonal palette, largely swerving a fixed rhythmic meter to occupy a weightless, out-of-reach mid-ground that seduces us headlong into his chasmic designs and best suits the black and white film imagery. Key to the recording's appeal - as with most Vainio gear - is that peripheral sense of spatial dynamic and his unpredictable manipulation of amplitude; whether dangling the listener over abyssal sub-bass dimensions, needling with icy prongs, or occasionally alleviating the tension with teasing pads which evaporate back into the æther as though they were never there, ultimately leaving the listener at rapt and at his mercy for the duration. Mastered by Denis Blackham; Cover design by Nullvoid.

Mika Vainio, currently based in Berlin, was one-half of the minimal electronic duo Pan Sonic from Finland, (with Ilpo Väisänen). Before starting Pan Sonic in the beginning of the '90s, Mika Vainio has played electronics and drums as part of the early Finnish industrial and noise scene. His solo works, under his own name and under aliases like Ø, are known for their analog warmth and electronic harshness. Be it abstract drone works or minimal avant techno, Vainio is always creating unique, physical sounds. He has released on other labels such as Editions Mego, Wavetrap and Sähkö, and he has produced work with, amongst others, Alan Vega of Suicide, Keiji Haino, and Bruce Gilbert. Since 2009, Mika Vainio has contributed to the music for Cindy van Acker's dance pieces. This is his fifth album for Touch, after 1998's Onko (TO 034CD), 2000's Kajo, 2004's Sokeiden Maassa Yksisilmäinen on Kuningas (In the Land of the Blind One-Eyed Is King) (TO 054CD) and 2009's Aíneen Musta Puhelin (Black Telephone of Matter) (TO 072CD). FE3O4 - MAGNETITE was recorded in Berlin between 2011 and 2012. In contrast to the dark vistas of his most recent releases, FE3O4 - Magnetite oscillates between the two poles of silence and noise. Using his signature sources which range from radio signals to sine wave generators, Mika Vainio creates a unique emotional journey that moves from the serene to the unsettling, always challenging the listener's comfort zone.

All tracks written by Finnish experimental electronic musician Mika Vainio, except "Open Up And Bleed" by Iggy Pop/James Williamson. Whereas previous works by Mika Vainio have utilized guitar, Life (...It Eats You Up) is the first to use the instrument as its primary sound source. A fascinating, sometimes disturbing and deeply personal work, this new 10 track set bears all the hallmarks (exacting attention to detail of tone, rhythm and texture) of Vainio's previous works with some stunning surprises, such as his cover version of The Stooges' "Open Up And Bleed." Tracks such as "Mining" hark bark to the banging beat excesses of Pan Sonic, in addition to "Crashed" and "And Give Us Our Daily Humiliation" and the opening "In Silence A Scream Takes A Heart" reveals a new intensity to Vainio's work. Yet another superb addition to Vainio's already brilliant catalog.

In the past 13 years, Finnish experimental electronic musician Mika Vainio has exhibited in some of the major art spaces in Europe, and has collaborated with a number of important artists and curators. Since his musical work has been in the focus of attention, his installations have never gained the broader recognition they deserve -- without good reason. In this book, an overview will give a clear outline of this segment of his oeuvre. Also, his realized soundtracks for other artists, in the genres of video, film and dance are included. Each work is presented with a significant selection of images (installation views, visuals or sketches) and an explanatory text gives context and delivers its basic idea. In the two essays, Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Daniela Cascella -- longtime companions and collaborators -- delicately introduce Vainio's conceptions to further enlighten the reader's understanding. On CD1 all tracks originate from the installation and soundtrack pieces presented in the book. CD2 is a reissue of his 1997 collaborative release with Carsten Nicolai -- Ø + Noto, Mikro Makro. 92 pages, color/monochrome. Texts by Daniel Klemm, Daniela Cascella, Carl Michael von Hausswolff.

Finland's Mika Vainio presents his fourth solo album for the Touch label, after Onko (1997), Kajo (2000) and In The Land Of The Blind One-Eyed Is King (2003). He is one-half of Pan Sonic with Ilpo Väisänen, and also records solo as Ø. Vainio's solo works are akin to meditative sound installations -- ruminations on the inner-working heart of machine-made music. Sometimes juxtaposing warm analog sounds with harsher electronics, or isolating and diminishing sounds into ambient gauziness, Vainio is an important technician who has firmly established himself in the cadre of minimal, carefully-sculpted electronics.

Finland's Mika Vainio continues the Touch Sevens 7" vinyl-only limited edition series with an absolute stunner. The crackle and fire of raw analog used as a voice. This series is a non-digital statement that cannot be applied to digital formats -- the sonic texture, the use of a locked groove, the A & the B. The label chose not to specify the RPM, encouraging listeners to experiment with playback options and personal preferences. Artwork and photography by Jon Wozencroft.

"After opening Wavetrap's catalog with his solo album Ydin back in the year 1999, Pan Sonic's Mika Vainio comes back with another offering for the label. Entitled Revitty ('Torn'), the record is as subtle as it is merciless, while remaining deeply musical in Vainio's own unique sense."

"This is Mika Vainio's 3rd solo CD for Touch, after Kajo and Onko. Best known as one-half of Pan Sonic (Blast First), Mika is from Finland and now lives in Berlin. Generally speaking, contemporary musicians produce too much stuff. It is easy to do. But if you feel like sighing, 'Oh, it's another Mika Vainio CD', then Mr Vainio himself has anticipated such sentiments with the opening track, a 2 minute blast which sounds like an angry animal breaking free of its cage. What follows is probably Vainio's most accomplished work to date, a series of rich soundscapes whose beauty is always on the edge of darkness. Not wanting to bang a drum, anyone who has been invigorated by the work of Mika and Ilpo in Pan Sonic will be keen to hear these more pastoral takes on their more propulsive sound -- in places, being reminiscent of Artemyev's recordings for Tarkovsky films, in others, suggesting sound recordings of frogs and insect life. All framed by the distinct touch of Mika Vainio, who confirms his long?standing reputation as one of the most acute musicians of our times."
