TURBO 203EP
|
Turbo Recordings present a release by UK artist Viers, a culmination of a process that would leave virtually anyone else dead or insane. "VLVX Spiral Down" and "Hurt Me" were inspired by the crazy energy of DIY fetish techno parties, which are generally better than corporate-sponsored fetish parties, although Red Bull Leather Academy has done some cool stuff. Meanwhile, "Blow" and "I'm Gonna Get" feature big vocal samples repurposed from Viers's "deep dive" into the history of jungle music. If you enjoy this release, please do us a favor and never use the term "deep dive" again. Just say you've been "bonin' up" or something.

Viers clocks back in on Figure duty, showing up with up for another strong statement of his unmistakably singular style. Here he is working it from all angles: Straight up and searing stoic techno opener "Let My Mind Breath" is grinding away grittily, while things turn surprisingly bouncy, as "Genesis" dishes out electrifying boom-bap-breakbeats, transporting imagery of neo-futuristic Tokyo streets. As night sets in, so does the kinetic groove of "Oyasumi", which twirls layers of energetic movement into a thick current. "Data Entry 4590" provides some soothing ambient tones of melancholic longing, inviting to slowly drift away into white-washed nothingness.

Viers is back with another batch of tunes that again sets him apart from his peers both in production value and creativeness. Touching on the tropes of classic Detroit techno, Jordon Saxton presents a beautifully delicate opening track. It's the mix of this vital momentum together with a certain restraint, allowing each element to breath. The slightest adjustments cause maximum effect, as felt on suitably titled stomper "Nothing Changed", where everything hits in exactly the right place. Same goes for the incessant dialogue of tones on "Zehn", which Sigha expands into a pensive piece, layering soothing washes of synths.

The production powerhouse that is Jordon Saxtonm presents his first outing for Figure as Viers, a strictly no-nonsense techno affair. "Lain" carefully navigates with sonar bleeps and scanner sweeps through of nebula richly detailed textures. "Infornography" is muffled in thick murk, its metallic synths unceasingly chipping away at rocks of rumbling bass. "Re-L" pulses with a beautifully fluorescent and dubbed-out loop, as gentle as it is booming. The militant groove of "Protocol" closes things out on a tough note with hammering kicks and cleverly twisted percussion.

Forward-thinking Leeds-based producer Viers aka Jordon Saxton, part of the new wave of UK house and techno producers, returns to Breach's Naked Naked imprint following five previous releases, including a 12" on Seb Wildblood and Apes's Church imprint. For his third outing on Naked Naked, Saxton delivers another dose of dancefloor-ready techno. "Dissipate" makes use of sparse elements to construct a hypnotic, minimal groove. Skippy hi-hats dance around a solid but simple bassline, creating a bouncy, satisfying energy. The dubby stabs of "SMS" combine with rattling percussion to establish a driving, relentless peak-time rhythm.
