FLASH 1011CD
|
Flashback present a reissue of The Perth County Conspiracy's self-titled album, originally released in 1970. Despite having completed their debut for Columbia just weeks earlier, in August 1970 Cedric Smith, Richard Keelan, Michael Butler, and other Conspirators recorded another album, exclusively for Canadian radio broadcast. For this recording they'd assembled a fine batch of new material, as well as striking arrangements of songs by Bob Dylan, Donovan, and Smokey Robinson. Warm, atmospheric, and slightly mystical, it's a lost psychedelic folk classic. First ever CD issue; Includes a 16-page booklet with a detailed group history and previously unseen images.

Flashback present a never before released, live recording from Spirit, titled Live At The Ash Grove, 1967 Volume 1. Lead vocalist Jay Ferguson talks about the recording: "The Ash Grove was a legendary venue for folk and early Los Angeles rock, and really the birthplace of Spirit. We brought in a younger, less inhibited crowd, a mixture of hippies and jazz freaks. Spirit, at its inception, was more of an improvisational jazz/blues group than anything else. Our first shows had very few structured songs, lots of free-form going on. We were constantly writing, trying out, and discarding songs. Getting to play in a major LA club, building a following, trying out new ideas, and forging what the group would become. It was a magical time for us." These are the first ever recordings of the band, recorded in the summer of 1967. Produced with the full co-operation of the Randy California estate. Mastered from original tapes. Includes comprehensive liner notes with rare photos. Double LP version comes on 180 gram vinyl; Comes in a gatefold sleeve with two inserts.

Having made two superb psychedelic albums and gigged with The Doors, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground and many others, in June of 1969, The Mandrake Memorial came to London. The plan was to record with famed producer Shel Talmy (The Kinks, The Who, Pentangle), but when that fell through, they persevered alone. Long thought to be lost, 3 Part Inventions anticipates the woozy, dream-like vibe of their 1970 masterpiece Puzzle, combining eerie vocals, trippy guitar and otherworldly electronics to create a unique whole. Transferred directly from the master tape, it's released here for the first time, together with a detailed band history, rare images, two previously unheard outtakes from a 1969 acetate. LP version comes on 180 gram vinyl; Comes in a gatefold sleeve with a 16-page booklet; Includes a 7 inch with a picture sleeve.

Repressed; previously: RSD 2016 release. 180-gram vinyl. Irreverent and anarchic, the Bonzo Dog Band were one of Britain's best-loved 1960s groups. But their eccentric brand of musical humor was not without precedent; they drew much inspiration from so-called "novelty foxtrot" records of the 1930s, which they lovingly learned from 78rpm discs. This compilation presents the original recordings of all such songs that they recorded and performed live. Painstakingly remastered, it comes with detailed notes, rare images, and an introduction from the great "Legs" Larry Smith, core Bonzo Dog Band member. Includes tracks by Leslie Sarony, The BBC Dance Orchestra, The Savoy Havana Band, Jack Hylton & His Orchestra, Percival Mackey & His Band, The Rhythmic Troubadours, Hal Swain & His Band, Albert Whelan, Jack Hylton's Jazz Band, Whispering Jack Smith, Noël Coward, Bebe Daniels & Ben Lyon, Jack Payne & His Dance Orchestra, Jay Wilbur & His Band, Billy Cotton & His Band, The Continental Five, Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers, Ray Starita & His Ambassadors, Jay Whidden & His Band, Roy Leslie, Jack Hodges the Raspberry King, and Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians.

Nick Carter describes this remarkable album as "the culmination of a slightly obsessive idea I had about sound." Built around heavily distorted piano backed with bass, drums, and touches of guitar and sitar, its six tracks are frequently dreamy and hypnotic (reflecting Carter's belief that "repetitive music radiates an unusual ethereal depth"), but can also be unnervingly intense. Recorded in Bristol, England, in 1978-'79, it was pressed in a tiny run aimed at generating major label interest; when that failed to materialize, Carter left music behind. This is its long-overdue first reissue, and comes with background notes and images.

By the summer of 1971, Mighty Baby had shed their psychedelic trappings and taken a more spiritual direction. Newly signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label, they prepared their second and final album, A Jug of Love, in a basement on Harley Road, North London, ahead of sessions in Sound Techniques that July and August. This is the only known recording of them in rehearsal. Taped on Ian Whiteman's Revox with a single microphone, it's entirely instrumental and offers a remarkable insight into the workings of one of Britain's best-loved underground bands at the peak of their powers. It's presented here complete with detailed background notes and rare images.

By the summer of 1971 Mighty Baby had shed their psychedelic trappings and taken a more spiritual, reflective approach. Newly signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label, they prepared the material for their second and final album, A Jug of Love (SBR 5026LP), in a basement on Harley Road, North London, ahead of sessions in Sound Techniques that July and August. This is the only known recording of them in rehearsal. Taped on Ian Whiteman's Revox with a single microphone, it's entirely instrumental ("We weren't great singers, anyway," he wryly states), and offers a remarkable insight into the workings of one of Britain's best-loved underground labels. Heavyweight embossed gatefold sleeve containing LP pressed on 180-gram vinyl, 7" in picture sleeve featuring "Messages" and "Ancient Traveller," facsimile postcard insert, and facsimile 1969 shop poster. UK-based magazine Flashback presents the inaugural release on its vinyl-only label. "I would like to see Trader Horne getting more recognition. They have that feel, that warmth in their music that brings it to life" --Robert Plant, 1970. British folk duo Trader Horne released their only album, the timeless psychedelic folk classic Morning Way, in 1970. Produced with the full involvement of members Judy Dyble and Jackie McAuley, Flashback's reissue comes in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies, each including a numbered certificate signed by Dyble. The album is pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl and is housed in a lavish heavyweight embossed gatefold sleeve. Also included are Trader Horne's 1970 non-album single Here Comes the Rain/Goodbye Mercy Kelly in a picture sleeve, a reproduction of the poster sent out to record shops to promote the album in March 1970, a facsimile of the large postcard that came with the earliest original copies, and a 16-page full-color booklet containing detailed notes and a treasure trove of rare memorabilia and contemporary press.

As a teenager in New York in the late '60s, Velvert Turner realized the dream of countless aspiring guitarists when he befriended and received tuition from Jimi Hendrix. Blending acid rock, funk and soul, his only LP originally appeared in July 1972, and has been described as the greatest Hendrix-inspired album ever released. Both original mixes are presented here (for the first time), and the 2CD set comes complete with biographical liner notes. Housed in a gatefold card wallet.
