"The memory of the legendary player, Lapp-Nils, Nils Jonsson (1804-1870), was still very much alive in the province of Jamtland at the beginning of the fifties. This Matts Arnberg realized when he undertook a fourteen-day recording expedition in Jamtland for the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation in 1951. In this selection of 47 tunes, eight of the most outstanding players are heard: two diddlers, one clarinetist and five fiddlers, namely Erik Axel Nasstrom, Alanas and Mans Olsson, Mattmar, Eric Nilsson, Mattmar, and the fiddlers Nestor Lofstrom and Anders Martensson, Strom, Olle Falk and Per Viktor Rost from Offerdal, and Bengt Bixo , Morsil. The melodies have been written down and collected in many different variants, both in Jamtland and outside the province, and also on the Norwegian side of the border. Some of the polskas and marches go back to the earlier eighteenth century. The style of its tone language is confident and a strong awareness of tradition is here given expression."

"Another CD with music from one of Europe's last 'unexplored regions' on the musical map. Here we get to meet one of Macedonia's most popular groups in the vanguard for the modernized folk music, Synthesis, but also one of the many local groups that fondly cherish the tradition, Kirka. Goran Alachki, perhaps the foremost accordionist is featured, as is one of the many fantastic wind orchestras, Orkestar Ace."

Subtitled: Minorities From The Central Highland And Coast. "Vietnam is a wonderfully rich country -- from a musical perspective! Here, on Music from Vietnam Vol. 5, one has for the first time the chance to become acquainted with music from nine of the more than fifty minorities living in the country. The recordings were made using a modern mobile digital studio in the central hills and on the coast of Vietnam, doing justice to a wholly unique and exciting world of timbres, a world that has lived its own life for hundreds of years and now is available to interested ears. They sing and play on drums, flutes, horns, rattles, bamboo, porcelain, and above all on gongs, handed down for generations. In a world where the wheels of communication spin ever faster, these peoples maintain and develop their cultural identities and their music. Meet Cham, Raglai, Bahnar, Xo-dang, and Giarai, and revel in their music from rites and religious ceremonies, work, and celebrations."

1995 release. "Vietnam's long history at the point of intersection between different political and cultural spheres is reflected by the large number of minorities living in different parts of the country, especially in the highlands to the north and west. Today, these regions present an extraordinary linguistic and cultural mosaic of immense variety. The present CD is a sample from that copious treasury, most of which, regrettably, has yet to be documented. The contents include a number of examples of the fantastic rhythmic music played on tuned gongs by the E De people in the central highlands, as well as other exciting instrumental and vocal instruments."

"A large church organ with an infinite number of celestial sounds, colours, and moods; a nyckelharpa, this genuinely Swedish folk instrument, as if sprung from the earth -- an old being in itself. These instruments, played by two of our foremost conjurors of the instruments in question, in a wild but tender dance where earth meets sky, the ancient meets the brand new, and hardship meets joy. The prominent conjurors in question are of course the nyckelharpa player Johan Hedin and the organ virtuoso Gunnar Idenstam, and this album, Latar II, is the duo's second -- their first album was released in 2004, also on the Caprice label -- and is yet another innovative mixture of old Swedish folk tunes and newly written material. Their music is rooted in Swedish folk music but feels brand new, as the music is created and shaped in the encounter between these two innovators; it twists and turns along mysterious paths, dresses up in symphonic clothing, invokes sacred moods, swirls about in danceable polskas, and sings its lyrical melodies. In short, it is an invitation into a fantastic new world, or as the BBC writer Fiona Talkington writes in the album's liner notes, 'So step into this world of gothic shadows, baroque elegance, fiery furnaces and frozen summits, broken hearts and laughter, of tunes which were hummed by our grandparents, of sounds which they would flee from, but most of all give yourself up wholeheartedly to this inspired creation and dance and weep along the way.'"

1996 release. Artists: Dim Abilo Ensemble; Holy Rosary Church Choir; Bernard Kabanda Ssalongo, vocals & guitar; Kazana Vizana Ensemble. "Development and change -- parallel to the preservation of traditions -- have always been a characteristic of living folk music. Uganda, of course, and its fantastic treasury of musical cultures are no exception. This record presents a few samples of music originating from recent decades, but deeply rooted in popular tradition, hence the rather paradoxical heading!"

"In the mind of a Vietnamese listener, spoiled for choice with the country's infinite wealth of musical forms and traditions, music from the imperial city of Hue has a very special place. This music is known and loved for its distinctive melodic beauty, with a typical dash of melancholy. Many believe that the origins of its particular charm are to be found in the cultural dominance of the Hindu kingdom of Champa for many centuries before and after 1000 A.D."

"When three of Sweden´s leading folk musicians join together with traditional instruments and rhythms, but combine this with a modern sound and a lot of attitude, you can be sure that the result will be something extra special. Acoustic music, but with a heaviness that sometimes approaches that of rock. Folk music, music that evolves in harmony with the times and the players. Folk music for the twenty-first century. Boot is made up of Hållbus Totte Mattsson (traditional lute, baroque lute), Ola Bäckström (fiddle, bouzouki) and Samuel Andersson (percussion, string drum, octave fiddle), three experienced folk musicians who have the tradition in their backbones but the possibilities for development and curiosity in their hands and brains. Boot started out as back-up players for the dance group Virvla and was nominated for a Grammy for a joint disc in the year 2000. Now it is time for a real comeback. Hållbus Totte Mattsson has a background in groups such as Groupa and Hedningarna. Ola Bäckström is a fiddler at heart, a top player of Dalecarlian tunes with several impressive solo records under his belt. He has also played with Den Fule and Swåp. Samuel Andersson is one of the most exciting folk musicians of the younger generation and plays in bands such as Hedningarna, Godrun and his own solo project Looptok. Boot has a broad range of sound, from the ethereal and beautiful to the dark, pounding, gnarled and surly polskas. Boot creates music that is definitely the trio´s very own."

"This recording gives rich samples of the sounds of tradition in urban musical life in Ethiopia today. The ancient ceremonial music played on the embilta flutes or the vocal art of Alemayehu Fanta or Gebre Hiwot Lemma represent older traditions. The group Sne Bahel offers samples of singing and music which accompanies lively traditional dances from the Oromo and Wollaita ethnic groups. Modern pop music is represented in six tracks by the Abyssinia Band." "The diversity and quality of music featured is very impressive" -- Dirty Linen 1994. Artists: Gebre Hiwot Lema, vocals, masinko; Abyssinia Band; Yohannes Afework, washint flute; Asnakech Worku, vocals; Areru Shegane, embilta flute; Teka Tema, embilta flute; Yohannes Afework, embilta flute; Yared Orchestra; Alemayehu Fanta, vocals; Sne Bahel-Ensemble.

"In 1989, author and Sinologist Cecilia Lindqvist taught Sweden to see the magic of the written Chinese language with the August Award winning book China: Empire of Living Symbols. Now she is going to make us hear the magic of the Chinese instrument qin. In collaboration with Caprice Records, she has produced the CD Qin. In the spring of 2009, Cecilia went on a unique tour for Concerts Sweden with two Chinese musicians. The result was crowded concert halls and a large number of CDs sold. In the CD booklet, Cecilia Lindqvist tells the story of the magic instrument. The meditative music is performed by two skilled musicians from China -- Deng Hong, playing qin, and Chen Shasha, playing a bamboo flute called xiao and an ocarina called xun. Qin (pronounced 'chin') is a quiet instrument, best suited to be played in solitude or with a good friend who follows the melody on flute. The instrument is difficult to play, and one problem for new beginners is that there is no sheet music of the kind we are used to. The seven strings are made of tightly thrown silk. To obtain the durable silk threads required for the strings, the silkworms are fed a special leaf from the zhe-tree. Qin music is normally not performed in public, which makes the Swedish tour very special. Throughout history, the instrument has been regarded with immense reverence and celebrated in countless poems. From the mid 1960s and decades onwards, qin was considered too elitist in China, but today the instrument is advancing strongly and has reclaimed its role as its country's foremost national instrument. A few years ago, it was included in UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The musicians, Deng Hong and Chen Shasha, were both educated at the Academy of Music in Beijing and are currently employed by the world famous Chinese National Orchestra."

2003 release. Performed by: Sara Hammarström, flutes; George Kentros, violin; Mats Olofsson, cello; Marten Landström, piano. "The peärls before swïne experience take new music out of its traditional milieu with great intensity and a newly written repertoire. They commission short pieces and work in close contact with some of the best young composers from Sweden and abroad. Their setting is actually that of a 19th century salon orchestra, but they instead put their energy towards creating a totally new attitude towards modern music. Now, the 'swïne,' Sara Hammarström (flutes), George Kentros (violin), Mats Olofsson (cello), and Mårten Landström (piano), have released a new CD called swïne live! This time, they wanted to make a 'live' CD that captures some of the feeling of their concerts. To help, they engaged one of Sweden's true pioneers of electroacoustic music, Sten Hanson, to rework the audience sounds between works - a typical groundbreaking collaboration. On this CD, the peärls before swïne experience perform new works by David Lang, Mårten Josjö, Per Mårtensson, André Chini, Annie Gosfield, Anders Hillborg, Tristan Murail, Mikael Edlund, and S. Pat. Simmerud."
