Bassekou Kouyaté, the genius and undisputed master of the N'goni, is the man who gave this ancient instrument all its noble notes and made it shine on international stages with the greatest musicians, such as Carlos Santana, U2, Taj Mahal, and more. One of the true masters of the n'goni, an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa, he is a virtuoso, innovator and stronghold of tradition all at the same time. He has collaborated with many musicians in Mali and beyond: he has shared the stage with the likes of Youssou N'Dour, Ali Farka Toure, Bela Fleck, The Kronos Quartet, Taj Mahal, Eliades Ochoa, Damon Albarn, and Michael League. He was one of the key musicians on Ali Farka Toure's posthumous album Savane, released in July 2006. He played in the Symmetric trio with Toumani Diabate and was part of Taj Mahal's Kulanjan project. He won several BBC awards for his celebrated debut album Segu Blue, was Grammy-nominated for the follow-up I speak fula and played hundreds of concerts across the globe, sharing the stage with everyone from Paul McCartney to John Paul Jones and Bono. The album Djudjon, L'oiseau de Garaná is centered around Bassekou Kouyate's adventurous life journey with his wife, singer Amy Sacko.
