AVOTRE 019EP
|
Avotre boss Santé opens this EP with "Dusty Roads," a grainy, lo-fi house jam with free-wheeling synths, firm kicks, and expert hi-hats. Butch delivers a remix more techy in nature, with forceful snares, kinetic percussion, and an upwardly mobile drum line. DJ Hell's remix is an electro-fried cut with frazzled synths, stuttering bass, and paranoid, droning synths -- a perfectly intense and heady trip. Santé's "Never Enough" is a deep, inviting, loopy number with carefully exploding melodies and tons of sonic detail. Emanuel Satie goes for a barreling, full-throttle remix with fat drums, vocal stabs, and rattling percussion.

Since emerging in 2011, German producer Sidney Charles's full, fat, chunky house offerings have become staples in DJ sets. "Psyjack," the second album single following his retrospective full-length House Lessons album (AV 002CD, 2015), is a full-blooded bit of jacking house with tough drums, icy hi-hat loops, and rib-rattling bass that thumps out a sweaty groove while tripped-out melodic breakdowns offer intricate musical moments. I'm a House Gangster label boss and Chicago house pioneer DJ Sneak's remix is pricklier and hypnotically loopy. Raw house guaranteed to make dancefloors sweat, with vocal stabs; barreling kick drums; loose, DIY-sounding percussion; and shooting synth lines.

House Lessons collects Hamburg producer Sidney Charles's finest moments along with a selection of previously unreleased tracks, taking in originals, remixes, and collaborations with Avotre founder Santé, Pan-Pot, Hot Since 82, Patrick Topping, Hector Moralez, and Kalyde. Charles has become one of the most charted artists on Resident Advisor thanks to his consistently killer and infectious tracks on labels like Hot Creations, I'm a House Gangster, and Moda Black. He's held down resident duties at Sankeys Ibiza, and those DJ experiences clearly inform his groovy, bass-driven productions. House Lessons offers a 360-degree view of modern house music, from the bumpy, vibe-setting opener to the bouncy, shuffling garage inflections of "Drama" and the jacking Darius Syrossian remix of "Housin tha Rave." Mixed perfectly tight and always following an increasingly energetic narrative arc, the mix then takes in full-on retro rave stabs, slick and sliding tech house from masters of the form Luna City Express, and then dips into deeper, more bubbling, and New York-influenced house music. Midway through the mix and fully settled into an inviting groove, unhinged and playful originals like "Nuts," "Psyjack," and "Horny" sandwich raw tech from Patrick Topping and face-melting bangers from Pan-Pot as remixed by Sidney himself. The latter half of the mix keeps up the pressure and features shadowy, no-nonsense collaborative tracks by Santé and Sidney as well as dynamic and techno-leaning solo gems like "Silky Thread" and the whacked-out post-dubstep rhythms of closer "Disco Nap." This mix not only proves Sidney to be a fine DJ who can really tell a story, but also showcases the breadth and quality of his impressive discography to date.

AVOTRE 013EP

Sante's new EP, in anticipation of his much-awaited album Current, is an emotive, textured and subtle journey through the deeper shades of house and techno. Hypnotic keys and melancholic vocals are layered over a rolling, groove-based percussion. Sante flew over to London especially to work with J.U.D.G.E., and the singer's warm vocals work perfectly alongside the beat. The B-side is a rare treat, a remix from techno heavyweight Agoria. The French master gives the track a progressive rework, with a rousing synth pattern and crisp kick drums. These two tracks complement each other impeccably, both on the dancefloor and in the living room.

It is said that an artist's first collection of work is a self-portrait -- a surreptitious sonic glimpse into their life and soul, delving deeper than even the most intimate DJ set. Current, Santé's debut album, is certainly no exception, as he invites and entices the listener into discovering what lies beneath the surface of this enigmatic and energetic DJ and producer. As the Berlin-based maestro's own persona grows in both popularity and notoriety, and his budding AVOTRE label goes from strength to strength, the timing couldn't be better for Santé to release his sophomore LP. Over 10 future-facing tracks, Santé displays a deft production skill that manages to surpass even his reputation for raising a dancefloor. The album is rich in styles and genres, from honest, melody-drenched cuts, such as title-track "Intimacy," to heavier club rollers like "Momentary," and the decadent, groove-infused "Tongue." Tracks such as "Turn Up," which features vocals from Russoul, show him deftly straddling the genres of jacking house and emotive melody. All are infused with a continuous and engaging sense of rhythm, which sees Santé weave a consistent, compelling narrative through the record. Santé is a team player -- as anyone will know who has ever caught one of his electrifying back-to-back sets with fellow AVOTRE label-mate Sidney Charles. Here we see him continue to expose his chameleonic abilities as he teams up with a number of other talents for this full-length debut, including Russoul, J.U.D.G.E. and Steve Smith (from Dirty Vegas). The album wraps up with one bonus cut of the elegiac "Awake," by heavyweight techno legend Agoria. The best music always tugs at the heartstrings, and this remix is a true example, aligning hypnotic keys with melancholic vocals. This low-key finale personifies Santé's, and Current's insistence in never compromising on quality. Current is a deep insight into the artistry and imagination of a talented producer and represents an important chapter in Santé's ever-growing career.
