"Fat Possum presents R.L. Burnside's First Recordings on vinyl. Originally released in 2003. These astounding recordings started R.L. Burnside's career. The intensity of these songs foretells well the power of his great records to come. The songs on First Recordings capture Burnside at his home in 1968, when he was farming for a living and only playing for family and friends. R.L. Burnside is one of the most important figures in modern blues. Whether it's playing live, stripped down acoustic, electronica, electronica remixes or raw electric, R.L. music is the definition of Hill Country Blues."

"A beautifully packaged edition of Junior Kimbrough's first album, recorded live in the converted church that replaced Kimbrough's original wooden shack juke joint. The lineup is Kimbrough on vocals and guitar, Garry Burnside on bass, and Kenny Malone on drums (it's a family business around this area, and you'll find Burnsides and Malones all over Fat Possum's releases). All Night Long is a big, scruffy racket of an electric blues album, and it's fantastic material, a mix of charging, biting rhythms, intense slow blues, hollerin', stompin' and moanin'. The lack of studio polish is a big plus here -- producer Robert Palmer was absolutely right to give this to us flubs and all -- and the energy is wonderful. A great electric blues portrait that's getting widespread attention at last -- and deserves it all." --AllMusic

Double gatefold. "You Better Run is the first career-spanning collection by Junior Kimbrough, one of the most influential and original blues players in the past 50 years. Hailed by U2's Bono and Iggy Pop as a primal force in blues music, Junior never reached the mass audience that he deserved while alive, but his music endures, and continues to be discovered by music fans from all walks of life." "The music is dark and vibrant, the sex nasty, the nights late and messy, and women not to be trusted." --Arion Berger, Rolling Stone

"Originally released in 1968 For The Sake of The Song is a re-issue of Townes' well-known debut album. Produced by Jack Clement (Charley Pride, Chet Atkins, U2, etc.) and featuring original liner notes by Mickey Newbury, Townes Van Zandt went on to cement his status a cult icon among gifted song writers such as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Emmylou Harris who eventually recorded their own covers of Townes' songs."

"By the time of 1974's Al Green Explores Your Mind, this version of the Memphis sound was the production style for only a handful of artists. Producer Willie Mitchell used a lighter touch for his most famous artist, and it's all but crafted into the Al Green sound. Despite his skills, Green never falls into mannerism here and gives heartfelt and cogent vocals rooted in intelligence and technique. 'Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy),' although lyrically slight, has the artist's charisma and Mitchell's pop chops. 'Take Me to the River,' with perfect backing from Hi Rhythm and a horn and string arrangement, finds Green at his most persuasive. The last track, 'School Days,' has Green longing for a school girlfriend and despite the potentially sappy sentiment, it works like a charm. The greatness of Al Green Explores Your Mind comes from a collective effort, including James Mitchell's dreamlike string arrangements and the always skilled backing vocals of Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes. But the biggest draw here is Green's phrasing and intimate vocals, making the record an extremely strong effort." --AllMusic

"For the first time ever, Townes Van Zandt's Grammy-nominated posthumous 1999 release A Far Cry From Dead will see a vinyl release. Van Zandt recorded the vocal and guitar takes for the album from the late '80s through the early '90s at Texhoma Music Group Studio, the late singer's next door neighbor's home studio in Nashville, and Jack Clement's Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa. Townes left the tapes to his widow, Jeanene Van Zandt, who worked with producer Eric Paul to bring the songs to life with a full band including guitarist Richard Bennet (Mark Knopfler, Billy Joel, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell), percussionist Kenny Malone (Ray Charles, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, etc.), and Charlie McCoy (Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings) among others."

"From the opening lullaby of 'A Perfect Miracle' through to the Morse Code fadeout at the close of 'Sail on Through,' Spiritualized wrap layer upon layer of gloriously transcendent sound together to create a mesmerizing and cinematic collection of songs. There are points where the waves of blissful noise are almost overwhelming the thunderous climax of 'On the Sunshine'; the spectral waltz of 'The Prize'; the towering guitar solo on 'I'm Your Man' where one can imagine the studio's speakers vibrating themselves off of the walls. Which is an incredible feat when you discover that the album was conceived and recorded almost entirely by one man Jason Pierce, AKA J.Spaceman in an upstairs room in his east London home . . . Whereas bedroom recording is commonplace for a generation of musicians who've grown up with horizon-expanding tech, Spiritualized have long used the studio as they would an extra member of the band as a vital building block in the construction of some of the most cherished records of the modern era. This time would be very different. With no grounding in digital recording, Jason had to learn everything from scratch. For the listener, the nine tracks on And Nothing Hurt effortlessly replicate the scale and power of Spiritualized's previous releases, whether it's the sonic blowback of 'On the Sunshine,' the last dime in the jukebox love letter of 'Let's Dance' or the swell of an imaginary orchestra that seems to lift 'Damaged' towards the heavens as it plays out. Lyrically, And Nothing Hurt touches on thoughts of passing time and acceptance of one's age never more beautifully than on 'Let's Dance.' During the making of And Nothing Hurt, Jason kept returning to the thought that this would be the last Spiritualized record interviews over the last couple of years made it clear that the frustration of trying to replicate the sounds in his head were proving too much."

2020 repress. "After the lunatic one-two punch of 1970's Total Destruction to Your Mind and 1971's Rat On!, Swamp Dogg aimed for something a bit more earthbound with his third LP, 1972's Cuffed Collared & Tagged, which opens and closes with a pair of contemporary covers and even finds the artist otherwise known as Jerry Williams tackling the Beatles' 'Lady Madonna.' But if this is a somewhat less crazed mixture of R&B, funk, rock & roll, and Swamp Dogg's own trademark world view, it's still clearly his work, especially on the wigged-out Sly Stone parody/tribute 'If It Hadn't Been for Sly' and the stream-of-consciousness wordplay of 'Complication #5.' Swamp Dogg's love of home truths fuel 'You Say You Trust Your Mother,' he's his own kind of love man on 'Captain of Your Ship' and 'Knowing I'm Pleasing Me and You,' he calls out his cheating woman on 'Your Last Dirty Trick,' and he offers a look into the side streets of his own mind on 'My Resume.' This being a product of the era when Swamp Dogg could command a decent recording budget, Cuffed Collared & Tagged is filled with soul-satisfying Southern soul grooves performed by a killer studio band, complete with wailing organ lines and a swaggering horn section that bring Swamp Dogg's tales to funky life. And the covers offer a reminder of what an amazing vocalist Williams was in his prime: his outstanding version of John Prine's 'Sam Stone' cuts to the core of the song's bitter tale of a drug-addicted Vietnam vet, and the eight-minute take of Joe South's 'Don't It Make You Want to Go Home' is emotionally vivid and straight from the heart. This isn't one of Swamp Dogg's crazier albums, but if you want to hear the Mad Genius of Soul deliver some grade-A jams, this is just what you need."

2020 repress. "As an LP, Trying to Live My Live without You falls a wee margin short of masterpiece level, but as it plays the flashes of brilliance tally more than a few. And frankly, I wouldn't want to not have any record that finds Clay pleading 'please somebody take your hand and slap some sense into me.' It's a wonderful little moment of soul candor, easily reflective of what makes his music worthwhile. Hopefully the neglect of his earlier material will soon cease, but until then anyone looking for an introduction into the work of Otis Clay should consider this as their first destination." --The Vinyl District

2020 repress. "A rollicking vocalist and gifted harmonica player, Syl Johnson has forged a career in both blues and soul. The brother of bassist Mac Thompson and guitarist/vocalist Jimmy Johnson, Syl Johnson sang and played with blues artists Magic Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, and Junior Wells in the '50s before recording with Jimmy Reed for Vee-Jay in 1959. He made his solo debut that same year with Federal. Johnson toured with Howlin' Wolf from late 1959 until 1962, when Willie Mitchell signed him to Hi Records. Johnson recorded for both Twilight and Hi in the late '60s and early '70s, clicking with the dance/novelty cut 'Come on Sock It to Me' and crackling message track 'Is It Because I'm Black?' He had his biggest hit with 'Take Me to the River' in 1975, reaching number seven on the R&B charts. Johnson later recorded for Shama and Boardwalk. He reappeared on a collaboration with his brother Jimmy in the summer of 2002, humorously titled Two Johnsons Are Better Than One." --Ron Wynn, AllMusic

"Carroll expressed the Bomb-fear anticipation, the optimistic nihilism and glittering darkness of the 1980s that we who were there felt even if we couldn't communicate it ourselves. When John Lennon was assassinated in front of the Dakota in December 1980, 'People Who Died' was one of the most-requested songs on FM radio, just after Lennon's own 'Imagine.' Steven Spielberg chose 'People Who Died' to play during the opening scene of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. 'People Who Died' tapped a mainline. It was a hit even before it was released, and, as Newsweek's Barbara Graustark noted, it 'propelled [Carroll] from underground status... to national attention as a contender for the title of rock's new poet laureate.' 'People Who Died' wasn't the only thing that sustained Carroll's reputation. The first full-length article about him appeared in 1969, when Jim was 19, and he was featured in Rolling Stone as early as 1973 -- the same year, it was rumored, that he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize at age 22. The 1980 release of Catholic Boy, along with the re-publication of his cult-classic book The Basketball Diaries, shot Jim and his band into the international spotlight. Catholic Boy, named the second-most-popular album of 1980 by BAM, is now considered one of the last great punk albums. Jim appeared with his band on the variety program Fridays, he was interviewed by Tom Snyder, and he was featured on the MTV series The Roots of Rock, hosted by Lou Reed. Cover stories appeared in Newsweek, New York, Creem, Interview, Melody Maker, Stereo Review, Rolling Stone, Variety, and Penthouse. Playboy even printed a cartoon in which the punchline was, 'Ever since the advent of Jim Carroll, 'I'm a Catholic junkie poet' seems hipper than 'What's your sign.'' The Jim Carroll Band's success can be attributed to the powerful combination of pure rock 'n' roll with Carroll's poetic sensibility and ability to write from his own experience, forging a style that articulates the relevance of the individual to the particular, the past to the present. Carroll once said, 'There ain't much time left, you're born out of this insane abyss and you're going to fall back into it, so while you're alive you might as well show your bare ass,' and that's exactly what he does. Musician, Player and Listener described Carroll as 'a transformer, chanting and moaning his litany into something infinitely more palpable than symbols made of sounds.' When reporters began lining up in droves, wondering, 'What's a Pulitzer Prize nominee doing fronting a rock band?' Carroll was already well-known in underground circles for having lived a life of mythic proportions. One writer observed, 'Carroll has his own voice and sound and he earned it the hard way.'" --Cassie Carter
