Tim Linghaus presents Memory Sketches.
"... the German composer creates luminous ambiences evoking feelings of wonder, moments of reflection/contemplation and also passing melancholy. Each window into this world leaves the listener yearning for another glimpse. Fans of Nils Frahm, Julien Marchal and Mike Lazarev will love all these sound" --Headphone Commute
"Linghaus' graceful piano lines possess the same restrained, melancholic cadence of Satie's Gymnopédies while resonant strings provide the narrative and emotional exposition to potent effect. Lovely as the music is on its own, it is immeasurably enhanced by impeccably crafted ambient and textural elements which create for the listener the illusion of being the unseen, quiet observer in each of the changing scenes. It may be short, but Vhoir (2016) is a pure balm for the ears." --Stationary Travels

Akira Kosemura's In The Dark Woods combines the electronic and acoustic sounds of piano, Wurlitzer, and synthesizer with a string quartet, similar to the music heard on his previous improvisational solo piano work One Day from 2016. As indicated in the title, the entire album is filled with an obscure darkness and a world of misty sounds ever to be feared of, like a comfortable quietness in the dark where a child in the womb is hearing a mother's heartbeat. As the music goes on, it gradually begins to widen an introspective worldview. The combined sounds of repeated phrases, as seen in minimal music, a sophisticated crossover sound between acoustics and electronics, and an improvisational solo piano present a worldview suggestive of a broader theme, such as the circulation of life or the law of nature. The highlights on the album, "In The Dark Woods" and its variations "Letter From A Distance", will leave listeners with deep emotions and afterglow. In The Dark Woods is released by 1631 Recordings and Schole Records.

Dirk Maassen is a German composer and pianist who took up piano at the age of ten. In the 1980s, he performed in several bands and projects and started some experimental cross genre productions where he experimented with different styles. During the '90s, Dirk toured and released two albums with his band In Contact and also worked on his side project Unknown Vision. He returned to solo piano in 2011, which is according to him the most immediate instrument to materialize ideas and feelings into something that can resonate with an audience. Dirk has become one of the world's most revered piano composers and has gained a huge following. His compositions have touched millions of listeners worldwide and have been featured in several film projects, including the award-winning short film Crossroads at the Cannes Film festival in 2015.

Compared with the likes of Michael Nyman, Max Richter, Dustin O'Halloran, and Nils Frahm, Sophie Hutchings has garnered much critical praise worldwide, including MOJO Magazine declaring her work as "stirring, vigorous, [and] grandly melodic." Sophie's compositions move from the disarmingly spare and elegant to the romantic and epic, managing to be both unfussed and exquisite and in a constant state of creative evolution. Sophie has released four albums, with 2016's Wide Asleep (PRE 039CD/LP) being listed in the top 30 for The Australian Music Prize. She was also nominated in the top five live instrumentalists of the year for the National Live Music Awards. Hutchings has proven a striking live presence in Australia and Japan either solo or accompanied. With her streaming audience stealthily growing and her work gaining attention at a rapid pace, she is finding new fans - most notably in the neo-classical and ambient genre abroad. Her popularity is growing exponentially in the UK and Europe, allowing Hutchings's music to reach further than ever before.

Ceeys, the instrumental duo of Potsdam-based brothers Sebastian and Daniel Selke, perform an impressive hybrid of principally cello and piano, but also authentic electronic instruments from East Germany. The tracks on Concrete Fields present a sensitive array of nebulous melancholy moods, combining fragile cello-piano units, creeping synth pads, vivid field recordings, and fragmentary beats. Some tracks start with sparingly-arranged intros before developing into a tentative melody line. Other tracks simply concentrate on the sublime relationship between cello and piano. Deepening the exploration of the brothers' childhood in East Berlin and the interplay of their instruments, a particularly special feature is the use of some original restored electronic instruments made by famous GDR-based company Vermona back in the '70s and '80s. "Rueber" features Martyn Heyne.

No one should be too surprised to see a collection of acoustic piano pieces being issued by 1631 Recordings. After all, one of the label's co-founders is David Wenngren (Mattias Nilsson of Kning Disk label being the other co-founder), who's been making memorable music under the Library Tapes alias for more than a decade, much of it piano-based. Wenngren contributes a fine Library Tapes piece, "Running By The Roads, Running By The Fields", to the compilation, as do an impressive number of kindred spirits: Nils Frahm, Peter Broderick, Hior Chronik, and Schole main man Akira Kosemura among them. Also features: Fabrizio Paterlini, Joep Beving, Oskar Schuster, Dmitry Evgrafov, Anna Rose Carter, Stray Ghost, Matt Stewart-Evans, Lucy Claire, Heinali, Alice Baldwin, Endless Melancholy, Gabriela Parra, Daigo Hanada, Paddy Mulcahy and Benjamin Gustafsson.

Kinbrae is the musical project of twin brothers Andy and Mike Truscott, who grew up in the countryside of Fife and are now based in Edinburgh and Dundee, Scotland. Kinbrae take their influence from minimalist, classical and ambient music. Inspired by the remote Isle of Coll in Scotland, Tidal Patterns is an album that explores remoteness, seclusion and the feelings that these can evoke. The album makes use of the unique sounds that can be heard on the island, gathered through field recordings depicting the wildlife, culture and ambience of the remote region. These field recordings have been complemented by rich orchestral scores. From a starting point of piano and brass, the brothers have augmented their arrangements to include a range of instruments including strings, synthesizers, kalimbas and various other instruments.

Bruno Sanfilippo is a classically trained musician and composer who has been creating music for more than 20 years. He has performed live & multimedia events at different stages and festivals. Live performances usually consist of performing improvisations on piano and strings. "Simple and elegant, mesmerizing and haunting. I absolutely love turning up the volume, and letting every hypnotic and melancholic note weep gently through the night. For the lovers of Max Richter, Eluvium, Rafael Anton Irisarri, and Zbig-niew Preisner. I highly recommended this gem!" - Headphone Commute

Iskra String Quartet is a collaborative group of string players who enjoy making music together regardless of genre. Ivo Stankov (violin), James Underwood (violin), Sarah Chapman (viola), and Charlotte Eksteen (cello) have travelled extensively across Europe with Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, performing at various prestigious concert halls and festivals, including "Different Trains: Steve Reich at 75" at the Barbican in London and Cork Opera House in Ireland. A highlight includes performances of The Miners' Hymns (2010), a collaboration with American artist and filmmaker Bill Morrison. Iskra has also enjoyed working closely with pianist and composer Ólafur Arnalds. A concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and a European tour led to an invitation to perform at the sold-out launch of Arnalds's 2013 album For Now I Am Winter (Mercury Classics) at the Barbican, accompanied by the Britten Sinfonia conducted by André de Ridder. The quartet's work with producer Jamie xx featured on the number-one best-selling album by The xx, Coexist (Young Turks, 2012). In 2015, Iskra contributed strings to Jamie xx's score for Tree of Codes, a ballet created with choreographer Wayne McGregor and visual artist Olafur Eliasson for the Manchester International Festival. Iskra's collaborations with composer Alex Baranowski have featured on the soundtrack to Jacqui and David Morris's 2012 two-time BAFTA-nominated film McCullin and in Sir Nicholas Hytner's production of Hamlet at the National Theatre in London starring Rory Kinnear. In 2007 Iskra were commissioned by Radiohead and XL Recordings to create a string quartet remix of Radiohead's "Reckoner" as part of the promotion of Radiohead's 2007 album In Rainbows. Other highlights include collaborations with artists such as Vampire Weekend, Sufjan Stevens, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Katie Melua, Duke Special, My Brightest Diamond, and composers Dustin O'Halloran and David Julyan. In May 2015, Iskra performed as a trio alongside The Lone Bellow on the BBC Two TV show Later... with Jools Holland. Iskra includes compositions by Peter Gregson, David Julyan, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Alex Baranowski, Isobel Waller-Bridge, Ólafur Arnalds, Luke Anthony, and Paul Frith, and musical contributions from Gregson (cello), Baranowski (piano), and Christina McMaster (piano).
