2020 repress. Originally released in 2012 on Kompakt. WhoMadeWho may lack a question mark after their name, but their music will certainly have you asking after them. The Copenhagen based collective is difficult to pin down, but their music sounds as effortless as it is stylistically and sonically adventurous. Having formed in 2003, the genre-bending trio made up of Jeppe Kjellberg, Tomas Høffding, and Tomas Barfod honed their skills on stage and in the studio, releasing a series of bestselling records on Munich based Gomma label and topped off by their Kompakt released 2011 mini album Knee Deep. They remain one of Europe's most cherished live acts -- performing alongside the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, Azari & III they are found as staples of the summer festival circuit with a breakthrough performance in 2011 at the legendary Roskilde festival. It must be said that Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age loves the band so much that he even did a cover of "Space For Rent". WhoMadeWho have truly succeeded on their mission to eschew convention. Fusing pop and disco memes with punk paraphernalia, they released Brighter in 2012. The album operates as the missing link between the radical playfulness of the band's previous full-length The Plot and the introspective focus of Knee Deep, bridging their early work with a newly founded sense of sincerity and musicianship. "The Sun" has already proved itself as a crowd favorite with the band; cocky, bold and catchy this is the hymn that fans new and old will be screaming to over the summer months. "Below The Cherry Moon" submerges the band in pop perfection revealing a matured depth and lyrical brilliance. Other songs on "Brighter" such as "Inside World", the hard-hitting "Never Had The Time" or existentialist groove study "Running Man" feature the accessibility as well as the edginess that describe both ends of the same passion: Jeppe Kjellberg's characteristic vocal hit the pop-nerve in the verses while Tomas Høffding's soft falsetto holds the song together, giving the album its constantly evolving flow. Clearly, the band members never settled for streamlined mediocrity, but keep looking for those dark spots on their own map that demand to be conquered, thus churning out another instant classic that will rule our hearts and minds.

2024 repress; double LP version. Kompakt welcomes back Copenhagen's WhoMadeWho. Tomas Barfod's penchant for electronic music poetically juxtaposed with Tomas Høffding and Jeppe Kjellberg's respective backgrounds in rock and jazz, gives their music an electrifying combination of sounds, merging a variety of influences to produce a unique sonic fingerprint that is emotive, irresistible and immensely satisfying. Though they have yet to strike a note together since the release of their 2012 full length Brighter (KOM 254LP/KOMP 097CD, 2012), WhoMadeWho have been remarkably productive. With two full-lengths, a DJ mix for Watergate's series (WG 026CD), the trio have found themselves diving more and more into the world of electronic music, tapping into their goldmine of connections within the scene to spearhead an array of collaborations. Synchronicity is all about "meaningful coincidences" -- bringing interpretation to bear on connections that have no actual causal relationship. It's a canny concept to pin onto Copenhagen trio WhoMadeWho's latest album, which sees them return to Kompakt for the first time since 2012's Brighter. On Synchronicity, WhoMadeWho call on friends old and new: Michael Mayer, Echonomist, Adana Twins, Alex Boman, Robag Wruhme, Frank Wiedemann, Sainte Vie, Mano Le Tough, Marc Piñol, Rebolledo, and Perel is the cast list; WhoMadeWho direct the material, shaping it into one lovingly flowing gem of dance-pop glory. There's something particularly generous about hearing an album as all-inclusive and open-hearted as Synchronicity in the midst of the profound social and cultural shifts everyone is currently experiencing. While some songs on Synchronicity were recorded together, in real time, such as the collaborations with Adana Twins and Rebolledo, most of them have taken place via long distance, thanks to the pandemic lockdown. But you don't need to know who was where to understand either the magnesium-flare melancholy of "Sooner", recorded with Piñol, which has you holding your breath with the gentle thrill of the song's lush melody, or the stomping strut of the following Adana Twins collaboration, "Shadow Of Doubt". Elsewhere, there's the stentorian robot voice at the heart of "Hamstring", where they're joined by Michael Mayer; the lustrous headsoak of "Twenty Tears", a tender intervention by Rebolledo; the strip-light, slow-motion disco strut of "Cecil", produced alongside Echonomist; or the glittering, arpeggio dreamwork that Perel helps sculpt into shape on "Der Abend Birgt Keine Ruh". From pop revelations to dancefloor delirium to slow-burning brooders, Synchronicity is a space for the joys of the unexpected to collide.

The dynamic trio from Copenhagen, whose music blurs the lines between countless genres, steps up to deliver the next installment in Watergate's mix series. Jeep Kjellberg, Tomas Barford, and Tomas Høffding, better known as WhoMadeWho, have spent the last decade cleverly and expertly traversing an array of genres blending facets spanning from club to rock music. Applying elements of pop, indie, techno, disco, punk, and funk and anything they can imagine, the outfit sets themselves apart from other club music yet, all the while they maintain an underground sensibility making WhoMadeWho the perfect candidate to take the driver seat for Watergate 26. The mix is quintessential WhoMadeWho as they slickly weave their way through a plethora of sounds without missing a beat. From the onset, deep and lush grooves coalesce with moody atmospherics on tracks like Öona Dahl & Dance Spirit's "Break The Stillness" and WhoMadeWho's rework of Magit Cacoon & Lonya's "Shma IL" before slowly edging the intensity up into Artbat's standout edit of WhoMadeWho's "Montserrat" and WhoMadeWho's remix of Concret & Tyu's "BlueBlackYellowGreen" where genres lines begin to blur. As the mix progresses the drama unfolds. Tim Engelhardt's "Under Armour" and Ruede Hagelstein & Justin Evans's "Love Over Pyramids" provide the ideal measure of psychedelia preluding an insanely slick transition into cinematic breakbeats on fellow Copenhagen cohort Kenton Slash Demon's "Arp 8" setting the stage for one of many highlights of the mix; Artbat's "Closer" featuring WhoMadeWho. Moving into the latter half of the 87 minutes the trio dive into headier territories showing their affinity emotive moments with Otto B's "Willy" and their own remix of Alex Schaufel's "The Day Of Rebirth" which cleverly melts into sultry smooth, mesmerizing cuts like dOP's "Radiowaves" and WhoMadeWho & Ruede Hagelstein's exquisite cover of Björk's "Violently Happy" creating a gorgeous entrance for the finale. With a stunning crescendo Speaking Minds & Amarcord's "Blue Days" is a valiantly emotional and epic moment that is only surpassed by the stunning and timeless WhoMadeWho's absolute future classic "Smile" bookending a grand closure to a truly sincere and masterful musical journey. Also features Chaim & Jenia Tarsol, Mathias Schober, Concret & Tyu, Stereocalypse, Clarian, Echonomist, and Otto B.

WhoMadeWho join the ranks of acts like Dixon, Modeselektor, Francesco Tristano, and M.A.N.D.Y. with their mix for Get Physical Music's Body Language series. Audiences might know WhoMadeWho as those three Danish guys who reformatted funk punk with Euro-cowbells in the mid-2000s, and while that's correct, it's also a narrow perspective. Shuffling genres emerging from the postmillennial style-clash is but one of WhoMadeWho's many talents. In any case, the genre-crossing think tank consists of drummer, DJ, and producer Tomas Barfod, singer and bassist Tomas Hoffding aka Bon Homme, and singer and guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg. There is a significant reason for WhoMadeWho's continued activity in the 2010s, when many of their contemporaries, like The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, or Radio 4, have broken up or become inactive. It is their unconditional curiosity toward contemporary club sounds and their approach, often incorporating the functionality of club tracks into their songs, to look further than the edge of the stage, keeping a close eye on and constantly checking the pulse of the dancefloor. Keeping this virtue close to their hearts has already brought them major exposure in sets by Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex, Tale of Us, and many more. And what better way to revive this approach than with a DJ mix? Right from the start, David August's revision of The Acid's "Ra" makes the mix's depth known as it fades into The Invisibles' falsetto meditation "The Stain." From Cubicolor's "Down the Wall," the sound meanders gently toward the club groove as it gains a touch of acid house thanks to Ghost Culture before the indie dance bliss of The Golden Filter and Weval. On the Nick Galemore contribution, in an exclusive remix by WhoMadeWho, the a tapestry of post-rock guitar inches inexorably toward a peak-time bounce. The "Acapella" version of WhoMadeWho's "Wanted Your Love" is perfectly adapted to Luke Abbott's "Modern Driveway" before WhoMadeWho pump up the floor with George FitzGerald's "Your Two Faces." More contemporary club material follows -- DJ Tennis's "Division (feat. Jeppe Kjellberg) (Roman Flügel Remix)," &ME's "Trilogy (feat. Sabota)," and the hypnotic house of Fort Romeau. The whopping Applescal kick drum precedes the WhoMadeWho exclusive, a "Guitarpella" version of the ultra-catchy "High & Low." After this unmistakable highlight, Clark tiptoes in with "Strength Through Fragility" before the mix closes with Nosaj Thing's ambient/bass hybrid "2K" in a deep, worthy culmination of this amorous sound journey through the WhoMadeWho orbit.

Genre-bending Copenhagen trio WhoMadeWho continue their string of acclaimed releases, including their 2005 self-titled debut (GOMMA 060CD), 2012's chart-topping Brighter (KOMP 097CD/KOM 254LP), and 2014's Dreams (DACD 001CD/DALP 001LP), which was touted by many as one of the best things to come from the indie-dance sector of music in some time. No surprise coming from a band that's played and toured alongside the likes of Justice, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, and Hot Chip, who, in 2011, also asked to remix the trio's song "TV Friend" while WhoMadeWho covered "Don't Dance" in return. Other remixers include underground heavy-hitters The Mole, DJ Koze, and Michael Mayer, proving WhoMadeWho's ability to go from mega-stage to basement seamlessly. Ember is another foray into the world of machine music and dreamy soundscapes, in which the band stays true to its pop tendencies while spinning things around and taking a trip right back to its roots. Band member Tomas Barfod, who also produced the release, says, "After many years of emphasizing 'the song' more and more, we felt like just playing around with our instruments, like when we recorded our first album... it was like renewing our band-wedding vows; we found our way back to our fun and free approach of making music together." "Fun" and "free" might very well be two of the best ways to describe this seven-track creation of skewed pop, surf-rock, and slow, meaningful dance music. Beachy guitar licks, ethereal crooning, and enough distinct flavor to set each track apart from the rest, in the dreamy puzzle that is Ember.

2022 repress. Danish trio Tomas Barfod, Tomas Høffding and Jeppe Kjellberg aka WhoMadeWho have paved an illustrious career spanning numerous singles and two acclaimed full-length albums. They have certainly been one of the few acts in the past decade to successfully redefine the term "crossover" in music, thanks to their genre-hopping creative tact. Now, WhoMadeWho team up with Kompakt to bring you this very special release. Following a long tour and still riding on the success of their last full-length The Plot (2009), in early 2010, the trio isolated themselves in several rooms of a semi-built hotel near the harbor of their hometown. The days at the hotel quickly evolved into a musical tour-de-chambre, with ideas being kicked back and forth between the band members working in separate rooms. During the writing process, two musical directions occurred and instead of trying to merge the two, the band decided to record two albums. First up is what we have here -- the mini-album Knee Deep. These tracks clearly show the band's love for electronic music in conjunction with '60s-inspired psychedelic vocal productions. The band has deliberately chosen to save the more melodic and radio-friendly songs for "the second album" though it's obvious that the single "Every Minute Alone" is one of the most brooding and greatest songs you've heard from them. As drummer and electronic handyman Tomas Barfod puts it, the mini-album came from the desire to create "a focused listening album that draws on a more abstract musical starting point." Even from the very first minute of the opening track, it becomes obvious that WhoMadeWho are painting with a darker palette than on previous records. With an intense use of bass clarinet and a forward-driving beat, the song reflects certainty and insecurity in search of answers. Throughout Knee Deep, this uncertainty culminates in the album-closer "We're Alive, It's A Miracle," which comments on not only the album title and thematic development, but also references the band's experiences and challenges which included losing a childhood home to fire, the winding roads of marriage, record label disputes, etc., all which have filled the band's consciousness and forced them to put their career under review. Luckily, they chose the band and the music. Produced by Michael Mayer. The download included with this vinyl mini-album includes five bonus tracks including remixes by Michael Mayer, Tomboy, Spleen United and Renaissance Man.

"Another new band that has a very own, fresh sound: WhoMadeWho from Denmark, a trio that plays disco. Not connecting it with (post) punk and new wave like so many other bands right now -- here the influences come from a wider range of music: from surf to folk to funk to pop... with a big dose of Italo-disco. But without being cheesy."
