Mothers of All
is
Mark Gomes
' second album as
Blue Chemise
for Students of Decay, following 2018's acclaimed
Daughters of Time
. Though built from very different materials, it shares its predecessor's economy, sense of proportion, and fascination with the ways domestic life can open onto larger and less easily defined realms. Where
Daughters of Time
evoked tender, if alien, nursery songs,
Mothers of All
takes the form of spectral salon music heard at a temporal and geographic remove. These pieces feel fundamentally receptive, with Gomes allowing his chosen fragments to retain their own histories -- both personal and aesthetic -- while revealing unexpected tonal relationships through their idiosyncratic arrangement. The resulting music is at once deeply personal and strangely unmoored, a space where the intimate and the distant occupy the same plane. What lingers about this project as a whole is the paradox that the most private experiences can also be the least singular: that family, memory, and devotion become most legible at the point where they cease belonging to any one life.
