This is the sixth album by Circulasione Totale Orchestra. CTO has been going since 1984 with various members, but a couple of years ago, founding member Norwegian saxophonist Frode Gjerstad hand-picked a new band with musicians that have meant something special to him during his long career, as well as some young guns. This release is comprised of a great recording of them at the Molde International Jazz Festival in 2008, together with recordings from some European festivals. The general idea behind the band is that younger, local musicians can come together with more seasoned international players and learn something from the experience. Frode Gjerstad (leader, sax and clarinet) is a legendary Norwegian musician that has worked with improvised music for 40 years, releasing around 60 albums. Louis Moholo-Moholo (drums) is a living legend, and one of South Africa's premier musicians. He has played with Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy, Keith Tippett, Archie Shepp, Evan Parker, and countless others. Morten J. Olsen (drums and electronics) is a member of MoHa! and Ultralyd. Anders Hana (electric guitar) is a member of MoHa!, Ultralyd and Noxagt. Nick Stephens (bass) has played for several years with John Stevens, and also with Dudu Pukwana and Louis Moholo-Moholo. Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) plays with numerous projects, including the Frode Gjerstad Trio. Ingebrigt Haaker Flaten (bass) has played with everyone from Peter Brötzmann to Joe Lovano, and is a member of The Thing, Atomic and Scorch Trio. Børre Mølstad (tuba and electronics) studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Sabir Mateen (sax, clarinet and flute) has played with Cecil Taylor, Hamid Drake, William Parker, and a host of other greats. Kevin Norton (vibraphone) has played with Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, John Zorn, and many others. Bobby Bradford (cornet) played with Ornette Coleman in his pre-recording days in the early '60s and later with several jazz greats. Lasse Marhaug (electronics) is the godfather of Norwegian noise, covering a wide range, from hardcore noise and black metal to free, acoustic improvisation. Per Zanussi (bass) has played with Marilyn Crispell, Jon Christensen, Håvard Wiik, and many others. Hamid Drake (drums) is influenced by percussion music from around the world and is an explorer of early forms of drumming. He has played with William Parker, Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Wayne Shorter, and Ken Vandermark, to name but a few. Bandwidth is a celebration of free improvised music that comes with the highest credentials.
