XXXXXX 001EP

Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott are Millie & Andrea, returning here with their first new material in four years, pre-empting the long-delayed release of their debut album for Modern Love. This one-sided pressing features non-album cut "Stage 2," an Andrea production straddling delirious trap signatures pushed into the red with a fuckload of found sounds squashed into the mix. We'd say it's a taster of the album but, in all honesty, it sounds nothing like anything that's on there.

After a bit of a pause, Andrea returns with an invigorated sense of funk and a bad case of scuffed shell toes. "Retail Juke" opens up with an impatient metronome and sparkling Rhodes keys ushering in spasmodic sample edits and unregimented drums, honing that slow-fast thing that's so bizarrely effective. "Write-Off" sounds like an ice cream van taking a wrong turn and ending up wheel-deep in some hyperrealist dayglo forest. Still, it's quite melancholy in its own fidgety way.

Andrea heads out on her own for the first time after a trio of 12"s as one-half of Millie and Andrea. "You Still Got Me" plays on Andrea's love of classic rave structures, squaring off with rugged, hardcore edits and low-end rumbles offset by big house vocals and blue strings. "Got To Forget" unravels around a ghostly vocal and dismembered percussive sequence that opens up to display a whole array of twilight keys and the warmest, most padded bass-line imaginable.

This is the fourth release on the Daphne label, here to balance out ruffage with a bit of a feminine touch. The A-side comes to you courtesy of Millie, re-imagining a Shake-style funk jam with toughened percussion and padded low-end. Over on the flipside, Andrea rewinds spectral synths in a tweaked and heavy R&B style. Limited copies only.
