Michael Heilrath is one of the most important musicians out of the so-called "Weilheim-Szene," and his musical career is so long, it is hardly possible to get a complete overview. He is the musical head of Couch (Matador, Kitty-Yo), has conducted the Alles Wie Gross orchestra, and has performed electronic music under his Blond moniker. He has also been a contributor for The Notwist, Tied and Tickled Trio, and many others. He is a producer, musician and sound engineer, and now added to the list comes Shoppen Soundtrack, his first release under his real name. This is the soundtrack for the same titled movie from Ralf Westhoff, about marathon singles/dating events in Munich. This is pure electronic music that has the coolness of '80s new wave releases but is incredibly groovy. From the very first listen, the music tiptoes into the auditory canal and settles in. The record is very complex, and there are passages that carve out the ambient territories further and further until they become bonafide dance tracks. Some tracks are suitable for clubs from the very beginning on. This is the most funky release Heilrath has ever made thus far in his expandable and incredible career.

Hausmusik turns 15 years-old and the label needed a compilation to celebrate it. However, this is no normal label compilation: this release brings together the medium of music, comic-art and poetry into a holistic, collaborative expression of everything Hausmusik cares about. Fourteen writers paired up together and wrote seven stories, trading back and forth, exquisite-corpse style. The writers include: Thomas Palzer, Franz Dobler, Katja Huber, Harald, Staun, Didi Neidhart, Julian Weber, Sebastian Dietrich, Rev. Christian Dabeler, Almut Klotz, Roderich Fabian, Nora Scholz, Annemone Fesl and Martin Steinmüller. Every story starts with the same sentence "Man kann nicht immer nur - hören" ("you can't always listen to...") and continues on from there. Every story is unpredictable and completely different in style and mood. The comic artists include: Martin Dessecker, Doris Lasch, Ursula Ponn, Nadine Spengler, Martin Tom Dieck, Atak, CX Huth, Dominik Binegger, Melissa Gates, Helge Reumann, Xavier Robel, Marion Gerth and Silke Heinrich, and they also worked with this first sentence. The musicians worked in pairs, with one starting a track and the other finalizing it. This has nothing to do with remixing or working together in a studio, as the first act gives something raw and unfinished to another, with the second act taking over the song and all responsibility for it. So the files were sent all over the globe and at the end of the day, the results culminated in glorious art-collaboration. In each of the tracks you can find the trademark sounds of each artist, augmented in the second half by surprises and embellishments. Sixteen exclusive tracks from artists such as: Deaf Center, Carlo Fashion, Calexico, Notwist, Broken Radio, A Million Mercies, Sodastream, Ms John Soda, Console, Loopspool, Couch, Squares On Both Sides, Iso 68, Fonoda, Fred Is Dead, Jersey, Ted Milton and Village of Savoonga.

Reservations is Sodastream's fourth studio album. Over the course of ten years with countless months spent in the backs of vans throughout Europe and North America, the Australian duo of Karl Smith and Pete Cohen have been progressively expanding the musical world of Sodastream from scratchy lo-fi and barely-whispered mournful melancholy through to lush, expansive pop with horn sections and singalongs. The plodding bass and tentative viola of "Warm July" drop you into Reservations in the middle of a broken relationship with a hint that Sodastream have a different story to tell this time around. By the second track, with its barely-strummed guitar and mournful vocal, the indications are very clear that Reservations summons darker places. Where 2003's A Minor Revival was filled with the joyous wonder of new stories, all horns and soaring choruses, this is the sound of a Melbourne winter, full of quick changes and cold snaps. There are also some wickedly jaunty pop tracks here of the trademark Sodastream style, all shuffling drums and bubbling basslines, and there's slow building harmony-driven melancholy -- but even these songs echo with an overall sense of sadness. Sodastream effortlessly jump from acoustic introspection and instrumentals to raucous shanties without any hint of affectation. Even with the addition of horns, harmonicas, and the drums of Marty Brown, the core of their sound remains the same as it is live -- Smith's acoustic guitar, Pete's driving double bass, and some of the best, most beautiful songwriting to come out of Australia in years.
