Two percussionists, Sven Kacirek and Thomas Klein present Rhythmus I-IV. Although the two musicians each speak their own distinct rhythmic language, with only a few data transfers between Hamburg and Düsseldorf they have conjured up four compact tracks, which despite the instrumental limitations, are surprisingly diverse in terms of sound, groove and depth. Each sent the other a sketch for further development and expanded upon these blueprints. In a final meeting, formal decisions and minimal corrections were made. In addition to drums, cymbals, shakers, xylophone and vibraphone sounds, sonic treatments are clearly audible.

Zero Set (BB 037CD/LP) was a milestone in latter-day krautrock, created in 1983 by a hugely authoritative triumvirate of the German avant-garde: Dieter Moebius, Conny Plank, and Mani Neumeier. Richard Fearless delivers two remixes of outstanding album opener "Speed Display." On the A-side he grafts rhythmic patterns onto a four-to-the-floor beat and compelling bass signature. Feedback, echoing voices, a sprinkling of synth -- only the most essential elements, none of which risks overloading the mix. On the B-side, he plucks just a few notes from the bassline and crafts a fine slice of hypnotic electro-dub with minor chord echoes.

Muffled hammering grows rhythmical. An uncarpeted snare joins in, clicks and clacks, babbling, racing. Automat and Max Loderbauer open proceedings on Bureau B's Selekt label quite masterfully with an auspicious four-track EP: Verstärker/Hall/Kompressor/Echo. Automat, busy recording their second album, came across Max Loderbauer in the neighboring studio. They got along swimmingly and started working together straight away. "Everything played live, no overdubs," as Automat's bass player Georg Zeitblom confirms -- first take, no shake. The studio was stripped down to basics. No computers: a tape machine, guitar amplifier, analog EQs, rehearsal space. "Re-rewind, the crowd say Bo Selekter!"
