The Air Texture series asks two producers/performers to provide a selection of unreleased music. The only guidance is the music should not be main floor bangers; other than that, the label gets out of the way, allowing them autonomy over their selection. For Air Texture Volume VI, Steffi and Martyn were asked to step up. Exciting, since as residents at Berghain/Panorama Bar, two of the most important dancefloors in the world -- how would two such respected artists approach our experimental ethos? Bringing together contributions from veteran producers such as Total Science, As One (Kirk Degiorgio) and Stingray, as well as contemporaries Actress, V.I.V.E.K. and Shed, the artists explain in a press release that the selected tracks are all "unique interpretations of a leftfield, non-linear aesthetic". The Air Texture series returns for its annual event where two producers are asked to select a CD each of more experimental electronic music for combined release. Air Texture invited Steve Hauschildt and BNJMN to make the selections for the fourth volume, and the artists here present a thoughtful survey of new electronic, modern classical, noise, ambient and synth-based music. Steve Hauschildt is an American electronic musician and founding member of the band Emeralds based in Ohio, with releases on Kranky and Editions Mego. Steve has collaborated with Oneohtrix Point Never, sound designer/composer Alan Howarth, Lusine, and others. A compelling leftfield and dance music producer, BNJMN (Ben Thomas) hails from the shores of England's Bournemouth, now based on the digital shores of Berlin. BNJMN has released music on Rush Hour, Delsin, Ninja Tune's Technicolour, and Astro:Dynamics. Collaborations include Opal Tapes man Best Available Technology. Ambient today isn't so much about psychedelics or chilling out as it is presenting the melodic or beatless fabric of dance music. Stripped of prevalent rhythm, songs tend toward melodic composition and detail. These songs may become "compositional" as individuals express themselves with technology under focused or emotive ideals.
