By 1960, the sound of black popular music had turned away from a driving, largely up-tempo rhythm and blues to-wards a more emotionally poignant style described at the time as secularized gospel. The term "soul" popped up here and there, but only became common parlance after Ray Charles's "I Believe To My Soul" was released at the end of 1959. This compilation, part of the History of Soul series, brings together the finest tunes before soul went main-stream, accompanied by a 28-page booklet exploring the historical background from the years 1959 and 1960. Featuring Isley Brothers, The Soul Seekers, Barrett Strong, The Sensational Wonders, The Meditation Singers, The Falcons, Sugar Pie DeSanto, The Sunset Travelers, Big Jay McNeely, The Highway QC's. The definitive "5" Royales brings together all known recordings of the "5" Royales and their songwriter Lowman Pauling. This set presents all their Apollo recordings together with "5" Royales curios and outtakes. When they joined King in the spring of 1954 they were coming off a run of hits for Apollo that had made them the most successful R&B group in the US. Arguably the greatest of all the R&B groups, the "5" Royales were also the very first to marry blues rhythms and instrumental stylings with the vocal fire of gospel. This daring and controversial innovation merging secular and sacred musical influences into a coherent whole, lays down the future guidelines of soul music. Compiled with the invaluable assistance of J. Taylor Doggett and Monika Hinrichs, these CDs contain some of the very best early soul and R&B ever recorded and the Royales' music still has the power and the passion to move us all. Includes 24-page booklet with notes by John Ridley.

African American popular music was mostly known as Rhythm and Blues in 1962, the beginning of the era covered in this collection. But by the end of the period, 1965, the music was universally called Soul. The Chicago music industry exploded with the growth of soul music in this period, producing thousands of records and dozens and dozens of new labels. The two biggest black music labels Vee-Jay and Chess led in the creation of the Chicago soul brand with names familiar and not so familiar: the former with Etta James and Tony Adams and the latter with Gene Chandler and Moss Tolbert. And yet it's the smaller labels that make up the bulk of the Chicago story: Conlo with Jamo Thomas, Blue Rock with Otis Leaville, Ja-Wes with Sandra Stephens, and it's here that History Of Soul explores some of the finest sounds of the era in this collection. Featuring: Jamo Thomas, Tim, Billy Butler & 4 Enchanters, The Drew-vells, Chuck & Daylighters, Doris Smith, Otis Leaville, Jackie Beavers, Geraldine Taylor, Ricky Allen, The Amazers, Jerry Butler, Moss Tolbert, Sandra Stephens, The Radiants, The Ringleaders, The Vontastics, Huey & Baby Sitters, The Accents, Harvey & 7 Sounds, Roberta, Gene Chandler, Wales Wallace, Jeanette Nellis, The Vibrations, The Impressions, Henry Ford, Natalie, Gifts, Gerald Sims, Jackey Beaver, Bobby Starr, Chuck Bernard, Tony Adams, Al Perkins, The Sheppards, Sam Chatmon & Sparks, Ruby Stackhouse, Etta James, Jesse Fortune, Dee Clark, The Vondells, Wade Flemons, Edward St Ann, Sugar Pie DeSanto, The Kavetts, The Versalettes, and Donnie Elbert.

Following the first LP of Tom Jones's finest soulful performances on the radio, Soul Man, History of Soul presents a second album of soul songs that should have released but never did. The focus this time is on his TV performances, the bulk of which come from 1969 and reflect his personal preference for covering Stax, Atlantic, and Motown material. So put aside your preconceptions if you have any and listen to his collaborations with Aretha, Smokey, Janis, Cher, Dusty and don't forget that Wicked Wicked Pickett. With a tight, funky band led by Herbie Flowers, this is big band soul at its very best.

Live set from Aretha Franklin never before heard on a commercial release. And it is with pride that History of Soul can say that the recordings, made in a TV studio in Cologne during her first European tour in 1968, are smack in the middle of soul's Golden Age. The musical quality -- the great artist at her peak -- is so high that this issue can only enhance her reputation. This is prime Aretha Franklin -- and soul music doesn't get much better than this.
